Extremely Potent Form Of Heroin Makes Way Through County
Substance Abuse Experts, Authorities Concerned Over Black Tar Heroin

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego substance abuse experts say a disturbing trend in the drug trade may soon claim many lives in the county.

While experts said local teens used to be scared of heroin, that fear has faded while the potency of the drug has jumped.

"I tried it because it was around," said John.


At age 19, John became addicted to heroin. Soon after, he began dealing the drug.

"It's definitely getting stronger," he told 10News.

The heroin he sold was a very high 50 percent pure. He said he recently saw one user overdose.

"[He] thought he could handle it. He tried it, and next thing you know he's on the ground, flopping like a fish," said John.

The user survived the incident, and so did Will Jones.

" missed a vein and shot the dope in there," Jones said.

The scars are many for Jones, an addict-turned-treatment program manager at the McAlister Institute, a local center that helps those whose lives have been affected by drug use.

Jones said black tar heroin from Mexico is more potent than ever and is as much as 80 to 90 percent pure.

"Before you even get the needle out of your arms, person overdoses and ends up dead," said Jones.

Nationwide, heroin deaths are at record numbers.

In San Diego County, there were 52 deaths from heroin overdoses in 2009 -- up 27 percent in two years.

Experts said improvement in production methods have ramped up potency and lowered prices.

"It's a deadly combination. It's a death wish," said Jones.

It is a combination that is attracting teens, according to Jones.

In his program, Jones estimated the number of teen clients addicted to heroin has increased by 50 percent in the last 5 years.

After heroin destroyed much of his life, John got help.

However, many fear with heroin more deadly than ever, others will never get the chance to get help.

"A lot of families are going to grieve," said Jones.

Law enforcement is aware of the growing issue, but experts said the tide will be tough to stop.

Heroin seizures jumped 200 percent at the U.S.-Mexico border in 2009, and the pace is similar in 2010.

Is this good news or bad news?
 
The more pure the better, so long as there is consistency..

I'm having a little trouble buying that tar has become anywhere near as potent as powder, 80-90% sounds really high


Is their only source for that number really from a user who ODd and not a lab??
 
Yeah, I'd like to check this writers sources. As a news writer myself I question the integrity of this article as a whole. Where are quotes from medical professionals, where are the quotes from law enforcement? If you ask me, it's a journalists responsibility to make stories(esp. ones of this nature that voice public health concerns) as factually complete as to educate the reader base on all the angles of the issue. That quote saying 80-90% is from the dealer. That being said, how many times have you heard a dealer/your buddy say some ignorrant shit like, "this yay-o is totally pure" or "these tabs are mescaline based"
 
whats sad is that the poor girl prolly will never get another chance to cover such an A-list event. then again, who knows, maybe the bell's palsy could be the red carpet look for 2011
 
soo we are suppossed to just take this guys word on potency

shit, if i wanted to i could tell yall the tar i was getting was ~80-90%, but we all know it wasnt

now i doo agree that tar can be alot more potent then some tend to think, but 80-90% just sounds out there, especially the way the artical is writtin it just sounds like the guy came up with those percentages on his own
 
hmmmmm, i wish i could find some of that 90% shit. The last couple gs ive gotten havent been that good.
 
This comes from channel news 10 in San Diego, the ABC affiliate. You can look up there website, I'm too lazy to get the link. I really doubt it that tar can even get that strong here, I just thought it was a funny story. He probably pulled the story out of his ass, got to remember this channel is owned by Disney, but its a that the "Journalist" wrote, I have nothing to do with it but paste and copy. If it was really that high, I would think there would be more ODs last year than 50 something, and we are talking a major metropolis area. So please do not take this "journalist's" story too seriously, I'm getting some of the better stuff that I have found in SD and there is no way it can be that pure. I have never once ODed off of H. I used to IV all the time, and ti would take a lot to even get a rush, and like I said before, I usually get the better stuff than the not so better stuff. I wish there was a bigger powder supply, it is near impossible to get powder here, but it's got to be somewhere. I do believe are shit is a lot better than most places, since we live on border we get 1st dibs most of the time so it isn't really stepped on that much in the states yet, say like SLC in Utah or somewhere else that it has to travel very far.

On a side note, if you watch any world news or news about TJ, it is getting pretty crazy ever since they took down the local Cartel. Things were more stable when they were in charge and shit ran a lot more smoothly on both side of the border. If you ever seen Traffic, that is kind of true what happened here awhile back. Where the Federal Soldiers were supposed to get the drug smugglers and they turned out to be in the pockets of the Sinaloa cartel. It's funny but not at that same time, because a lot of people are dying, and that is fucked up anyway you look at it, plus bad for business.

I'm gonna use some Journalism skills and say that 80-90% of IDU's can't find a spoon that deep.

How do people determine purity? I'm sure Black Tar can get pretty pure. I've had some stuff that has been REALLY good, I wouldn't know where to begin when it comes to even making a realistic estimate. I just know there's been stuff to where if I shoot my usual dose I'll be violently nodding instead of smoothly sailing.
 
"Freedom of the Press" also means that news outlets are free to think for themselves. I wish people had a "Freedom to Slap the Shit Out of the Press for Being Idiots". Maybe someone can sneak that into the constitution.
 
I notice here in San Diego that the North County stuff is weaker and more expensive (twice the amount than in the South). I always thought that was hilarious. I used to drive 30 minutes one way just to get a present for my wife and I.
 
When is the media going to wake up and realize the reason there is such an increase in Diacetylmorphine use because of the whole OxyContin "epidemic"
 
There's no way that it's 80-90%. MAYBE, just maybe it could be 80% tops when it comes straight off the manufacturing process, but at the street level, I would have to think 50-60% would be the absolute max you'd find.
