hey man, just had this debate with a friend. he was saying the police were not necessary and were a joke. my arguement was that we need them to complete the everyday jobs that either no one else is trained to complete, or due to bystander apathy, they are not willling to complete. my basic summing up was that if drugs werent involved with the law(which they shouldnt be), the police would be fantastic. what is everyones opinion? are police necessary? or do you think society could function without them? any opnion is welcome.

Police are necessary, without them everything would be rather chaotic. Although I think this I don't excuse them for locking up "criminals" of victim-less crimes. The "it's just my job" or "I was told to do it, it wasn't me" doesn't excuse it.

I notice that people in my position tend to see cops not in a sense of law enforcement, but rather as a dangerous gang member or in the sense of foreign soldiers in an occupied land. In other words they can't see themselves as criminals, because it's irrational to. One watches for and avoids cops as one watches for and avoids bears in the woods.

well if we didn't have them, it would be a dog eat dog world, and with all the poodles out there it'd seem a bit unfair. society would be fucked without them, they could go easier on drug use etc, but without them murderers could murder, and get away with it.

Society as we know it would collapse without some sort of rule enforcement. Whether it's government ordained police officers or Warlord ordained thugs with automatic rifles, someone needs to see to it that boundries are kept in place.

I'm going to move this this to SO because I only see the discussion leading to indirect relevance to the Drug Culture and the social aspects of drug use. Mods feel free to close or bump somewhere else.

i get a bit annoyed at the users who forget that drug enforcement isn't their only task. you do realize they are the ones who go after the child molesters, the murderers, the thugs who think drive by's are a way of life, the absolute scum of the universe.

if you don't like the peace officers who run your town, don't try to beat em, join em. we need more open minded people who aren't afraid of non violent offenders that commit victimless crimes in law enforcement.

just bitching about it makes you pathetic. be a part of making a change. i have said for years i would love to be a cop, just to be one that isn't the typical asshole. we need more people who aren't power hungry control freaks. those who do it for the right reasons. i knwo a few cops/swat, and they are not all shite. some yeah definitely, but not all.

yeah but a lot of people get into it purely for the power, you get the odd decent one who's down to earth, but a lot of them are cunts who get a buzz out of it. not all of them are there to help us.

Also, at least in my experience, a lot of the people who go into law enforcement aren't the brightest bulbs in the pack to begin with. Most of the ones I grew up with that went into LE majored in Physical Education in college. I don't know about you, but I'd hope for higher requirements for the people I'm entrusting to keep my society orderly. Their Final Exams consisted of throwing footballs and lifting weights for Christ's sake. 8o

well they have to get tased and squirted with pepper spray, they deserve our admiration for that :)

then again, it could just be their low test scores that got them there in the first place. ;)

srsly though, civil duty has a lot of benefits, good job, good benefits, fun work....don't assume everyone with a badge is an asshole. treat them with respect and most likely the favor will be returned.

i have just known too many damn punk ass druggies who can't even walk by a n officer without nodding a hello without their buttcheeks clenching up.

the problem is with you guys most of them time, not "them"

respect for detectives but i see no use for the job of the beat cops who troll in a cruiser performing shakedowns at will. unless one is a fucking idiot, one does not commit crime in sight of cops, and cops generally can't do shit to prevent a crime if they aren't even there while the crime is happening which they typically aren't. if a beat cop has the brains to catch any criminal he's likely already a detective anyway. the only good thing they do is conduct traffic if the lights go out in a major intersection but that isn't really an everyday thing either so fuck em

but you have to understand a majority of them enjoy being assholes, i've had many encounters with cops, and 9/10 times i co-operate, but, most of the time they like to act like wankers. plenty of people get arrested for fuck all, a friend of mine was charged with being "drunk and disorderly", he was walking home on a friday night after going to a bar and drinking, doing nothing wrong.

obviously we need them, but at least half of them are cunts.

well i dunno where you live but where i'm from, the crackheads aren't that much of a problem to society compared to binge drinkers and what-not, but the police like to act like assholes, there's no denying it.

Good Germans weren't troubled by the nazis.

I do understand that all cops aren't equal, and some are nice people and all that, but how can they justify what they do?
I was watching some jail show and they brought a guy in on marijuana with intent. The swat team busted into this guys house and busted him with his child in the house. The cop tells him the weed is dangerous for the child, he tells her the swat team busting down his door was fucking dangerous for the child. Did the cop use her fucking brain for one fucking second and produce anything close to a rational though? No, she repeats the same goddamn thing "the weed is dangerous".
If we all lived in Liberia we can hack off limbs with a clean conscience because "an authority figure told me I'm making society better".

What would we do without them?

Haha but for real, we do need police. No doubt.

nice.. only 14 posts till a godwin

Law enforcement is absolutely necessary. What needs to change are the laws. Drug laws need to be weakend and laws governing police force need to be strengthened

this is what i was saying to my friend. i think its easy to just hate cops and act like they're the biggest enemy, but honestly, when your being mugged or your house has been broken into the first thing you want to see is a few friendly, ass-kicking police. and when it comes down to it the police dont control the law, the law controls the police. although definitely agree that some amendments need to be made- and some police need to be less assholish!

No one has a gun to the cops heads to put a gun to honest drug user's heads.

No one should think I put all the blame only on cops, anyone who supports the drug war is a part of the problem. The politicians I give the most blame, they just go along with what's in style to get votes, none of them has any balls to stand up for what's right. I guess they are all too power and money grubbing. But, cops are in the dirt, doing the deed. I'd expect something to eventually click when they're arresting yet another poor dude for nothing more than being high. I do admit some drugs have justifiable arguments against their legalization, but if A cop will stand there, with a straight face and say "weed is a problem" he's nothing but a goddamn liar.

why have laws if you aren't going to enforce them.

there are plenty of cops and teachers (and a good amount of other public servants) that would benefit from a more strictly controlled filtering process that would enable a better quality of service to become of our tax dollars.

however there isn't enough money nor enough people who would pass. unfortunately we have to lower our standards in order to get the numbers we currently need to deal with the population.

i'd love to be the guy deciding whether or not someone was fit to be a cop. "i'm sorry, but you've obviously got some confidence issues, so giving you a gun and a badge to compensate would be a bad idea."

you have every right to record all traffic stops, if you have a video camera, use it.
