Subject: Mid twenties, 6'4", 280-300 pounds. In excellent health. Very experienced with psychedelics, but near enough to being opiate naive.
Substance: Five dry poppy pods, "gigantheum" (or is it "giganthemum"? I've seen it spelled both ways) variety.
Report: A few weeks ago I was having unbearable headaches with nausea, and took a trip to the doctor. My family has a history of migraines, but I'm not one of those people who just "gets headaches" every now and then. When I get headaches, they're usually of the highly-motivated, Herculean variety. I missed a couple of days of work, and decided to go to the doc to get a note, and to make a long story short he prescribed me Hydrocodone (5/500) and Phenergan (25mg). The first did nothing for the headache, and the second did nothing for the nauseau... but the hydros introduced me to opiates.
I've always more of the psychonautic persuasion, and while I've tried a laundry list of other drugs, my only exposure to opiates were the laughably ineffective codeine I was given years ago after my wisdom tooth extraction. While the hydros are nothing amazing (tried up to four pills, Cold Water extracted), I found that the sedation and (very) mild euphoria were nice. I figured I'd save the rest of the pills for a rainy day, and give opiates a shot with poppy pod tea. I procured some dried pods from the Papaver fairy and set about making tea.
My first two attempts were with three pods. The first time I succeeded only in making a mess, and ended up dumping the gunk down the drain. The second time I ended up with a disgusting, mucky brew because I couldn't strain the shit. I drank it anyway, and found the experience wanting. (I've pretty much determined that I'm not just a hard head with psychs, but with everything. Still, RCs have conditioned me to try new substances at low doses, and I'm a firm believer.) Finally I decided to do some ground work and picked up a small mesh strainer (2 dollars at Wal-Mart), and some cheesecloth. It's 1.50 or so at Wal-Mart (Hardware Department-- took me forever to find it). They also have it at Lowe's in the paint department for about 2 dollars.
This completely did the trick. It's so much easier to filter the mash this way. I then added a peppermint tea bag to the still-piping hot poppy tea, and added some sugar. This was about as effective as pissing into a whirlwind. The stuff tastes foul, but it's not unbearable. A glass of Sprite and a jolly rancher were enough to get the taste out of my mouth, and I didn't have any residual nausea (but that's common for me-- I have a strong stomach).
The experience is perfect. I came into it with no preconceived notions. I'm not looking for some kind of heroin surrogate or anything, I just wanted something with a touch of dreamy euphoria that would be relaxing and perhaps a little soporific, without having to deal with popping pills.
I plan to blend the rest of my pods and shake the mixture to homogenize it, so that I can dose by weight. As it stands though, I think the equivalent of one additional pod would probably be about the sweet spot for me. The experience is nice, but making the tea is a little time consuming, and so I can't see myself doing this more than once a week-- which is good, since by all accounts the withdrawals are a bit unpleasant if you dose more often.
For people who are accustomed to harder opiates, the experience would probably be lacking unless you used an uncomfortable number of pods. I'd say it'd probably be just enough to get you by. For people who are looking for a smooth introduction to opiates though, I think it's quite nice, and the pods are readily available without having to deal with the sort of people who sell pills. Just respect the plant!
