"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
Pope Francis on Monday joked that he did not have to "take drugs" when questioned by a journalist as to the secret of his energy during a whirlwind tour of three Latin American countries.

The 78-year-old pontiff delivered about two dozen speeches and said several masses during a weeklong trip to Ecuador, Bolivia and Paraguay.

"You would like to say that I take drugs!" he said in jest, speaking in the plane flying him back to Rome from Asuncion, Paraguay's capital.

"Mate is what helps me," he said, referring to a traditional caffeine-infused beverage popular in the pope's native land Argentina.

"I have never tried coca. That should be made clear," he said, smilingly after Bolivian authorities said they did not exclude him chewing coca leaves to deal with the altitude in La Paz, perched 3,600 metres (11,800 feet) above sea level.

I agree... Catholics leaders are often more cunning then bankrupt you and worth every penny lawyers.

Somethings in this article gets lost in translation?

So just because he "does not have to".. well thats an interesting wording.. could mean he chooses to take them.

"Did not exclude him".. more translation mix up or does this mean he took them.. not because he had to.. mind us.

I guess looking for drug wisdom from a "straight" Pope is like asking a Catholic priest about marriage problems.

Jet setting his way around to see the poor.. what a saint.

Am I the only one feeling a deep contradiction here?

Yeah, so I guess caffeine isn't a drug, mate doesn't contain coca, and The Guardian puts out fraudulent news stories.

I am convinced the last one is true...

Pope Francis warns on 'evil' of drugs, opposes legalization

Pope Francis warned on Friday against legalizing drugs, calling addiction an "evil" which he said had to be resisted without compromise.

Setting himself against the trend in several western countries to allow the use of so-called soft drugs like marijuana, Francis said narcotics were putting more and more young people in danger.

"Drug addiction is an evil, and with evil there can be no yielding or compromise, he said in remarks to a drug enforcement conference in Rome carried on the website of Vatican Radio.

Article is about a year old, but relevant to this topic.

coca tea according to The Gaurdian/flight attendant

Pope Francis drank a tea of coca leaves, camomile and anise seeds on the plane to Bolivia from Ecuador to ward off altitude sickness upon arrival at the highest international airport in the world.

Coca is the main ingredient in cocaine but people in the Andean region have chewed coca leaves or drunk coca tea for centuries for its medicinal properties.

The flight attendant said the pope drank a mix called Trimate containing the three ingredients. It was also offered to journalists on the flight.

I thought they reported he had chewed coca. Did he or didn't he?

He had coca leaf tea but that's still a drug.

I don't consider yerba mate to be nearly as strong as the different types of coffee I make in various coffee makers; but I sometimes drink yerba mate, or guayusa.

As a professional he does at least wine regular.

But don't know whats the deal, too. Coca leaves or tea is not really stronger then a black tea - while mate is the strongest caffeinated drink i ever had. Almost every tourist in la paz will be greeted with coca tea in the hotel lobby for the attitude sickness. Its not really a shady underground thing. They sell the leaves even as tourist souvenir in official gift shops.
