Okay, so I have been on pregablin recently (not as prescribed) and have for a while. I am wondering what is the best way moving forward without getting tolerence, for example how long should I take breaks from it.

bit more info needed, how much are you taking right now and how frequently. What other drugs are in the mix?

daily high use is very different from occasional light use. Also everyone's biochem is different, and there are other drugs which are cross tolerant.

from personal experience I was using pregab once a week at 300mg for about a year before I began to get tolerance building, I took a 1.5 month break and it started to reset, however I should have taken a longer break as it's already building after a very short time starting back up again YMMV.

once I get my tolerance reset I'm going to aim to use it no more than once a month, really would like to keep the magic - dunno if that's workable though!

My normal prescribed amount is 300 mg per day, which does absolutely nothing for me and hasn't done in around two years. But recreationally it's a different thing; I take on average 1200 every couple of days. Then I take modafinil, as in when I need it to study and get stuff done, and that's 200 mg. That's all I take apart from the nootropics and OTC.

1200 every few days is a lot, there's a max amount your body can absorb which IIRC is about 900mg - though I'm not sure if that changes as your tolerance increases, beyond that you just piss it out.

depending on what you're prescribed it for you might want to consider alternatives for your medical reasons, and stay off the pregab, but given you've been on it daily with high doses every few days for so long you might need to taper - afraid I can't give any advice on that though, hopefully others will chip in who know more than me.

If you share what you've been prescribed it for i'm sure people will be able to suggest alternatives, very different if you have it for nerve pain versus off label GAD

I have a script for Lyrica and have a ton of Gabapentin left over and I prefer Lyrica although I find it more unpredictable than Gaba.

You could say that I use them recreationally after having tried taking them as prescribed for months. Both meds do not seem to help the actual pain, but they make me feel goofy for a good part of the day which distracts me. The problems with the 2 meds, at least for me are:

I can stop using both for over a month, way long enough to reset my tolerance. The first time or maybe even 2 times back are very enjoyable but after that, even when using 2x a week max ever ever it's like I gotta take another month off. The stuff is complete bullshit and a waste of time and energy IMO due to the fact that it seriously stops working if used more than 3x days in a row. I don't really know anything about pharmacology, but you would think that they could make a med that doesn't create a complete tolerance in a few uses.

I am allowed 150mg a day. That is what I used when I was first on them taking that dose daily. When I started using them 1-2x a week, I usually take 300 mg, but I have never gone over that.

I am pretty positive that I am underdosing, but I am scared of taking too much.

Like I wrote earlier, Lyrica for me seems almost hit or miss. I always stay in the 225-300mg range and I always stick to the same tight dose schedule as I always have. Thing is, I can take 225mg, wait as many days as I usually do, then take 300mg, and the 225mg hits harder?!

I find Lyrica fairly enjoyable, problem is that I find that it does not work consistently for me.
