Is there any advantage to admistering Panadeine Forte rectally and do they have to be crushed to do this? I use them for pain relief.

Thanks

I imagine she is only taking the prescribed dose rectally...

I use Panadeine Forte for chronic middle ear infections.

I have not attempted a rectal dose, however I would imagine you would not crush them up in this case, there is no plastic casing or anything so you should be fine to leave the pill as a whole.

If you do attempt, please let us know whether it was successful or not.

Thanks for the advice. Not sure whether I will try it or not yet.

I was also prescribed suppositories of 100 mg of indomethacin (Indocid) which is a non steroidal anti inflammatory. It helps somewhat with the pain but it is also helping me with depression. Has anyone else experienced this or know why this might be?

Thanks again.

It would be better to crush them, dissolve in a little water and plug with a 3ml or larger syringe though right (without needle of course)?

I would have thought codeine was best taken orally due to it being metabolised into morhpine & C6G. Hence why you don't hear of people snorting or IV'ing it. I could be completely wrong though as there was discussion of plugging in the CWE thread here in AusDD. Personally I'd stick to taking it orally and do a CWE if taking more than a few and was worried about the paracetamol.

Stay safe :)

I've plugged codeine several times, its the best method I've tried, much better then oral IMO. Hits hard and fast and still lasts as long as oral. Opiates work very well rectally.

However, don't just shove the pills up there. Perform a cold-water-extraction to remove the paracetamol using as little water as possible. Draw the remaining liquid into a needleless syringe and squirt it up into your bowels, then await the high.

I only tried plugging codeine because my tolerance to opiates got too high so that no oral dose of codeine would get me satisfied or high. I tried plugging and it actually got me quite high and satisfied. If you have a low opiate tolerance theres probably not much point as it'll work just fine orally. But if your not getting what you want from your codeine, plugging is definitely a superior method.

I'm not certain but I'm pretty sure this happens regardless of the ROA, as long as its absorbed into your bloodstream. I say this because plugging codeine DOES get me 'higher' then taking it orally.

If ur going to plug it then do a CWE then evaporate it then cap it n plug it. Ive been thinking of using this method for a while cos my opiate tolerance is through the roof. Im on a break at the moment but cant wait till its over and feel that bliss once again like the first time:P

yep, as long as it is in your bloodstream it will be metabolised.

sometimes it is in the persons best interest, if theyre using the combination of codeine/apap for pain and have a low tolerance, to use it as it is and not extract the apap. the 2 together - codeine and apap - synergise and generally produce better analgesia.

when were wanting to use doses that contain more than 4g of apap is when we need to do an extraction. you dont necessarily want to rid yourself of all the apap every single time.

Be careful with Indomethacin. Myself and a mate of mine both got prescribed that after 2 separate motorbike crashes. He ended up with ulcers all throughout his stomach and had to be hospitalised, so i immmediately discontinued taking it.

When they say eat before having it, they really mean it.

Thanks for the advice. I don't have a needleless syringe though. Do I just get one from the chemist?

Also with the indomethacin they are suppositories which you insert in rectum. I assume this is to stop the bad effects on the stomach. They are quite helpful though for the pain and kind of brightening the mood.

Also it sounds like I can take up to 4 panadeine forte without it doing liver damage as there is 500 mg of paracetamol per tablet. Is that what you mean by 4g of apap, leftwing?

to plug them all you need is a 5mL oral syringe from a chemist, they cost ~50c. how much are you intending on doing at once though? its recommended not to take more than 2000mg(4 tablets containing 500mg apap) in one dose, and 4000mg(8 tablets containing 500mg apap) over a 24 hour period.

best advice yet. Codeine is a pretty weak painkiller. Considering it's avail over the counter, (only because of 500mg APAP). Still, if you're in serious pain, codeine pills get useless pretty quick unless you get some without the 500mg APAP. But there's much better pain killers doctors will prescribe.

thanks mostly-human. what do you suggest i could persuade my doctor to write on the script for debilitating pain? it only lasts a couple of days usually and i am having it looked into.

I'm not sure, put even something like Tramadol is far better than codeine IMO and does NOT have APAP so you can increase your dose as per pain. I used to take that for migraines.. Much more effective than any codeine + 500MG APAP pill.

Also, atm there's some pain killers laying around here that I occasionally take if I get a migraine, I think some kind of opioid but nothing I'd heard of before - name isn't coming to me - but if I find them I'll post back the name.

But at any rate, I wouldn't really advise going to see a doctor and suggesting the (specific) drugs you want prescribed. I'd just tell him the codeine isn't cutting it and see what he/she suggests.

Disagree :)

The best way to plug is is without a cap. Simply CWE it and plug it using an oral syringe (or evaporate it down to a small concentrated amount of liquid).

It's absorbed rapidly, and you don't have to deal with powder, etc.

This might be a stupid question but would I be better off buying some panadeine 15 over the counter and doing that rather than risk stuffing up my panadeine forte as they are like gold to me given they are prescription only and not sure how many more I can get.

And can any idiot to cwe? I heard I just need some coffee filters.

Thanks

yeah any average joe can perform a CWE without any problems, check out the mega thread in here:)

we cant help you persuade your dr into giving you the meds you need, thats between you and him. initially it can become quite a hassle getting the pain meds you need, but if you play by your doctors rules and jump through all the necessary hoops then youll end up getting the treatment you need. pain meds stronger than tramadol just arent given out in australia, trust me i know;) it took my doctor 3 years to give me something stronger than tramadol for my back.

otherwise youve always got the option of seeing another doctor
