Police attend bath salts workshop

CANASTOTA, N.Y. -- The Oneida Nation Police Force hosted a workshop to help combat and prevent synthetic drug usage around the state.

Agencies including the State Police, New York State Parks and Recreation Department, Fort Drum Military Police, and surrounding village and town police departments were all invited to participate free of charge.

The goal of the workshop was to get every agency on the same page about how to respond to the problems and health risks caused by synthetic drugs, such as bath salts.

According to authorities, it is important to get medical attention immediately for those under the influence. They also stress the importance of approaching the user in the safest way possible.

"And then come with their plan of intervention in the situation, make sure they have medical emergency personnel correct, and then on top of that, how they handle them personally, so that they have the right blood flow pattern so they don't die in custody.

That's a big key," explained Jackie Long, Homeland Security Representative.

Long said communities and drug treatment and prevention agencies must also be involved in combating the dangerous and addictive drugs.

[ensure] they have the right blood flow pattern so they don't die in custody ... That's a big key,

Really now. Tell me more. Does the procedure for handling bath salts victims involve saran wrap and a folding chair in the back of a locked van?

They love throwing the word synthetic around like it means something is bad

"We need to stop people taking synthetic drugs"

Do they know that most pharmaceuticals are synthetic drugs?

I am concerned that this was more of a tazer training course than a harm reduction course.

I picture 30 or so cops in track suits with wooden guns repeating after their trainer "ON THE GROUND JUNKIE!"

lol there is so much shit in those various bathsalts that they are fighting a half dozen drugs then, maybe more.

correct me if im wrong but the standard "bath salt" was MDPV right? what are some of the other more popular ones that they have outlawed? mephedrone? what else? my ex gf told me her cousin was injecting bath salts and i was said WTF! just wondering what she could possibly be injecting,.

^ Yeah pretty much...

Pharmacologically, bath salts usually contain a cathinone, typically methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV), methylone or mephedrone; however, the chemical composition varies widely[4][9] and products labeled with the same name may also contain derivatives of pyrovalerone or pipradrol. In Europe the main synthetic cathinone is mephedrone, whereas in the US MDPV is more common.[4]

Very little is known about how "bath salts" interact with the brain and how they are metabolised by the body.[5] They are similar to amphetamines in that they cause stimulant effects by increasing the concentration of catecholamines such as dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine in synapses.[5] They are generally less able to cross the blood brain barrier than amphetamines due to the presence of a beta-keto group which increases the compound's polarity.[5]
