Okay, so, two nights ago, I did a 2nd plataeu DXM trip. No problems here, everything went fine.

The next morning (10 hours or so after taking them DXM), I took a stacker 2 pill. STUPID idea. I didn't know one of the ingredients, Yohimbe, was an MAOI and could be fatal if taken after DXM. I had a HUGE panic attack, my body temperature spiked, I got cold sweats, and my heart was racing. I had all of the symptoms of Serotonin Syndrome except for hallucinations. The symptoms didn't really subside until 7 hours later, when I decided to go to bed.

Today, I feel normal, my heart rate and body temperature are perfectly fine. Will I be okay? Or do I need to go see a doctor? I'm not sure if Serotonin Syndrome sticks or if it's just an acute reaction that goes away if you don't die.

What you experienced sounds like serotonin syndrome to me. Do not mix DXM with MAOIs.

If you're feeling okay now it shouldn't be a problem. Serotonin syndrome is an acute thing as long as you stop consuming the drugs that caused it in the first place.

I'm just worried now 'cause some medical site said "Serotonin syndrome can be fatal if not treated, when treated symptoms go away within 24 hours". I was never treated, so I was wondering if it was still here, yet "dormant".

I do think you'll be okay, just don't consume any more drugs that interact with serotonin (even slightly, this includes amphetamines) for at least 48-72 hours.

Caffeine is okay, but if you're experiencing any anxiety or heart issues, I would avoid it completely.

It really depends, as far as the DXM time line goes. I would wait as long as possible, but at least 72 hours.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor or registered pharmacotherapist.

Yohimbine is not a MAOI in appreciable quantities. The reason that it is ill-advised to mix it with other drugs is it has strong effects on adrenergic autoreceptors, confusing your body into thinking there's less adrenaline and norepinephrine in the synapse and making it release more. The end result is a flood of norepinephrine and adrenaline at the synapse that can be "mistaken" for serotonin syndrome. It's very unpleasant and can spike your blood pressure through the roof while causing anxiety, but I doubt it's fatal except in extreme overdoses.

It doesn't help that DXM blocks your body from reabsorbing the norepinephrine, either.

It's not serotonin syndrome - usually by the time that has set in, you're physically crippled, overheating, and even calling an ambulance would seem like a tremendous effort. I think it's just an overly stimulated brain.

Well, it's been over a week since that happened and haven't done any yohimbe since. Should it be okay to take DXM now?

Yeah serotonin syndrome is a medical emergency. You can get milder symptoms of it (overheating, muscle rigidity etc) from mixing serotinergic drugs especially with a MAOI, but to have technical serotonin syndrome would mean you needed medical treatment ASAP.. glad you have recovered, think of it as a warning to be careful with DXM and other serotinergic drugs in the future! :)

You don't necessarily have to have medical treatment...it usually isn't fatal, but you THINK your gonna die for sure. Taking a box of corcidin(DXM+Chlora*somthing*anti-histamine I can't spell) in withdrawal, followed by Ultram and Hydro I got my hands on later lead me to the "unique" experience of Serotonin Syndrome, and um, NEVER AGAIN, EVER. I couldn't trip DXM even if I never touched dope again!!!However, if you are worried about it happening again, get some Cyproheptadine. It's a RX 1st generation anti-histamine that has the unique effect of blocking serotonin. And I swear to you, they knock it right out.I discovered it by accident, but man did it save my ass at the time. I am particularly sensitive to Serotonin problems, so it's very useful for me.And if your tripping DXM which puts you at risk, a couple of tabs could make the difference in whether or not your going to the ER

If you think you have it, don't attempt to self treat yourself with cyproheptadine or anything else, get yourself to a hospital..

Technically there is no seperate identity known as "serotonin syndrome". It is a continuation of the side effects people get taking serotinergic drugs (increased temp, muscle spasm, sweating etc) but to a dangerous level. I prefer calling it serotonin toxicity myself.. the problem with this is it requires the person with the symptoms to make a judgement about how badly they have it and clearly this isn't appropriate for people without medical training, who may be confused as part of the syndrome anyway!

I am not doubting what you had was somewhere on the continuum from mild side effects to something fatal, andn cyproheptadine is a treatment for serotonin syndrome, you are right, even in hospitals but I strongly feel that people should be seen by a doctor and treated under medical supervision for something that can be fatal..

I'm closing this thread now. Thegreatgeno, if you have waited a week you should be okay taking DXM but not with any other serotinergic drugs or MAOIs.

Serotonin syndrome for those who don't know about it
