Yes there are police scanner apps for your phone but I've used them and compared them to an actual scanner and theres a good 60-90 second delay and you can't choose which channels/talkgroups to listen to whereas with a real scanner you can.

There's a big difference between a radar detector and a police scanner.

^^we get the towns surrounding us and they're good for hearing whatever the cops are saying over the radio. If he orders a sandwich, you'll hear it. I guess how interesting it gets depends on how much crime is in your town

A radar detector could be good for keeping at home, but you'll be freaking out every time a cop decides to drive by
 
I wonder if there are radio buffs who can still modify a device to get encrypted channels

and wouldnt they just get the dea to serve a warrant?
 
When I was in college, the frats used to listen to the scanners to see if the cops were trying to bust their party. As far as I know, it never helped any of them avoid getting raided.
 
having a scanner in your vehicle that has police freqs programmed in is illegal on a federal level in the usa..encryption or trunking is not new but newer scanners can pick up these freqs. listening to phone convos is legal on a scanner but repeating anything you hear is a felony..(wiretap law)...
 
yea i got one on my phone and wen im driving around dirty that bitch is on not the radio i can pick my city wen im pickin up in the next town over i can hear thoes cops too
 
Radar detectors can detect a range of radar such as X band, K band, Ka band, and even laser. Police use hand held laser, hand held radar, and a radar system in their cars. While driving, they can use radar that uses K and Ka bands which can be detected but if they are not looking for some one speeding, they do not have it on. I've passed just as many police who have not had it on as as many did have it on... So that wouldn't help you at all because they wouldn't have their radar on as they come after a drug dealer
