Post-Punk

all of those bands sound alot alike musically except Interpol. i'm guessing you've listened to their catalog and just didn't enjoy it..if so, there's no hope, but if you haven't i want to encourage you to give them another try because I'm convinced of the magic in their music

Suburban Lawns. OMG. This is awesome. :D <3

It sounds like she's singing, "oh my genitals". =D

I know I preach the gospel like a rabid evangelist, but no post-punk thread could be complete without Felt.

Ten albums and ten singles in ten years, most of them made in near-poverty. They even released two instrumental LPs, one of them consisting entirely of cocktail bar jazz. Criminally ignored and underrated, at least till Stuart Murdoch started namechecking them. At which point lots of Belle & Sebastian fans went out and bought an album, expecting them to sound remotely similar, before quietly putting the record to the back of their collection.

One of the few bands who can still smash through my jaded, cynical psyche and take me into to another world entirely. <3

Oh, and Killing Joke cannot be categorised, ultimately. They're just Killing Joke. Which will do for me.

Surely early Polly Jean is of this genre

Wut?. 8o

No way. :|

Post-punk is a rock music movement with its roots in the late 1970s, following on the heels of the initial punk rock explosion of the mid-1970s. The genre retains its roots in the punk movement but is more introverted, complex and experimental. Post-punk laid the groundwork for alternative rock by broadening the range of punk and underground music, incorporating elements of Krautrock (particularly the use of synthesizers and extensive repetition), Jamaican dub music (specifically in bass guitar), American funk, studio experimentation, and even punk's traditional polar opposite, disco, into the genre.

Elasitca are though ? ,cos i think that they are definatley commercial Brit Pop n not very good example of that good apart from one or 2 songs .

I get confused with genres n sub genres its either decent or not imo.

Each to their own . btw what genre do The Fall come in2 ? n what about PIL surely they fall in2 this genre ?

Elastica were Brit Pop, not Post Punk. They were influenced by The Fall though. Who were a Post Punk band. :)

I agree about genres, but I just have a soft spot for Post Punk. Therefore I want to share my discoveries with everyone as a lot of it is fairly obscure. Most people can't seem to differentiate between Post Punk, Punk, New Wave, and New Romanticism though.

Here's another cool track. :)

I'll go with i'll go with post sub-punk anyways I love the thread and I do enjoy a lot of the same bands. I think you may have missed a few big ones. I did not see Depeche Mode mention. They might even be Kings of this genre you speak of.
How about Love and Rockets or even Duran Duran. Speaking of Love and Rockets and to go along with the more Gothic side of this thread Bauhaus is wonderful. You can't beat Peter Murphy's voice. once more good thread and good music taste. Okay sorry Kenickie
did mention Bauhaus. Stopthedrugwar

I wandered into this thread. And I am enjoying everything in it. Thanks for exposing me to new music

Fugazi??? Like Minor Threat??? No Way straight edge hardcore down the hall to the left.

I'm a big fan of The Cure's first album. Interestingly enough, I don't think there's a single synth-line on the album.

I was listening to it last night and it dawned on me that it could be considered post-punk.

I like the way Robert Smith sounds a bit detached. And how they sound kinda funky.

^That's actually my favourite Cure album, and yeah, I would be inclined to agree that it leans more towards the post-punk side of things. For those who're wondering which album it is:

Glad to hear that. :)

I would never think of Duran Duran as being post-punk in a million years. They were a pop band. They were new romanticism and lumped in there with other bands such as Spandau Ballet and the like. As for Depeche Mode, definitely not post-punk either.

I just found an interesting channel on youtube which has clips of said bands, even though it goes a bit new wave in places. T'is still quite relevant in places: Post Punk Junk
