Dont know if this is the right forum so move accordingly.

So one day my mind started wandering, and i ended up on the topic of police scanners. i happened to also be fairly high while thinking which led me to what seemed to be a crazy idea, but after a little more thought it didnt seem as nuts.

What if a drug dealer were to get a police scanner (like the ones people put in there cars to not get caught speeding) and kept it at there house?

AFAIK they can get a signal from at least 200 ft away so if a dealer were to have one of these then in theory wouldnt he be able to know if the cops were coming at any time, and therefore be able to react accordingly? they could take it with them whenever they went to do deals and the like.

Remember this is all just theory

Not all police comms can be picked up with a scanner. Tactical info is generally on a secure encrypted radio channel or via cell phone. You can bet that swat isn't going to broadcast the raid info on public radio.

I think that a lot of dealers have them. I have read stories in the news about police raids, and when the list what they found it is usually drugs, weapons, and police scanners. Obviously they didn't help those people.

There are channels that you will never hear because of the encryption codes that are used. No way around this unless you have inside information on what channels are being used for those days. Your best bet is to have a source on the inside letting you know whats going down, other than that, you are waisting your time & money buying a scanner.

well if its serious enough to bring in the swat you have much bigger problems, i`m more talking about like smaller time dealers, not drug lords.

Kaywholed i`m talking about the ones made for detecting radars that police have to see if people are speeding, it wouldnt give you information, it would simply tell you if they were near.

i guess if you were a big time dealer if the cops are coming to your house, there gonna find your shit regardless, but if you were a smaller dealer and didnt have mass quantities of drugs (and police force after you) you would be able to hide it in time.

This.

Most cities use trunking systems (look it up) and then encryption on top of that. I have a Radioshack Pro-96 scanner which can follow the trunking systems but nothing can hear the encrypted channels/talkgroups.

Yes there are police scanner apps for your phone but I've used them and compared them to an actual scanner and theres a good 60-90 second delay and you can't choose which channels/talkgroups to listen to whereas with a real scanner you can.

There's a big difference between a radar detector and a police scanner.

I have a police scanner, not a radar detector. Police scanners are what allow you to listen to police radio communications (and other radio communications as well - provided they're not encrypted).

Radar detectors just tell you if there's a police radar gun in the area. Two different things.

oh haha my bad, i meant radar detector, police scanners would be getting way more in depth. but if you had a radar detector you could simply tell if they were coming or near and react accordingly could you not

oh, well that kind of defeated my plan...... at least it wasnt as hair brained and ridiculous as i thought at first

A lot of people use them regularly while on the Interstate. They're not going to tell you if a police car is near if the police car isn't using a radar gun....they only work if a radar gun is being used....

A lot of people have and use scanners for exactly this purpose, however as noted if it is anything over very small time shit you are not going to hear it on the open comm. Channels.

On more than one occasion my scanner has come in handy if only to just let me know that I should be prepared for police contact.

Also my GF and I love to listen to the scanner at night when we are smoking as sometimes the shit going on around town can be very interesting and comical.

Scanners are FUN!!!

Listened to the cops follow my friends outta town a few times on a scanner. Radars are handy unless you get the cop who is smart enough to turn on his radar right as he is passing you. I would get one but my friend has one and still always gets pulled over.

A+ post IMO. Well said NT!

Radar scanners/ laser scanners are a great thing to have if you have a fast car or something. I have had one since about 2005 and it has gotten me out of more tickets than i have recieved. In my state if you have a radar detector and you get pulled over for speeding and that thing didnt go off you can ask to see the radar gun and if the cop cant/want show your supposed speed there is no ticket. Allthough i have gotten quite a few "You trying to get smart with me kid" responses.

The only dealer I ever knew who had a police scanner (cameras outside as well) got busted like six or seven months after I met him.

If you have an iPhone, you can download a free app that lets you listen to the police radio for whatever town you want. They probably have it for other kinds of phones too. It's actually kind of interesting. However, unless you listen to the thing 24/7, it probably won't save you unless you get really lucky or have some reason to believe the cops are on to you.
