poll: who believes in methadone and who doesnt?

For some, methadone makes a "normal life" possible - without it, they wouldnt be able to work or do anything without some opioid to satisify the physical and mental need for the drug...
OTOH - MANY, MANY, MANY methadone users agree that methadone is harder to get off of then heroin...
My opinion? I think there are are better ways if you truely wish to quit opioid use ...

ididnt ever say it was easy to get off. i simply said it has served its purpose for me. i recomend it if your down in a hole and strung out on dope.
if your on the right dose, you will not want any other opiates. you wont feel them if your above 50mgs anyways. and you wont wanna shoot methadone. at least i never had the urge. it satisfies your opiate cravings.

I don't agree that methadone makes the withdrawl worse or pro-longed. For someone who doesn't have a big habbit , then methadone is pointless but if you have a huge , long term habbit , then going into a methadone program would be useful. If you play your cards right at the clinic , they will ween you off very slowly over a period of time until the withdrawl isn't very bad at all.
For those who want to kick and have a low to moderate habbit , just get an outpatient detox with clonadine. clonadine is a blood pressure medication that has an effect on opiate receptors and is one of the only drugs that calms down the opiate cravings without being an opiate in itself. If you want to kick for real , go for the clonadine.

Yea, im not a real hardcore user, i've been mainly a pill junkie for the past 6 months. All I want is a way to satisfy my craving without cramming my veins full of these goddamn pill binders and etc....But I like opiates, and want to continue getting high.........

at times i wish i would have laid in bed sick instead of getting on this clinic. im 25 and hooked on fucking methadone now. oh well, everyone does something, i like opiates.

I think methadone is a good idea in theory, but I don't know whether or not it works out so well in practicality.
One of my really close buddies has been in and out of a lot of rehab centers, jail, etc. (drunk driving offenses and cocaine addiction). One thing I remember him telling me was that all the junkies would come to the group meetings all smiley while everyone else was in a shitty mood. It just makes me wonder whether the crutch is a good thing or not. I definitely see the use for tapering off after long term use, but as constant maintenance it is a cop out.
Of course, I've never been addicted to heroin so I don't really know much about it.

constant maintenance it is a cop out

i can see what u mean it aint ideal. But maintainance does have advantages. Firstly, if ppl are stabalised on an opiate that is legally obtainable and of the same strength we wouldnt get so many OD deaths. Secondly, i have seen with UK maintainance many ppl getting off opiates for good casue they eventually get bored if they constantly get what they need. It also prevent lots of aquisitive crime and stops the illicit user from living a chaotic lifestyle and enables many to work and live productive lives.

KANE - how much clonidine did they give u? and did you still feel bad? As i had that years ago without success - the only thing that got me off opiates was Subutex which was pretty painless other than 2 months of chills and insomnia.
Has anyone else used Subutex (buprenorphine) in the UK nearly every detox is using this with high success rates. In fact it works too well for many casue they dont feel much when they cluck they go straight back on it knowing that Subutex will get em off it again.

hey buddy i thought i cant do subutex cause it will put me in an instant detox? buprenophine (sp?) is on my list of the 5 drugs i can not do.
that along with stadol, nubain, tramadol, and talwin. thats weird ebeneza. now if i was on heroin and instead of getting on methadone, i got on subutex, now that would be ok.

Except for the nausea, I had a great time on methadone! I took 4 pills and they were small so I'm guessing they were 10mg. Anyway, they sure fucked me up and I was in a whole other world. The closed-eye visuals were amazing! They were more real than reality.

i've now been on long term maintenance for over six years. i wish i'd never started on it most of the time (my teeth are fucked, its a hassle with travel for work or play, and it costs me more to get stoned when i want to) but when i'm honest i know there is no way i was going to stop (or cut back) on using without it, and i've been able to work, use when i want to and generally function quite well.
the evidence is pretty clear though from the Swiss trials that where users are given the choice of heroin or methadone, the heroin works at least as well, and ofttimes better in terms of helping people achieve the same results in terms of getting their lives together. and shitloads more fun! so its not methadone really, its the fact that its readily available and affordable that gives it its benefits.
i'm now in my third attempt at reduction - whenever i've gone below 20mg the other two times its been straight back to using gear every day again.
this time i'm going to ease off using subutex as a withdrawal tool for the last few weeks, then i'm going into the bush with enough gear for a week or so and easing off that way, during my holidays next year.
ps - about subutex. beware the precipitated withdrawal! working for user groups, i saw some horrible cases when it first became availablew in australia, b4 people knew what they were doing. there is virtually no way to stop it as you need massive amounts of opiates to break through the bup.
if you're on 2nd day dosing (ie. once evry 48 hours) the only point at which you can use is abetween about 32-34 hours after your last dose. any earlier you won't feel it, any later and you risk precipitated withdrawal after your next dose.
and if you are on subutex maintenance, if you are in an accident and need analgesia the amount needed to cut through your bup is so much that no doctor would prescribe it without knowing you were on done. so if you'r eincoherent you might end up in absolute agony because your not getting enought pain releif
the australian national user peak body AIVL worked with Beckitt Renkiser on and advisory book which has a medical advice card at the back. carrying one of these or a MeicAert bracelet can pass on vital info when you can't.

thanx mibrane. i agree with on you the fact that methadone is available. if i had heroin everyday i could function to. although, i have gained weight while on methadone and look much healthier. heroin had me all skinny and ate up.
methadone has helped me alot. i am not going to be a lifer though. i do want off this stuff someday. i have doctors that will help me get off when im ready. once i get low, i will ahve something to cushion the detox. nothing strong, but something. we'll see. im not sure what its going to be just yet. thanx for all the info.
