ok, my best friend was raped this past month and there is a slight possiablity that she could be pregnant. she hasn't missed her period yet so we still don't know. But she kinda forgot about it and took a half of a pill. If she does in fact turn out to be pregnant, what are the damages that should have effected on her baby. We're thinking maybe 1 1/2 along. Any info or thoughts would be helpful. Please don't give me heat about it. after she did it she paniked and she relizes that if she is pregnant she won't ever roll again.

Roll safe!

(sorry for misspellings. I'm rolling balls right now.)

Too early to cause any damage if she's pregnant. I'm not saying it's safe, but if she is pregnant she won't have a baby born with three eyes or anything. I ended up pregnant pretty young and was doing drugs and drinking before I found out I was pregnant. I asked my doc about it and he said usually anything you do (including drugs, smoking, drinking, or even riding a crazy roller coaster) before you find out your pregnant is usually too soon to do any damage. You just have to quit the bad habits as soon as you find out.

There is a slight possibility of some sort of defect -- a link has been found in rats between MDMA exposure to fetuses and birth defects, though if you're not going overboard I doubt its a problem.

There's been lots of threads on this before:
go to the search engine and type in:
MDMA pregnant. You should find heaps of info.

don't want to scare you or your friend but i don't think you can find to much relief from online forums...go see a doctor or two

just becasue she hasn't missed a period doesn't mean she's not pregnant my sister my mom both had their periods until their 3rd trimester....so u never know it is possible....but the first trimester is the most cautious to a baby's health becasue that's when u can't have the caffeine and all the good stuff so tell ur friend to becareful and just go see a doctor....believe me because i was a coach to my sister, ex best friend, coworker...I learn alot

I doubt there are too many doctors who know very much about the damages MDMA can have on a fetus. It's nothing that has been extensively researched with humans.

this might be a little out of place for me, but why is she keeping a child to a father she (i'm assuming) doesn't know? Has she considered the possibility of an abortion?

I wouldn't bring a child into this world unless I was ready for it. (I know I'm a guy, but thats my viewpoint)

She does know him. We know his name and where he lives and where he works. She considered an abortion for about 30 mins and then decided against it. She said she just wouldn't be able to live with herself after that. I don't blame her I wouldn't be able to get an abortion either.

No kidding. (btw, this would be far from being a fetus at this point.)

Reproductive Toxicologists are a rare bird, and many of them are research scientists, not MDs.

I don't know of many studies involving the first trimester. One such study was done at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago last year. Here is a report of the study:
http://www.nih.gov/news/pr/aug2003/nida-29.htm

Before you read the study:
The results of the study are somewhat concerning. But I'd like to point out several things: that rat metabolism is much faster than is a human's. And the exposure schedule in the study (rather unrealistic) is twice per day for 6 days total (and probably at abnormally high dosages of MDMA). That's 6 days out of a 21 day gestation cycle for rats.

Considering the length of gestation for rats compared to humans, this would be like taking a large dose of MDMA, twice per day, for a full trimester. You're friend ONLY took 1/2 pill, and ONLY once.

I would say that she doesn't have anything to worry about. That is such a low dosage, and you are only talking about one incident of exposure. In all honesty, I would think that her having a few alcoholic drinks in that period would be more threatening to her baby, than the MDMA exposure that she has had.

My advise would be to not worry about it. Even the specific cells which MDMA has an affinity for do not exist in the embryo at this stage of development. But if she still feels concerned, then recommend that she discuss this with her OB/GYN. He will be able to recommend if she needs to see a specialist or not.

Good luck, and tell her not to worry. Over 30 million MDMA dosages are taken worldwide in any given weekend. Imagine how many of those dosages are going into pregnant women who are not aware of it yet. This is probably far more common than you'd think. And healthy kids are still being born. ;)

^^ It's worth noting that MAO-B isn't present in unborn children for a long part of the pregnancy. I think that speaks volumes :)

That's an extremely excellent point VelocideX.

I think she needs to be more concerned about her diet than this one time exposure. :)

And how do you think the child's going to feel when s/he finds out s/he was the product of rape? :( This kid is going to have serious issues. I'm not here to preach, but you really should encourage her to seek counselling whether she turns out to be pregnant or not. Rape is a very serious thing and can have severe ramifications down the track*

*without getting too personal, let's just say I speak from experience here :)

Again i might be out of line, but anyone who refuses to accept even a single counselling session after being raped clearly has something they don't want to talk about, or something that is bothering them

the other problem is that she''s really tight for money right now. her hours have been cut at work because of summer school. she will seek some counciling, just not right now, prolly in a week or two. Right now she just have to figure out if she is pregnant or not.

Summer school? Dare I ask how old your friend is? Hasn't your friend taken a pregnancy test after all this time?

Also, if she was raped and you know where this guy works and lives why doesn't she have him arrested?!?

I think it's pretty obvious that your friend isn't ready to bring a child into this world and it's not her fault that she's pregnant since she was raped. She needs counciling and she needs to have that guy arrested.

I seriously hope this isn't a situation where she actually likes this guy and is, deep down, hoping she's pregnant in order to keep him in her life. I've seen it happen and everybody loses.

May I be so bold, and suggest adoption? I'm not an advocate of abortion personally, but if she refuses to do this, it is possible she could find a good family to adopt it. I know of a few families, that are unable to have children naturally for one reason, or another, and they'd love to adopt a kid. The problem is the serious lack of people who can't really support the child not giving them up, so they can have a better life.

Please don't take this as judgement, I'm a supporter of adoption, over abortion.

Sexual assault counselling should be free almost anywhere in the world. Money's not an excuse. It sounds like there's something fishy going on here :(

^^ I agree. I can't speak for where you live, but I know that there are "crisis" phone numbers in america you can call to talk to a counsellor if you have been raped.

I also agree that it should be reported to the polic. Rape is a terrible, terrible thing and anyone who rapes someone should be sent to gaol.
