Police stop more than 1 million people on street

.

If we were black, I bet they'dve hassled us big time.

Sort of off-topic, but hey.

Not if you dressed like Carlton

Lol, I'm not gonna change the way I dress, I'm just gonna shove my weed behind my balls. I don't think they do anything but jiggle your pants, which will do nothing especially if you wear tight underwear (which I do)

I bet if cops find cigs, they'd try to write me a ticket.

Wow. This just ratcheted my paranoia up a few notches. I've already got a pretty serious police phobia, and until now, I've always considered myself unsafe carrying anything illegal in a car, but basically safe on foot or bicycle. There have been many times I've been walking or biking around NYC, and would not have been in a good position to be frisked. Might be worth it to dress conservatively and invest in a decent hiding device next time I'm roaming the big apple core baked.

Had a 'stop n' frisk' after first week in southern California, while driving. The officer said I appeared to be on narcotics and he had a right (probable-cause?) to search me and my vehicle; "Am I under arrest?", I asked, but he gave no answer. I stated: "I respectively decline you searching me or my vehicle without court order/warrant [based on the Fourth Amendment]." He went on and searched everything, then after an hour, let me go without any further action. Weird little Bitch

I think it would of been void if he searched regardless, that's messed up, they're supposed to ask, also does the dumbfuck know what a narcotic is?

Just the other day I was pulled over outside of Dubuque, Iowa, USA, where I live (actually with another member of this site) for speeding. 72 in a 55. That's fine, I guess, I can deal with that, but the cop immediately had me get out of my car and into his. He started grilling me about my friend in the car, and told me it smelled like marijuana. I told him that would be impossible, because it's my parents car, and I don't have anything (truth)! He asked to search and I told him the line I've always got in the back of my head "I don't consent to a warrantless search of my private property." He told me he could call the drug dogs and I told him to go ahead but I'd appreciate it if he would write my ticket and send me on my way as I had places to be. He told me "that isn't going to happen" and we waited. Dog came to the car, they had it circle around it about 10 times. Cop comes back to the car to do something and I asked him if the dog alerted. He tells me no but that they are going to search anyway because he can smell marijuana.

What the fuck!? I couldn't fucking believe it. Do I have my fourth amendment right to refuse?

He proceeded to search the car and found a little bit of xanax on my buddy, which he had a prescription for, and hauled him downtown for it. No marijuana. Not an ash, not a roach, not a little crumb of bud. Nothing. I talked to my lawyer and he basically told me there isn't much he can do about it. I did file a complaint with the Iowa State Patrol, talked to a lieutenant, he didn't seem to care much, but did say he would look into it and get back to me.

All they have to do is say they smell marijuana in a traffic stop people. It doesn't matter if they have evidence to the contrary and a refusal. If they want to search, they will. I didn't know it had come to that but apparently it has.

^ Friggin ridiculous. That story scares me, not because I may one day have something on me, but because the truth is, if they want to search, they will... and there is nothing you can do about it. How could they bring your friend to the station if he had a legit script?

I know this why its hard for me to respect pigs. I know there are cool cops who really don't care, cool cops that do care but will try to give you a ticket and not be a dick about it, and cops that are complete corrupt dickheads.

one time when i got pulled over, the officer asked if he could do a search. i told him "i do not consent to a search" and the fucking bastard said "oh well that gives me probable cause to search, since you must be hiding something!" i didnt have anything on me or in the car, but thats beside the point. fucking cunt.

also, using the 'weapons frisk' to find anything besides weapons is a violation of your 4th amendment rights.

its a violation of the constitution.there not supposed 2 b able 2 do that weather hey think it will reduce crime or not, andmost of wat they call crime iz not stuff thats bad neway, just stuff like having controlled drugz on u or watever.

Sickening. Always let cops know you know your rights.

Yeah. But they can still do it, whether you know your rights or not.

It's not.

Anywho.. Not saying that all cops are prejudiced, but being a 21 year old white student has its benefits. If I'm randomly stopped, I tend to get the "Just checking to see if everything is alright.", with no ID check.

Haha.

dealers in these cities know what in philly is known as a "jump out day" where unmarked cars are all over looking for that activity. I have had friends frisked, but I have not. Both times my friends had dope and the police didn't find it. Lol

Benefits? Depends what neighborhood you're in. In some areas that description will be the reason why you get stopped.

NYC police depts are totally racist (note: im not saying individual officers). My roomates are Marathi/Indian. I am whitey. NYC MTA has a policy where all backpacks and large packages are subject to random search, and they have random stings at subway entrances on the regular. I have never once been stopped to search. They see im white, they nod their head, and just let me and all the drugs i have on me walk past*. My roomate, who is very dark skinned, gets searched 100% of the time. We joke about it, but its really not funny.

Racial profiling is a huge problem here.

No one can stop you and frisk you for nothing. They might do that, but its illegal. I live near a ghetto and cops will try to harass you around here sometimes, but you dont *have* to let them search you. Theyll try things like pressuring you into letting them search, or try to use words/phrases in a deceitful manner that implies you must consent to a search, but its illegal to force you unless you are being arrested. The only time they can legally force you to submit to a search of anything is any carrying parcel you have while in the subway. Not your pockets, ever.

Still, they take advantage of the uneducated, and search people all the time anyways. Also you have to realize how many FOBs we have here. Foreigners who have just arrived in the USA to live have no clue what the laws are, and are often taken advantage of. Even a minority born in the USA that has lived his or her life in the 'hood without any real means of education or is not knowledgeable on the law can be very easily taken advantage of, on the street or in the courtroom.

* note: even if i were searched, my shit stays in my pockets, where they dont have the right to rape me (yet).

People have a saying here anyways: Old New York is back. Cops are becoming more corrupt. Crime is on the rise (fuck your news, maybe youre arresting more people for smoking pot or having a bag of coke on em, but that doesnt stop the stabbings/muggings/rapes/etc that happen in the bad neighborhoods on a regular basis). I dont care what the news is, I live here, crime is by no means lowering. Racketeering is on the rise, its impossible to even defend yourself from your landlord sometimes. Until the economy gets better (lol), its only going to get worse, and police are just going to become more corrupt (but im sure the news will tell everyone in midtown that all is well and their shit doesnt stink).

^ That was a really informative post, Woody. Thanks. From what you're saying, being white, I don't think I'd want to live in a neighborhood of NYC populated largely by people who aren't cool with white Americans, because that attitude would likely extend to the local police precinct too. I think I'd sew a special pocket onto the crotch of each of my boxers too, if I lived in NYC.

I've had a couple near panic attacks while walking through thick rush hour crowds in midtown Manhattan, and suddenly emerging out of the sea of humanity in front of me is none other than a policeman on patrol with a K9 at his feet. People have told me not to worry, because they're just anti-terrorist patrolmen, with dogs that only sniff for explosives. I say bullshit, those are DRUG DOGS looking for harmless pot smoking and coke hooting NYers, so the NYPD can prop up an overspent budget. Fortunately I've never gotten close enough to know for sure.

There are a few neighborhoods near my place where there is a lot of open dealing & crack smoking. I avoid these as I have been hassled just for walking through.
My friend had his script confiscated after he was stopped leaving his pharmacy - he is legit and only takes meds for pain but that did not stop the cops. When he went to the station to get it back he was told "what script? we have no record of you being stopped."
A few years back a friend of mine who dealt pot was stopped evey week and searched. If he did not have "enough" cash and pot on him they went back to his apt and tore it apart. He was never charged with anything and his money and dope were confiscated with no record of the stop/bust ever being made. It was/is sickening. Some police here are rude and abusive, some are polite and caring - you just never know what you are going to get on a particular stop.
BTW, this is Canada where I believe the police have even more limitations on search and seizure than most parts of the US. You would not know it from what I have heard though!

It pisses me off how corrupt cops can be, they always use the fitting description shit on anybody. I'd say here its equal because they will harass white people (I guess that dress like us lol)

Some cops are nothing more than criminals/bullies with a badge and a gun.

Oh so tired

I bet alot of good officers are tired of this shit too....can't even do there job cause of psuedo-moral bullshit Here's to hoping it changes...here's to battin down the hatches. Much love for those tied up in the struggle.

Well, my aunt's neighbor trains K-9s for the FBI, and I know a bit about how the animals are used. Firstly they have to be told specifically to find their target before they start barking at something. The dogs are trained with more discipline than some soldiers, so theyre not going to just start barking at some random dude with an 8th in his pocket unless told to sniff out cannabis. Also, like you said, its quite a low chance that its a drug sniffing dog, and a high chance that its an anti terrorism dog, and its not very often that bomb/weapon sniffing dogs are trained also as drug sniffers.

I wouldnt go chill next to a k-9 if i had drugs on me, but at the same time, im not worried about one in a big crowd.

Its not dangerous to live in a non-American neighborhood. Also, good luck finding an "American" neighborhood. Ive lived in polish, russian, spanish, and dominican/hatian neighborhoods, being from the USA isnt gonna make any difference. Its really just about what you represent.

That's good to hear. Guess I'm just paranoid about that kind of thing.

You misread what I said. My father's family is all from NYC, I'm well aware of the demographics.

I was talking specifically about police searches. In college, I knew a white girl who grew up in Bed-Stuy. Her neighbors were all black, and she recalls the police there (also all black) having no sympathy for her when she was jumped, on two occasions. Her brother was also questioned a number of times by officers who jumped to the conclusion he was a white boy in the ghetto to buy drugs. Now granted, this was a decade or more ago, and only one family's experience. But it gave me pause for thought about living in a neighborhood where you stick out, if you also happen to be engaged in anything illegal. That's all I'm saying.

I used to do yayo w/two of the cops in my city, it's been the only reason that I can get out of 90% of my legal problems. Dealing to cops - having that leverage - is huge. That being said - some of the department despises those officers and will target me in a millisecond. I've had similar experiences w/searches of both my vehicles and I had one standing in line waiting for a wu-tang show!!! Dude came up too me (I had just dropped a few rolls) and was like "Whats in that water bottle" (it was water). I let him sniff the bottle and he then said that my eyes looked bloodshot and gave me the frisk (luckily i wasn't blowing up yet and I normally take everything before the club / show I go to in case of a bust!). I just look @ cops like any other person, they want their money, some want their drugs, either way I remember how powerful corrupt law enforcement is and I have tried my hardest to find a median of respect and keep friends with a few. Sigh, it does scare me because honestly these guys are so miserable at what they should be doing, meanwhile methadone clinics are under heat by my state because the locals say it brings criminals to there area. Yeah, okay, shut it down and see what happens, your "area" will have a huge influx of breakins - I can tell ya that much. What a twisted world we live in.
