Possible Serotonin Syndrome?

About a month ago I consumed about 240mg of MDMA, i split the pill into two half's and consumed one around 8pm, (I also smoked some weed throughout the night, not much though) then the I necked the other half at 10pm. The entire roll was really good, then around 2am I came down and then took 90mg of Codeine to help me relax.

I was laying down in my bed, on my back, not sure how long passed, but suddenly I felt like i was being electrocuted, my eyes starting rolling around uncontrollably, I could see flashes of light, like sparks of electricity, i lost feeling of my jaw and it started moving around without any sensation very rapidly. The electric feeling, very familiar to the feeling of static on old televisions, then the feeling of electricity spread all around my body, I then jumped out of bed, fearing there was a lose wire behind the bed, the muscles in my arms starting tensing up, my first thought was that I was having a stroke, I had a friend with me who helped me calm down, and he/I refrained from calling an ambulance.
I had a "ring" of static electricity around my head, i could hear a steady "hizzzing" sound from my ears, (i believe this was my brain swelling; pushing gas out through my ears), i'm assuming this because I had a kind of "pressure" headache. All of the effects built up and became really intense around 3am, I went really light-headed, but i couldn't sit down, due to the need to move otherwise the electric feeling would become unbearable, so I basically dragged myself around the room for a couple hours until they had slowly calmed down.

I ended up going to sleep around 5am-6am, my entire body was drained, like I had been up for days, I went to sleep thinking I wouldn't wake up, I then woke up at about 7.30am the same day. I still had the static electricity feeling all over my body when I had woken up, but not as intense. As the day went by the feeling slowly disappeared. The next day I felt fine, just very confused and stressed.

Does anyone have a similar experience or know what this was? Also i'm assuming it's unsafe for me to consume MDMA for a long time, is this a correct assumption? (As it's new years i'm very tempted to tonight...)

Thanks.

I don't think it's serotonin syndrome. That term is bandied about a lot, and mostly completely unfounded, serotonin syndrome is a very nasty set of symptoms, i, nor anyone I know personally has suffered from it, despite caning many times the quantities you consumed.

Folley will be along in a minute, she has personal experience of over 10 cases of serotonin syndrome, so will no doubt be able to diagnose you in a flash.

Thank you, just for some back ground information I have rolled about 10 times in the past 3 months.

You are unlikely to have serotonin syndrome especially from such a relatively small dose. It sounds like it got too much for you, you paniced, and jumped to conclusions. You had a comedown from 240mg MDMA after an intense time, that's pretty much it. A lot of what you described is anxiety feeding off more anxiety.

You should be okay to take MDMA, just reduce your dose to 120mg+50mg redose.

EDIT: Just saw you've got on it 10 times in 3 months. I personally would take a couple weeks off, give your body some time to recover.

I have stayed off everything for nearly a month now, I'm just really paranoid it may happen again.

if you're really worrried about the "comedown" that much it will ruin your roll, so don't bother, do another drug instead.

having stayed off for a month, there will be no, or extremely negligible effects/deficiencies, and you're roll won't be affected by anything physiological, just psychological.

Worrying about it is only going to make things worse. There's a difference between being vigilant and worrying yourself into a bad experience.

Okay, thanks for reassuring me. A question though, can serotonin syndrome happen after a large single dose of MDMA or is it by abusing it over a period of time? Or both?

I can't tell you it will never happen, but it is EXTREMELY unlikely. You are extremely unlikely to get eaten by a shark everytime you go for a swim, but it might happen.

Fair point. The only thing which really freaked me out was the electric/static feeling over my body, apparently it's called a brain shiver.

there is actually a very easy qualitative test for serotonin syndrome that can be done: its called ankle clonus and involves moving the ankle around and then quickly flexing and holding it in the upward position... (look on youtube for examples) most ppl experienceing serotonin syndrome will indicate using this test.. (a positive result is a set of involuntary twitches in the ankle after the flex and hold is performed)...

now as far as OP i have to disagree about it not possibly being serotonin syndrome; there are mild versions of it (e.g. not everyone gets a 104F fever and goes into convulsions)... its entirely possible that OP simply had a mild version but of course this is all speculation at this point anyway..

Apart from the jaw movement, I had no involuntary movement that I was aware about. Either way, with a 100mg dose and no redose, I should be okay tonight right?
