Plugging and the liver

Would rectally administering drugs reduce the stress on your liver to metabolise the drug? I was reading on wiki that a small amount still goes through the liver( 1/3?) but do drugs actually stress your liver out even at prescribed or borderline prescribed doses.

Depends on the dose and the health of your liver and the substance in question. Oxazepam is a benzo that is not extensively metabolized by the liver (basically it is passed out via the kidneys just to clear that up, you end up pissing most of it out) and is given to people with hepatic impairment (end stage hep C + or Ca liver). Diazepam however is extensively metabolized by the liver and should be avoided by patients with this condition even at prescribed dose. These are just two exemples. Maybe investigate the pharmacological properties of the substance you intend plugging and their contraindications ie stuff that they should not be used if the patient has a particular condition. I have used hepatic impairment as an example of a contraindication to valium being prescribed and a green light for oxazepam. Hope this helps.

Any drug that is contraindicated for hepatic impairment means that it will be processed extensively by the liver and people with conditions that cause hepatic impairment should avoid these substances.

Plugging bypasses first-pass metabolism, it doesn't change the fact that a drug is metabolized by the liver, so...no.

just a little confused because it states on the wiki page for rectal administration:

In addition the rectal route bypasses around two thirds of the first-pass metabolism as the rectum's venous drainage is two thirds systemic (middle and inferior rectal vein) and one third portal (superior rectal vein). This means the drug will reach the circulatory system with significantly less alteration and in greater concentrations.[Note 3]

That just means it skips having to be "digested" by your stomach and all....everything like that is still metabolized by the liver! If it is metabolized by the liver it is metabolized 100% the same by the liver no matter what route you take it. What else could metabolize it out of your body?

Drugs are either metabolized by your liver or your kidneys...nothing else. So metabolized means the process in which the drug is broken down, made into a substance that can be utilized by your body and then discarded into waste. So no matter how it goes into your body it still eventually has to be metabolized (by one or the other).
