March 22, 2006 -- The so-called "Pot Princess" got a fairy-tale ending in Manhattan Supreme Court yesterday, where she was sentenced to five years' probation for dealing drugs on and around the NYU campus.

Julia Diaco, 20, was officially slapped on the wrist after her lawyer told Justice Charles Solomon that, as per the deal she'd worked out with prosecutors, she'd successfully completed her drug rehab and education program.

Asked if she wanted to say anything before her sentencing, Diaco - dressed in a dark, pinstriped skirt suit with knee-high stiletto-heeled boots - whispered, "No."

Her lawyer, Paul Schechtman, told the judge his client had taken "a long journey and a successful one."

Diaco - who had cracked wise to reporters after her arrest in 2004 - declined comment as she left court. Schechtman said, "She's a very different person than she was 18 months ago, and she has a bright future ahead of her."

Diaco was facing up to 25 years in prison had she been convicted of the top charges against her at trial.

Prosecutors apparently had a strong case against her - including videotape of her selling marijuana, magic mushrooms, LSD and cocaine to undercover officers.

While she was selling small amounts, she was also dealing on a regular basis, using her NYU dorm as her "base of operations," prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said she dealt to undercover officers eight times, with her biggest deal $650 worth of cocaine, and would ply her wares on and around the NYU campus, including Washington Square Park.

When she was arrested, she was carrying several ounces of marijuana and a scale.

The case was surprising because the petite Diaco didn't need the money - she's the daughter of a millionaire builder and grew up in a castle-like mansion in tony Rumson, N.J.

Diaco pleaded guilty to drug possession and sale charges in 2004, but was allowed to withdraw that plea and plead guilty to lesser versions of those charges yesterday after successfully completing her drug rehab program and passing her drug tests.

She now attends a community college in New Jersey.

News of the deal frustrated Anthony Papa, 51, who, like Diaco, was once a first-time, non-violent offender. Instead of probation, he was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for delivering four ounces of cocaine for a police informant to an undercover cop for a $500 fee.

The owner of a struggling auto repair business in The Bronx, Papa was desperate for cash and couldn't afford a pricey lawyer.

"I get angry with a case like this because the laws are not applied equally. Because she had money and the right lawyers, she didn't go to jail. Others should have that same opportunity," he said. "All people should be treated like this woman - with compassion."

Glad she got off lightly... 25 years is ridiculous.. you'd have to import tonnes to get anywhere near that in the UK and even then you'd only serve half of it before getting parole.

And 15-life for that other guy is fucked up too :(

HELLO, she did BIG deals for coke and other schedule one stuff with cops. she should be in jail.

That's rediculous though, she sold a shit load of what the government considers 'hard drugs' and yet she got away basically scott free... (oo probation! oh no!).

God, what a stupid fucking cunt. Dumb-ass stupid white rich girl who shouldn't be dealing in the first place; wish she got a fucking sentence.

Dealing from her dorm? What a dumb bitch. NYU is in the fucking city; she should have at least done what the rest of NYU dealers do and sold away from the campus. It's not like it's hard to get anywhere; it's in Manhattan.

If you're rich, you can get a very good lawyer and thus a lighter sentence. Life sucks, so what can you do.

Five years probation is NOT a slap on the wrist. It's just a second chance. All of that time is still hanging over her head. She's going to have to be pissing in a cup for years and meeting with people all the time for years. Anywhere she goes to try to get work, she needs to notify them that she's on probation... for selling drugs. Yeah... not easy to get a good job that way. And if she fucks up so much as to get anything beyond a traffic infraction, she's going to serve that time.

Certainly a second chance is far better than most get... but a slap on the wrist? I would rather serve 6 months than spend 5 years, let alone 1 year on probation.

^^Yea...so hard....waaaaaahhhhh........waaaaaaahhhh...boo fuckin hoo. that little bitch will get off so light. shell make friends with her PO, she will pass her tests for the first year or so and theyll put her on a lighter schedule. I know people who got probation for shit and never even got called in for a single visit to see their PO,other than their first and final visits at the end of the term.

Ohhh...shell have to tell them shes on probation.....im sure any business would just turn her right the fuck down when they know who her daddy is and the rest of her 'resume.'

Its alot fuckin harder to get a job when youre locked up in Rikers for 15 years.

shit makes my blood boil

I wasn't even on probation (after doing a short stint) for a drug charge and I was getting tested AT LEAST once a week for about 9 months. The only time I didn't get tested was on my last month on a year's probation.

So let's talk about people lucking out... i.e. your friends.

Ohhh...shell have to tell them shes on probation.....im sure any business would just turn her right the fuck down when they know who her daddy is and the rest of her 'resume.'

Yeah, maybe in the movies...

I mean, seriously... think about it. She was at a university. Now she's at a community college. Obviously who her dad is doesn't matter that much.

And if she was just going to magically get a job because her dad is some construction mogul, why is she wasting her time at college in the first place? Especially a community college.

Really, think about it.

Its alot fuckin harder to get a job when youre locked up in Rikers for 15 years.

And?

What makes this more ridiculous is all you guys hating on this chick are the same ones who any other time would be saying the sentence was ridiculous and drugs should be legal anyways. But oh no, it happens to a rich person and you're jealous so now you hate on them, too.

Maybe instead of being envious of everyone elses lives and hating on people, you should try to work harder so you can live their lives since you think they're so great and have it so easy.

^And who the fuck are you?

davesoviet makes an excellent point. If this were anybody else I think the sentiment in this thread would be somewhat different.

If it was anyone else, it would have happened because the judge had compassion, not beacuse the defendant's father paid out the ass for a lawyer.

The better a lawyer you have, the lighter your sentence will be. The better your lawyer is, the more you're going to have to pay. Essentially, money gets you a lighter sentence. That's where the anger is coming from in this thread. People aren't jealous of her. They're irritated by the system.

However, I also agree with davesoviet that probation likely won't be a walk in the park for her, and that this shit is going to be over her head for a while. Yeah, she's not serving any time, but she sure as fuck didn't get off. Five years is a long time.

I agree the system is bogus. I am, after all, an anarchist. But it's obvious people here are flaming her for having access to a good lawyer and taking advantage of it.

Something tells me if she were part of different demographic, you'd have more people applauding the light sentence. I don't wish jail on anybody, rich or poor, black or white, regardless of whether the system favors them or not.

On the other hand, if she was as cocky about it and as inclined to rip people off as the articles say, then I have less sympathy for her.

I doubt probation is going to be very rough for her. Could it be? sure, but it probably won't. Most POs have giant case loads and are overworked. Being her first offense, she will be on "low-risk" probation. I'm on probation right now, for 3.5 years. I only visit my PO once every 3 months! I don't even need to do urine tests, even though one of my charges is felony possesion of heroin!

Yes, if she was a different demographic, I would applaud a light sentence. But not in terms of skin color or even her financial class (per se); my beef with her is not that she got off, but that she is a careless cunt who did not need to be selling at all in the first place (that's fine by itself; people like extra money or just the thrill of being in the game), she was extremely careless and blatant about it (dumb-fuck dealers always piss me off, no matter who they are), and the fact that she got off practically scott free with such substantial quantities and amounts moved (fine, she had a great lawyer, whatever - but this is very substantial ammo for anti-drug activists who will use this to showcase that not only poor little NYU college students are being forced to be around such horrible drugs, but also that the OMG TERRIBLE NARCOTICS UNDERWORLD has drawn in poor, little innocent white girl who just wanted to go to college and become a teacher or whatever). Maybe I have a slanted desposition to this because of my proximity not only to the university, but also to a number of students there that deal

What is this? Some kind of a sick fucking joke? 25 years for doing a little dealing on the side is absolutely ridiculous.
Even one of Britains most notorious and biggest drug barons didn't get half of that (Curtis Warren), and this bloke made hundreds of millions of pounds in drugs.
U.S. needs to get it's fucking act together with these stupid fucking laws. They're no better than S.E.A. regarding drug laws...
