Y'know, that intergalactic water canine might be on to something. How many of you out there who actually use the search, say on "snoopy" and came back with 6432.5 hits? THEN proceed to open each and every one of those threads? Bandwidth goes out the window.
Now, my momma always told me never come up with problems, come up with solutions. So here's my half-wit attempt at giving one.
Old threads can be categorised into the various topics they are on and stored in the archives. ( yes yes, it's already being done, i know...patience, grasshopper) Now, whoever does a search would just be told if there is such a file on his preferred topic and given the option to d/l the whole compressed lot of threads, to read at his own time.
Chances are, people just want info on these "old news" and would not reply except for the sake of replying. My momma always said, even if you didn't speak, no one would say you're mute.
In the event that someone does want to say something regarding the matter, say to pose a question to some guru who replied in one of the many ancient threads, then he could simply start a new thread pertaining to his query. This new post would then after some time, be added into the file with other similar posts.
To make this even more efficient, perhaps the topic starter could delete his/her own thread. I believe someone already suggested this. Was it you miss apples?
Lastly, i'd like to point out that this would mean a tremendous amount of work for the already overworked moderators so for it to work, it would require us to be incredibly disciplined when it comes to posting.
