SBS Television’s INSIGHT program wants to talk about prescription drug abuse in Australia.

We'd like to hear personal stories from people who may have abused prescription drugs, or from people who have had family/friends who have been affected. We'd like to know about the impact prescription drug addiction has had on you, your friends and family.

Or do you work with people who have been affected by prescription drug misuse? What is the solution to this problem?

If you're able to put INSIGHT in touch with people who fit the above criteria please email Associate Producer Kate Mayhew ([email protected]) with your details.

Thanks.

How about people who abused prescription drugs in a recreational way, enjoyed them, never had any problems, and are now happy and successful people? Interested in those?

Hi De quincy, if you haven't already you may wish to contact the moderators of the drug studies forum, Tronica & nuke, to see wether it might be worth placing a request for details over there too?

Do you have a timeframe within which you're gathering information?

Edit: satricion makes a good point, I'm sure there is a huge number of people out there abusing prescription medication recreationally without it having a profound negative impact on their lives or the lives of their family/friends. A lot of people can exercise moderation, self control and safe drug-use practices after all :)

Sorry Satricion, I'm only the messenger, the request from SBS was posted to me. If you contact Kate Mayhew ([email protected]) she will clarify what it is that they are interested in.

Personally I think they need to hear the good news stories of people who use/used drugs and have become successful. All too often the media perceptions of drug use are at the sharp end of the spectrum and not based on reality. The quiet majority of functional drug users don't seem to make the news, funny about that.

Fair enough. I wouldn't go on the show anyway since I don't need my parents and colleagues knowing about all that. But I used to use oxy and benzos and I'm doing fine. I'd still use them if I could get a hold of them too.

Good to see you around again De_quincy, someone with your experience and knowledge is great on this site.

Sry I don't have any stories to input, but I can speak to a few mates who might be able to help.

I have been addicted to anything u can think (Molly, ice/amphetamine sulphate/acid, shrooms and the list could go on and i have to say not being big headed but i have been very successful in the past few years. My parent made the decision to move back here for a better life and to move away from all the drugs and bad things in Eastern Europe (was born in OZ tho).

I only use prescription things including oxys, hydromorpones, morphine, alprazolams and DXM which is OTC that i use for potentiation. Id have to say before i used it i have been very creative.

I found my dream job (not so much for dream wage?) but i luv what i am doing. Im a salesman and Im studying Personal Training at the moment. I am planning to open up my own supplement store soon and also working on a new project where i will be designing and manufacturing supplements and would like to brand them as well and get it approved by the TGA and within the appropriate guidelines. I will be also studying and taking part of a chemistry course shortly.

Am working on this as well so currently i have my hands full. Drugs will still be a part of my life but u learn not to let it interfere with ur goals and dreams. Keep it separate from it and u will be a successful person, i am nowhere near a a fully successful person but i am getting once step closer to being there each time.

Any one here who thinks that drugs have a negative impact on ur life regarding what i have just mentioned needs to think again. Dream>create>succeed.

Thats my 2 cents anyway.

Insight are about as it good as it gets for balanced discussion on drug topics, many previous BL'ers have appeared on the show previously to discuss pill testing.

=Dpostive impact makes work easier and study, i think clearer and focus better. And can relax! Been on bens since 2004 –was 18, and they the best thing for my panic attacks, anxiety and sleep issues. Dependent, not addicted! and don’t abuse or drink on them, but i do eat a lot of them.

Swap between them all to try to help with tolerance.

only bad thing is with low blood pressure and they lower it, has put me in hospital a few times- that was from overdoing other cns prescription drugs tho.

anonmyously yes.

Don’t have a friend who isn’t prescribed a benzo. Manly 1 or 2- anxiety and a sleeper. They great ppl.

There is defitely cross tolerance but can take 8 5mg vals`during the day an extra mog and murelax at night and only go through 5 of my 3 prescribed 2mg xanax/day for a whole week when I go to work, then mix it up with vans when mogs arent getting me to sleep. Just rotate sorta thing...

^ Ah I see... so by using the longer half-life diazepam you can cut back on the shorter ones for a few days. That makes sense, though the tolerance would still be there.

Have you ever had to go through benzo WD?

I don't want to get this anymore off-topic, but maybe you should post in the benzos thread?

Anyway if you don't want to quit and your doctor isn't about to cut you off, no problems for now. :)

Someone should really create a thread about Low Blood Pressure vs High Blood Pressure. Which is worst?

Personally, I'd be more worried about high blood pressure.

If blood pressure drops too low, you generally faint, as long as you're not driving or anything and don't hit your head, I think you'd recover with maybe a trip to the hospital.

High BP on the other hand, often goes unnoticed but can drastically increase your risk of a stroke or heart attack.

I'm not a doctor or anything so don't take my word for it, but that's the impression I get from reading up on the subject.

Low blood pressure is more than that can affect your breathing and respiratory function. If you asleep thats not good. Also get a jerky leg in my sleep from not getting enough oxygen think its your bodies way of waking you up, and yeah fainting isn't great and even when on amphetamines my blood pressure reaches the normal mark, but I have tostay extra hydrated
