The Curious Case of Chavis Carter

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/04/opinion/blow-the-curious-case-of-chavis-charter.html?ref=opinion

Let me get this straight: A young man is stopped by police, who find $10 worth of drugs on him; he had twice been searched by officers and then double handcuffed behind his back and placed in the back of a police car; yet, somehow, he retrieves a gun that both searches failed to find and uses it shoot himself in the right temple?

That is what police in Jonesboro, Ark., say happened on the evening of Sunday, July 29, to Chavis Carter, a 21-year-old African-American man from Southaven, Miss., a suburb of Memphis. They say he committed suicide with a hidden gun while handcuffed in the back of a police cruiser. According to a local CBS News report, his mother was told that he shot himself in the right temple, but she claims that Chavis was left-handed.

The strange circumstances of this case, which even the Jonesboro police chief, Michael Yates, called “bizarre” and said “defies logic at first glance,” have raised questions that sorely need answering.

First, some background on how Carter came into contact with police that Sunday night:

I mean, of course it's bullshit, but what they are proposing is not physically impossible. That is what will ensure that these cops will never be made to pay.

New York Times comments are among the best on the internet.

Seems legit, he probably managed to commit two or three more felonies in the process too.

I'll admit this sounds sketchy as hell, but I'm going to refrain from judgement until the supposed video/audio recordings come out. Stranger things have happened. Not saying it is likely, but who knows at this point. . .

thats what i was thinking as well.

never being arrested formally but having been searched and cuffed a few times, they are usually pretty thorough, even going to the point of flipping up the back seat and pointing out there is nothing in there and nowhere to hide anything. even a really small handgun should have been found on his person. ruger makes a 32cal pistol thats practically the size of a pack of cigs. even cops first day out of the academy are trained to find a gun on a suspect. the whole thing is bullshit.

things probably got out of hand somewhere and he got shot, plant a gun and stage the scene and you wind up with this far fetched story.

Just to play the devils advocate,or voice of reason, if that may be, they quickly frisked him before putting him in the car, sat him in their for a spell while they dealt with the other occupants and called in warrants, and then took him out and actually searched him. I could see him secreting the gun in the interim. They claim they have dash cam footage, as well as eyewitnesses that heard the shot from him alone in the cruiser. Whether or not this is the case, we don't know yet. I just don't like to jump to any conclusions without all of the facts first.

pretty hard to shoot yourself in the head whilst handcuffed behind your back tho isnt it?.. If they handcuffed him infront of his body I guess it may have been possible.

There should be GSR on his hands and on the seats (although GSR alone doesn't mean he did it, absence of GSR means he didn't)

It's not impossible. You can't bring the gun to your head, but you can bring your head into the trajectory. You can even do it accidentally while trying to ditch a gun (I've come close to making myself a eunuch).
