Hmm. I would have thought that diverting coastal rivers would have had as much an effect on the environment, if not bigger, than a desalinisation plant. I'm not sure how it is done here.
Wouldn't a better idea be just not let the drains go out to sea but instead direct them to a reprocessing plant? Obviously easier said than done but seems less drastic than diverting rivers (which from my knowledge is a general no-no as it's often a disaster) and not viable in places without much rain.
