Detectives seized more than a half-million dollars, weapons and drugs from a 14-year-old's home where they said he recently shot and killed a friend.
Surprise police said on Wednesday the incident is not a clear case of an accidental shooting and the teen is being held in jail for at least the next two weeks. His name has been withheld because he is a juvenile.

Juan Vergara, 14, died on Sept. 16, the day after he was shot in the home near Bell and Reems roads, according to Surprise police.
The discovery by police of $500,000, numerous weapons and marijuana was revealed during a hearing in Phoenix juvenile court on Wednesday.
The state also revealed it seized more than $1 million from the parents' bank accounts.

At this time, the juvenile faces one charge of negligent homicide. He was playing with a .22-caliber handgun when it fired, the bullet striking Vergara in the head, police said. He tested positive for marijuana, evidence showed.
During the hearing, the father admitted he and his son had smoked marijuana.
A social worker recommended the juvenile remain in detention and said it would not be in his best interest to be released to his parents.

The victim's brother, David Moreno, asked the judge to keep the juvenile in custody. Moreno said releasing him would "pour salt in their hearts."
The juvenile and his father apologized during the hearing. "I'm so very sorry, and all I can do is say I'm sorry," the teen said.

"Juan was like a son to me," the father said. "We're praying for their family."
Judge Dawn Bergin ordered the teen remain in detention and that the state Child Protective Services investigate the home. A hearing is set for Oct. 13.

Obviously, marijuana is to blame here. That boy's friend would still be alive today if if weren't for marijuana. Marijuana!! They never stop with that bullshit propaganda reporting, do they? I'll bet they racked their brains trying to fit the word marijuana in a 4th time without success.

It always seems to embellish their rhetoric when claiming "the evidence showed" as opposed to saying "the suspect's urine showed"..

I absolutely HATE when they do that..everytime there is a crime weed is always at the scene or they were high when it happend bla bal bla...

Kids kinda stupid tho...think man if YOU had 500,000$ a gun and some drugs and you just murdered someone...well idk bout you but i would dip into another state for a while.
He probably couldnt live extravagantly but: nice car, lb of dank to blow, and like what probably a good 400,000 left over to live comfortably as hell?? Id take the money and run...shit id do it even if i DIDNT murder someone hhahaha

Bad parenting should be illegal

We should require special training and a license to procreate.

I also firmly believe drug tests should be prohibited for parenting. As it stands hospitals freely report the presence of drugs discovered in routine health related blood work on new mothers. :\

From the names involved I think the kid and his family could have more easily gone to Mexico where they likely speak the language and can live like royalty there with $500,000 plus a million in the bank!!

I see nothing that indicates that the money belonged to the kid. The FDIC only insures your bank account to, what, half a million? If you have more than a mil in the bank as well as money invested, you would be smart to put anything left over into hard assets or cash on hand. Okay, so you have an affluent family, some drug use by the son and father, and a few handguns around, and not enough education on gun safety. Sounds like your average wealthy white American family, to me. Seems like there is some racism, as well as some reefer madness at work here.

lol so the article is basically saying that he shot his friend in the head because he was HIGH ON MARIJUANA!?!? lol are u fucking kidding me, its like that old ass commercial from the 80's where the kid is playing with a gun after smoking pot and blows his friends head off and starts laughing... like seriously, wtf media?!?!?

Propaganda at its finest. I wonder if they will make a DUI commercial where the guy is totally drunk, gets behind the wheel, drives down the highway & smashes his car head on into on coming traffic, then gets out & starts laughing at the person he has just killed.

I wonder how the alcohol industry would respond to that?
