Prefrosh Preview: Illegal drugs at Georgetown
Author Posted by -edit- on May 30, 2014

Editor’s note: This post is intended to provide a realistic and helpful picture of the undergraduate, illegal drug culture at Georgetown. The information in this post is generally common knowledge and does not come from Vox‘s personal experience. Vox does not endorse breaking any laws or doing any drugs.

It’s the third day of NSO, and you’re feeling a bit lost—pep rallies aren’t really your thing, and talking about your tentative plans for an Anthro major with hundreds of random people has been grating, to say the least. This is college?

Buzz! It’s a text from the vaguely chill-looking guy from Iowa you met at last night’s awkward BBQ. “Let’s hang,” it reads. “Some homies are coming over to my room in 20 min. Harbin 407. You down?”

“Sure,” you type. Why not?

30 minutes later, you’re in a dark dorm room, surrounded by chuckling freshmen, and a red-eyed girl wearing what looks like a blanket hands you an ice-blue bong, its stem cloudy with smoke.

“You need to hit this,” she says. “Premium sativa my boy had shipped in from Oregon. Medicinal. I’ll light you, blazer.”

If you do something resembling this at Georgetown, consider yourself McGruff the Crime Dog, because you’ve found out virtually all there is to know about Georgetown’s “underground drug culture.” Aside from a little more than a few pot smokers, Georgetown has a minuscule amount of illegal drug use.

Here’s the truth—Georgetown isn’t a wacked-out liberal arts college nestled within the Vermont pines, nor is it NYU, where (Vox hears) cocaine flows freely into the bloodstream of students. Drugs (other than alcohol, ’cause technically that’s a drug) just don’t dominate the landscape here. A solid majority of students stick to the intoxicants Uncle Sam endorses: cold beer, cheap vodka, and big cups of coffee. Maybe it has to do with the fact that a lot of Georgetown students want to work for the government and might need to pee into a cup. Whatever the reason, if you ask a lot of people on campus about it, they’ll say, “What drug scene?”

But it is at Georgetown, even though most students never encounter anything other than joint or bong-passing at a small gathering or a finals-week Adderall binge.

Weed runs about $20 per gram and between $45 and $60 per eighth, but getting close to a dealer means he’ll probably start throwing 0.2 extra or a half-price bag once in a while. Pot in Georgetown is pretty high-quality because almost all dealers have connections on the West Coast for shipments. Awful brown brick weed is a rarity.

Many people smoke in their rooms as freshman, but that can be risky. Based on GUPD’s daily crime log, one or two groups of students get busted with weed every month, and it’s almost always due to an officer investigating a “suspicious odor.” That means those students either smoked in a dorm room or in a well-trafficked outdoor area, like Village A on a weekend night. When people do smoke in dorms, they usually block the cracks around their doors and try to ventilate the smoke out. All it takes is a strict RA or a nosy neighbor to report that “suspicious odor.”

Most groups of students who do smoke do it in apartments or in secluded, off-campus locations.

Those who do get caught are not in that bad of a position. The administration isn’t overly strict (you don’t get kicked out for smoking a joint one time), but GUPD will cause problems for those who aren’t careful. It’s easy enough to take a nice walk to a safe spot five minutes away, like the woods behind the observatory.

For other drugs, it’s basically up to who you know. Cocaine runs a long second to weed as Georgetown’s favored illegal drug, and some people do ecstasy or MDMA before concerts. The best people to ask for connections to hard stuff are, of course, weed dealers, and every New South floor has at least one.

Unfortunately, the academic pressures of Georgetown can be overwhelming, and some students use study drugs as a result. Adderall and other study drugs are never too difficult to come by, and a 10mg Adderall pill usually runs between $3 and $5.

Georgetown’s office of Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) can help any student who is struggling with substance abuse on a confidential basis. Georgetown students usually play it safe and almost none take anything “harder” than marijuana, but nothing is off-limits as far as access goes. Vox hopes every student is safe and does what they need to do to stay that way.

This certainly has some tongue in cheek about it.. I bet Gtown rages and like the good chap says just ask the dealers and you can get anything like almost everywhere is on the planet.

I've found that the university I attended with about 17000 students doesn't have a significant 'drug scene' and it basically came down to who you knew, which contrasted heavily with the college I attended of only 2000 students where there was a spectrum of drugs constantly available. Location may have to do with it, the college was in a smaller town and was specifically an environmental school (perhaps the most significant factor), while the university is in a larger city and hosted to a variety of disciplines.

At the large university I attended the #1 drug was alcohol or maybe caffeine <eg> but a lot of people smoked pot as well. Some people also were into cocaine (snifing/IV powder and crack/freebase too), heroin, pharm opiates, pharm amphetamines, psychedelic mushrooms, LSD if it was around, research chemicals that were completely legal at the time, MDMA, meth, salvia, 2C-B, and I did meet some people who were into taking either/both 5-MeO, and n,n,-DMT or who had experimented with it.

But this is a university where there were almost 50,000 students but that includes undergrad and grad students.

I attended a smaller college for two years before that and that had 3,500 students and it there was mainly alcohol and pot smoking there; but some did trip on LSD, Ketamine, take opiates, use coke or pharm amphetamines, and if you wanted any drug it was easy to go into nearby a major east coast city and get it.

In college I did trip some on low doses of LSD and mushrooms since I'd taken them in highschool; and I did smoke pot on the weekends or a few times before classes; but aside from when I became an alcoholic I did not use that much or that often because I was way too busy with classes, classwork, and work. Fortunately I realized I am an alcoholic and got sober.
