Not sure what to make of this... I'm pro-pot even tho I don't use it, but I think sometimes the risks are a bit downplayed especially concerning people with mental illnesses.

Pot Death: Teen Leaps 4 Stories After Eating Marijuana Cookie

LiveScience
July 24, 2015

A teenager in Colorado died after consuming an entire marijuana cookie that contained 6 servings of marijuana’s active ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), according to a new report.

The 19-year-old man had received a marijuana cookie from his friend, a 23-year-old who bought the product from a store. The sales clerk instructed the friend to divide the cookie into six pieces, with each piece containing about 10 mg of THC, the recommended serving size established by Colorado authorities.

At first, the 19-year-old followed these instructions, and ate just part of the cookie. But after about 30 to 60 minutes, he didn’t feel any effects, so he ate the rest of the cookie, according to the report, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

Over the next few hours, the man showed erratic speech and hostile behaviors, the report said. About 2.5 hours after he ate the whole cookie, he jumped off a balcony on the fourth floor of his building, and died from trauma from the fall, the report said.

Officials determined that marijuana intoxication was the chief contributing factor to the man’s death, which occurred in March 2014. An autopsy found that the man’s blood levels of THC were above the legal limit for driving a car in Colorado.

“This case illustrates a potential danger associated with recreational edible marijuana use,” the report said.

In 2012, Colorado legalized the recreational use of marijuana, and stores selling the products opened in 2014.

Marijuana takes longer to have an effect when ingested as opposed to smoked. Peak blood levels of THC occur about 1 to 2 hours after ingestion of marijuana, compared to just 5 to 10 minutes after the drug is smoked.

“Because of the delayed effects of THC-infused edibles, multiple servings might be consumed in close succession before experiencing the ‘high’ from the initial serving, as reportedly occurred in this case,” the report said.

High doses of THC “can produce serious anxiety attacks and psychoticlike symptoms,” Robert MacCoun, a professor at Stanford Law School, told Live Science in an interview earlier this year. MacCoun previously published a commentary in the New England Journal of Medicine expressing concern about the hazards of edible marijuana products for children and teens.

In February this year, Colorado instituted new rules for the packaging and labeling of edible marijuana products, requiring these products to contain no more than 10 mg of THC, or to have clear marking of each 10-mg serving, the report said.

However, the new report suggests “a need for improved public health messaging to reduce the risk for overconsumption of THC,” the researchers said.

Sad story, and also one that the media might try to put a slant on.
Someone who takes many times the recommended dose /suggested limit of a psychoactive substance may suffer ill effects.
If he had drunk 6 times the suggested limit for alcohol... at least, if there were a suggested limit?... what might have happened?
This is not fundamentally about the drug. It is about human ignorance and education.
The great potential benefits of cannabis involve some risks, which can be reduced through education.

Sad story...

in other news, so commonplace its not even covered, alcohol causes insanity, violence and death all day everyday.

This can't be true, we all know Alcohol is perfectly safe. I mean, they sell it in stores ffs!

Yeah...recent headlines

Man dies instantly after lighting firework on head..
Texas man accidentally shoots himself while celebrating his 21st Birthday..

I think what confuses me is this statement: "Officials determined that marijuana intoxication was the chief contributing factor to the man’s death, which occurred in March 2014."

Is it a slow news day? Rehashing the same story we already had? Or did it take 18 months to determine that THC was in the person's blood? Also one has to wonder what other contributing factors are involved.

Yes it is sad, we can look around at 1000 sad things things that happened today. So did we really need to dig up the bones of this outdated story or did I read wrong?

I think you guys are kinda missing the point. Why does a single cookie contain 6x the recommend dose?

why does a jar of mayo. contain 40 servings?

if we packaged everything in single servings/doses, that would be annoying, impractical and wasteful in terms of packaging.

i agree with slimvictor: "This is not fundamentally about the drug. It is about human ignorance and education."

I heard about some woman drinking tons of water for a contest to win her son a wii. She died from drinking too much water. It's not that different from this. Too much of anything will kill you. Natural Selection at its finest...

Considering this is a duplicate thread that revolves around stupidity more than anything else. This seems suitable..

-A fun night drinking with friends turned tragic for a man in Mexico, who died when he posed with a gun to shoot a selfie, but accidentally fired the weapon.

[name redacted] was enjoying a booze-filled night with two buddies last weekend in Mexico City when he picked up his .45-caliber pistol and thought it would be a good idea to take a picture of himself,

But when the 21-year-old went to take the killer selfie, he accidentally pulled the trigger of the wood-handled pistol, firing off a single round into his forehead, according to police.-

(multiple sources, chose to remove name)

The cannabis didn't actually kill him though did it, he died from misadventure imo.

If I go drink 2 large bottles of vodka and fall in front of a train and die, the vodka didnt kill me, did it?

I was in agreement. The people I posted about didn't die from alcohol they died from misadventure.

The article doesn't claim the kid overdosed on weed. Seemingly it was a factor in his death though..

Yeah sorry, i was replying after Ho-Chi-Minh but it seems you got in before my post.

My guess is to accommodate those with high tolerances. Some people need a lot of cannabis to get the desired effect, it would be tedious and unhealthy if they had to eat several cookies to get where they want to be.

Because a jar isn't a single serving, it's a container for long term storage, whereas a cookie by design is quite obviously intended to be a single serve.

I'm sure there'd be a better way around that than shoving 6 doses into one cookie. I mean come on, at least divide it up into pieces or something.

Cannabis products are for adults. If an adult is not mature or intelligent enough to read and follow a warning/dosage label, then the problem lies with the individual adult, not the product.

From the article:

He was aware that the cookie was six doses, and he took the whole thing anyway. I am really not sure why you think if the cookie had came in six broken up pieces this would have made any difference.

I understand some individuals have odd reactions to drugs, cannabis included. Wouldn't most people just fall asleep on a dose like this though? I haven't smoked marijuana in a long time and never ate it.

cool, no problem
