Poppy plants to tea

Hi, just want to ask this question. Just say someone has a small garden of poppies they've seen, i.e http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/1653/img5482b.jpg, it's been lanced a couple times or so, how would they be harvested to make tea. As far as I know, people say cut about 5-6inches of stem and pods, dry them together kind of like how dope can be dried, "naturally" hung up in a shed somewhere for anywhere from 1-3 weeks. Then grind them VERY finely, put amount into tea bags and make some tea to enjoy?

With this method, I am just wondering, is it good or bad to have the plants lanced for the latex? And if it's ok to not bad, is 1-3 lancings ok? *And* (heh) should they be cut down immediately following the final lancing or give them 3-5 days in between as "per usual" with lances? Or should they not be lanced at all if possible if being harvested for tea?

Cheers, I really haven't seen this answered anywhere and just seeing if people have thoughts on this? Or would it be better moved to somewhere else? Do AusDD peeps at all have 'intimate' knowledge on lancing poppies and/or making tea with them, excluding using the "poppy seeds in water" method to make tea? Sorry if my lack of research is showing, 'tis a bit hard to find LOTS of time, I'm taking care of my 13 month old daughter <3 and pregnant wife with our final child (if born, 2 is enough! hehe). [snip]
Thanks for anyone helping!!! <3<3:D

Lancing will make the pods weaker but most people prefer to the tea having opium. Just lance as much as you need, leave for a few days then hang out to dry and test the strength by working up in tea strength.

You could lance them then collect the goo (opium) and eat/smoke it and then use the pods themselves to make tea.

For green pods: Throw in a blender, steep plant matter in hot (not boiling) water for 30 minutes. Strain. Drink.

For dry pods: Crush dried pods to as fine a powder as possible. Put poppy powder in coffee pot, steep for 30 minutes and strain.

Did my first poppy crop this year so should be able to help answer your questions.

It's fine to lance the pods 1-3 times over the weeks. As long as you do it properly and don't damage the pod too much. Yours look fine in that picture. Just do one lance on each pod at a time, wait a couple days then do it again. Keep in mind rain will dilute the opium and make harvesting difficult.

The alkaloids will replenish a certain amount after each lancing, so wait maybe a week or two after your last lance to harvest. Cut as much as the stem off as you want, doesn't really matter too much. Even after the lancing the pods will still contain goodies...you can dry them out like you said or just freeze them and make tea/eat raw. You can also just leave them on the plant to dry out, when you hear a rattle when you shake them they're ready.

I normally just freeze and eat raw....I remove seeds, crown and stem then cut in quarters. I'll then chew up a quarter at a time while they are semi-defrosted and wash down with juice....they don't taste very nice but not horrible, it helps if they are still a bit frozen as it reduces the taste. I personally find the tea with fresh pods to be not as strong as just eating them, haven't got room to dry them out so I didn't bother.

My Crop 2010

Personally I wouldn't bother with lancing if you don't have many plants. They will be weaker if you lance and it also exposes you to much greater risk - if someone sees lanced pods and reports to police you'd definitely be in trouble...if they are not lanced you'd have nothing to worry about IMO (although I'm sure there's still a certain amount of risk)

This might sound strange, but despite having tiny pods and having weaker latex, the setegerums seem like great producers to me because they have SO MANY pods, and unlike the somnis the entire plant seems to be a good source of latex. You can lance the stems and use some rolling pappers to collect it.

Found the same thing with my 'tazzie' strain (this is the strain you'll get from most supermarket poppy seeds'

My last plant that I've kept going is on about it's 17th pod with more flower buds coming. When I clip a pod good latex will drip from the stem for a while...usually leaving a little black chunk along with black drips all over the leaves :\

I think it's because of the 'long spring' we've had...AFAIK poppies normally die out in the hot summer here. This plant was also growing through the winter so it had plenty of time to bulk up...the main stem is more like a trunk, about as thick as a beer bottle.

My lil plants are insanely nice to me (growing everywhere) in the little areas they are in. As said, the longer than usual spring, non 'boiling' weather has been good, I picked a great year to begin my brown thumb ;)

Learnt a lot also from various actions/mistakes and so. Thanks to the people who have helped me with info, either here or via PM :)

Setegerums are nice because they not illegal, even 'technically'. They are a different species.
