A Ross County deputy sheriff has been placed on leave after authorities say he accidentally shot and killed a woman before a drug raid on Wednesday.

Sgt. Brett McKnight was identified yesterday as the deputy whose gun went off outside a trailer that members of a drug task force were about to raid as part of a heroin bust. The bullet went through the exterior of the trailer before it struck and killed 35-year-old Krystal Barrows, according to a news release.

In the release, Ross County Sheriff George Lavender’s office said that members of the U.S. 23 Task Force were executing a search warrant about 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday at a trailer at 467 Rt. 23 S. near Chillicothe. The release said they expected to find large amounts of heroin, several weapons and a guard holding an assault rifle at the front door.

When task-force agents entered the trailer, they found Barrows sitting on the living-room couch “ in critical condition” with a bullet wound to her head. She died a short time later at Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center, where she was flown by helicopter.

A sheriff’s office news release said a man was armed with a handgun and deputies found pistols and assault rifles in the house, but it makes no mention of whether anyone in the trailer had threatened deputies with a gun or fired a gun.

Investigators with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation determined that the shot that killed Barrows came from McKnight’s weapon. McKnight has been with the sheriff’s office for 11 years, according to the release.

Yesterday, the sheriff’s office refused to give any more details of the incident beyond what was provided in two news releases.

Six people were arrested, largely on outstanding warrants, during the raid. Deputies reported recovering a large amount of suspected heroin, large amounts of cash and suspected stolen property.

The Dispatch requested the sheriff’s office incident report on the raid and shooting, but it was not released. In public-records rulings, the Ohio Supreme Court has stated that police incident reports must be released immediately.

Barrows was the mother of three sons ages 9, 14 and 19. She had no criminal record in Ross County except for a misdemeanor conviction for disorderly conduct by intoxication. Her family members declined to comment yesterday.

Predictably, some of the commenters are blaming her.

A Commenter said:
Seriously? "Large amounts of heroin, drug instruments, cash and guns were recovered from the scene.". It is bad she was killed during the raid. But no way she did not realize who she was hanging out with, and what they were doing. These were dangerous people in a dangerous profession.

...made more dangerous because of unjust laws and cowboy cops.

This story is fucked up. Cops in this country are literally getting away with murder, using violence that is way out of proportion with any real threat. You shouldn't start shooting until the threat becomes real! Oh, but it was "an accident." Who's training these guys, anyway? I bet the officer who killed the woman will only be suspended, and will be back on the job within a couple weeks. Sickening.

Unfortunately there's still a shit-ton of ignorant assholes who are like "Drugs are immoral...throw everyone in prison!"....

I really wonder what most of these self-righteous assholes have actually contributed to the world? Most Americans just buy cars and houses, financially support corporations that are destroying the planet and causing the US to lose jobs, while exploiting child labor overseas....And these people somehow think their participation in a corrupt system based on apathy, ignorance and material overindulgence makes them "good citizens"!

The idea that the United States is somehow a morally superior country that has humanity's best interest at heart is fucking laughable! People using drugs in the privacy of their own home is no more immoral than someone who goes off in the woods and just blows away random animals for fun! The latter is a clean, healthy activity...

It's just so discouraging...The web of lies that underpins our "culture" and shapes people's world-view is so vast and elaborate, it's beyond the average citizen's ability to see through it with their dim ability to actually reason things out for themselves...

And so, there's millions of people who actually believe that it makes sense to spend billions of dollars to imprison our own citizens and destroy their families all in the name of preventing people from putting certain substances in their bodies! In reality, it's the hypocrisy and lack of any true compassion and integrity in our society that drives people to attempt to escape by using drugs in the first place!

Its incredibly sad to me that people still think the war on drugs is doing anything but hurting our society.

Police are abusing there positions and murdering our citizens. When did that become ok? Because it happens everyday now.

Agreed that blues makes great points in his post.

Oops, sorry we shot you by accident!
But there were some drugs nearby, and someone could have overdosed, so they were dangerous....
Now you see why we shot you!
It's not so hard to understand!! :|

Nice post.

Is that standard protocol for police? To just shoot at a structure with no idea what is behind the walls, just on the basis of assumption?

Alright they are arresting high school kids and killing mothers.. good stuff guys.. thanks I feel better know that this all is happening.. In other news drugs are still everywhere .. it just now three children have no mother. I sure have heard allot of stories of non law enforcement officers accidentally killing people.. but in those stories they go away for manslaughter. I guess that these police unions are so powerful they are above the law.. same as it ever was.

^Some accidents are not tolerable. And it seems Cops do a lot of things "on accident" because that sounds a lot better than they do something irresponsible.

Ill bet the cop had his finger on the trigger instead of along the side rail as proper training dictates when holding a gun. Was probably all excited got startled and pop. Ooops, my bad. I just shot those 3 kids mom in the head.

Hmmm....
Go back to bed America, nothing to see here. We protect you from yourselves. Don't look at what we do, instead watch COPS, or American gladiators...you know good wholesome American entertainment. In fact, please watch cops. It will make the beatings and tazeings more commonplace and thus easier to swallow. If one of our deputies does something wrong like killing your dog..*cough, cough* or you *cough* don't worry...we can be trusted to police ourselves in a fair and just manner. You say the deputy killed your mom? Don't worry young man, we punished that cop real good with a paid vacation and a hearty pat on the back.

You know what happens to a civilian who has a license to carry a firearm and he accidentally shoots someone dead? Minimum manslaughter charges, yup. What happens to the police officer, probably a suspension and he will be sued in civil court.

But is there really a difference in those 2 situations, a person is dead from the folly of another.

It's not just Cops. It's all of TV. I've gone on multiple rants about this in F&T. Nearly everything on American TV seems to foster compliance, complacency and quietude.

For instance, Fox's new show Almost Human, a police procedural in the year 2047, shows a world in which the media still freaks about about every new drug and cops still stomp all over individual liberties in order to prosecute a drug war that's still fully active. The show's creators gave the cops a bunch of shiny new tools, but left intact the moral position that sees constitutionally protected freedoms as obstacles in the battle between good and evil.

And the new Robocop probably will be absent the dystopian social commentary of the old one.

Are we devolving?

.....the moral position that sees constitutionally protected freedoms as obstacles in the battle between good and evil.

I have absolutely no confidence in the judicial system to even uphold our Constitutional rights against things like illegal search and seizure anymore. It seems like judges just look the other way and let law enforcement run wild. Nobody seems to care....If you kick my door in with absolutely no probable cause, but do actually find illegal drugs, nobody cares about whatever flimsy excuse law enforcement used to do it. Even if the police kick someone's door in with no probable cause and find nothing, they're never held accountable for there actions. It doesn't even seem like there's a system in place to punish the judges who let it go on.
