Potent ecstasy sparks concerns for young Australians

Increasing levels of MDMA in ecstasy tablets could prove fatal for young Australians, drug researchers warn.

The Drug and Alcohol Research Training Australia (DARTA) says there has been a dramatic increase in the circulation of tablets containing high-levels of MDMA in recent months.

Ecstasy is the street name for a range of drugs, including or similar in chemical structure to MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine).

"The issue that we're seeing, in Europe particularly at the moment, is an increase in the prevalence of MDMA," said Paul Dillon, the founder and director of DARTA.

"It's very strange. We haven't seen this for some time. It may have already happened here."

In Australia, ecstasy has typically contained only a small amount of MDMA, or none at all, leading many drug users in Australia to take multiple "tabs".

"In Australia over the last few years ecstasy pills have become very poor quality, very weak," Mr Dillon said.

"Young people are now double-dropping or triple-dropping... which means you take two at a time or three at a time.

"They believe they are going to be of such poor quality, you might as well take a lot if you want a hit."

People taking the pills here who do not account for an increased MDMA content may suffer devastating consequences, Mr Dillon says.

"If that is happening here and we have - particularly a young person who hasn't got a great deal of tolerance - who takes two or three at a time, there is a chance of death. MDMA toxicity is possible," Mr Dillon said.

"Unfortunately people think that if I've got an ecstasy pill and it's got MDMA in it, then it's good quality, it won't hurt me. That's just simply not true.

"It can kill and it has done in this country a number of times."

At a quick look on the first 5 pages (or more) of the Aus section of pill reports the pills still look mostly weak and or adulterated. I think I saw 1 MDxx 'high'.

Then check the EU sect and there is currently 7 MDxx high's on the first page.

If the pills were that high level they wouldn't have to take so many.
Things like pill reports and ecstacy data are potentially life saving sites and should be frequented by and ecstacy (mdma) user.
Knowledge is power.
Also invest in test kits.

What they don't mention is that the levels are rising back to what they were in the 90's/early 2000's. The danger comes from mis-/lack of information as usual.

Ecstasy is notoriously difficult to OD on alone. Articles like this are so pathetic with their doomsday prophesies. Propaganda anal fuck puppets working for the alcohol/tobacco/pharmaceutical/law enforcement industries are concerned because their efforts have amounted to shit.

This article is on the abc (abc aust website), and I just heard them talking about it on abc (aus) radio today as well, with some of the people mentioned in the online article. They are hammering at this 'high potency MDMA from Europe might kill Aussies thing' a fair bit.

You don't use poledriver as a your playsatation ID by any chance?

If I say negative again, are you going to ask the same question again? If so I'll just say yeah to stop us all going through more.

I expected more from the ABC. They have let me down this time, truly. :(

Poledriver can you make your own weekly drug newspaper in Aus? So I can look educated and hip when I'm being seedy at cafés. One with fact not fiction? Promise I'll subscribe. <3

Inb4 calls of "ong this is wot BL is for" it would be to stop journalists saying stupid shit and misinforming the public on a weekly basis in their own articles, this crew would post relevant national shit HR & DITM related, it could be cool but I suppose its just a mix of errytang on bluelight but presented in a news format.

Obviously would take ages to get going but it would be great if it got somewhere.

Pill quality definitely seems to be picking up overall. Last time I went out back in October the venue was actually packed with gurney munty types :) Hardly an angry crackhead in sight, it was like stepping into a time machine. I indulged myself and the pills were very clean, if not excessively potent. Similar experience a few months before that in July, although these ones were slightly stronger. Both times I bought in the club on the night.

Of course what more MDMA really means is less violence, less people getting sick from dirty batches, less violence, less alcohol consumption and less people smoking (and developing a taste for) meth.

mdma is way harder to OD on than cocaine (easy) or amphetamine (easy)

i've seen people take huge doses and they mong out and then 6 hours later come out of the haze

its PMA they should be worried about- maybe it is what they are worried about but they have their facts wrong

how many times PMA been called strong ecstacy?

By the news? All the time, "TEEN DIES FROM OVERDOSE OF ECSTASY", but the coroner's report would come back a few days later and a lot of the time the journalists don't bother to say "oh the other day we said this, well actually it was this, sorry, we'll get our shit together next time and not broadcast drivel with misleading headlines."
