Misc Poppy Plants (Papaver Somniferum) Identify?

About 3 weeks ago i planted quite a few poppy plants (papaper somniferum) and they get automatically water and everything and decided to check them today and found about 45-52 plants in my garden. However, i want to make sure i am actually looking at the right plant. What do poppys look like at this early stage? Is it just one stem or does it kind of branch out a bit? The ones i have appear to have mini flowering pods on them and ive never seen them until i planted these seeds. They arent anywhere else in my backyard but the area i planted the seeds. Their sizes range from 1/4 inch up to 3 inches. Anyone with knowledge in the growing process of papaver somniferum i would be happy to hear your input. (Notice: It is legal for me to grow and cultivate papaver somniferum in my area.)

There are different species under the genus papaver that have morphine, codeine, and other opiates in them. However, the species with the highest content (by far) is papaver somniferum (check for subspecies, there is the larger opium poppies called papaver somniferum somniferum and there is a smaller type called papaver somniferum setigerum). So you have the right species, but it's all up to how you plant them and how you care for them. As they grow into pods, you make incisions all around each pod and let the sap ooze out. A good pod should be at least the size of a golf ball, anything smaller is no good. Collect the sap into aluminum foil or a little baggie and let it air dry overnight. It'll turn brownish black and that is opium (contains mostly morphine and a bit of codeine, among other minor alkaloids including thebaine, noscapine, etc). You can smoke that or further refine it into pure morphine (difficult to do). But you need a whole field of poppies in order to get at least a sizable amount of stuff, otherwise it's a waste of your time.

The one distinguishing feature I have used to distinguish somni from orientale are the "spiky" leaves of orientale vs the smoooth, waxy leaves of somni, as well as the presence or absence of rough "hairs" on the poppy stem - somni's are smooth and orientale have big hairs.

Besides Papaver somniferum and Papaver orientale, there are many other species under the genus "Papaver". There's P. alpinum, P. pseudo-orientale, P. fugax, P. dubium, and many others. Many of them carry some opium alkaloids, but very minute amounts. P. somniferum is the species which produces the highest levels of morphine and codeine, by far.
