I need to get a poem for my theatre class. It's one that's supposed to harbor great feelings for the individual. Anyway, I don't know too many poets or too much about specific poetry.
Anyone here have any suggestions for some subtle, intellegent poetry? What are your favorites?

CARPE DIEM = Seize the day

Yep - great poem. Poe was great on the "my loved one was ripped away" theme.
Annabel Lee - Edgar Allen Poe
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.
The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!–that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.
But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.
For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling–my darling–my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Wow, I been considering
"High Flight"
by Gillespie Magee
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high unsurpassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
But I don't know, I still looking for others. This one is a favorite, though.

I think of you every night & day,
I wonder when I will be able to tell you what I need to say.
When the night falls and you are not around,
It takes forever for my mind to settle down.
My life is so complete when you are near,
But I run around ragged without you here.
Always waiting for just the perfect day.
The day that I tell you "my love is true",
The day that I hope you confess the same too.
How is it that this is still so long to come,
My heart wonders just what it is that we are running from.
Spinning away from one another in the dead of night.
Because we could not stand the outrage of anothers fight.
Too many loves in my life have slipped away,
I hope that you will be the one to stay.

One can never creep
when one feels an impulse to soar.
