Hello,
I have scoured the web for resources to help me and I feel that this is the appropriate spot to look for assistance.

I was in an accident and have been taking hydrocodone 4x 7.5/325 per day for about a year and in that time my tolerance has gone up and the effectiveness of the drug has gone down. I recently have moved my monthly dr appointment up a couple of times to bridge the gap when I run out. I have told the doctor that it is less effective and that I need more and he analyzed my my appointments and told me that he would not accomadate the dosage.
He said that it looks like this is high risk and I need to stay on 4, if I move my appointment for any future dates he will drop me as a patient.

For the past couple of months I have taken 5 per day and then taken less until my appointment. The logic there is, I would rather be in pain for 2 weeks then 4 so it seems a reasonable option. My question/problem is, how should I approach getting bumped up to 5 per day without causing any further concern. I want to stay with my doctor and I don't want to suffer for a 2 week period every month with pain.

The reason I want to stay with my doctor is because I have seen 3 pain doctors in the past year and he has been the only one that has prescribed something that works, the others want to give me epidurals and tens units with arthritis medication, none of which are effective. I don't want to move off of the hydro because they are effective for me and lets face it, the side effects aren't displeasant :).

Sorry for the run on sentences and thanks for your time reading. Any help/guidance would be appreciated.

any help here? I will be out of meds in the next few days and will have to bridge about 4-5 days. Is there anything i can take that is readily available that will help bridge the gap and mask withdrawals?

honestly not otc that will absolutely mask withdrawals. you could order some overnight kratom and try that. I have some on the way for tomorrow morning. You can also get some immodium I recommend the syrup as it gets into your system faster. Immodium is lopermide , and that's a fentanyl derivative but does not cross the blood brain barrier meaning no traditional opiate effects are felt when you take it. however it does still cause the constipation of opiates which is why it is an otc diarreah medicine. I have heard tell that in slightly larger than recommended doses, (say 8 - 10) mg instead of 2. It can mask opiate withdrawal. I took about 15 mg one day and it didn't help much but I suppose everyones different. I really hope you find something useful so that you don't have to suffer withdrawals and the pain that you were taking the meds for in the first place. combined it sounds like some sort of 7th level of hell torture. if you can somehow get a hold of a little valium or xanax it can help a little with sleep.
wish you luck and hope you feel better.
please excuse the out of character misspelling in my post, I am currently on day 2 of withdrawal from a 20 pill a day tramadol habit. the fact that I am even typing and coherent is it's own sort of miracle
Hope you feel better!
peace

This is borderline because we aren't here to tell you how to get more pills from your doctor, but:

You need a new doctor. Any doctor should be well aware of tolerance and cross-tolerance and should accommodate a patient's needs. Instead of shutting you out, he should explain, that by increasing your dosage, you are increasing tolerance, and chance for addiction. If you are okay with that, then I see no reason he can't throw you 1 extra pill per day.

You say 4 doesn't hold you anymore, but 5 does. Eventually, it's going to lead to 5 pills not holding you, but 6 will. You see the vicious cycle you are beginning?

I am not in pain management, but I have family who are, and they all have had their dosages increased when the time has come. However, like i said, please note, by continuing this route, your addiction and tolerance will grow much deeper.

My pain mgt dr is awesome. does injections along with roxicodone. Wont script shit with APAP as it is toxic to your liver. I have to deal with injections, they are not working for me either, but its something I guess I have to deal with to get the medication that does work. I have not found any kind of pain dr that wont try the injections. My dr is so nice and understanding that eventhough I have to do these hellish injections I am willing too do so to keep my treatment.

FM I understand the effects of the dosage increase.

My issue with the pain doc is that he was the only one to perscribe me something that works (opiates) nothing else has helped. My pain doc is a bit of a jerk but I've been to 3 other doctors and none of them prescribe anything that helps, there is a strong sentiment that opiates are bad and you should prescribe everything but opiates amongst doctors in my area. I don't want my doctor to drop me because I seem like a addict, which he has already said to some degree when I told him that I run out early.

I have many medications that have been prescribed to me and I haven't gotten rid of any. I have ambien daily, which rocks, I just need to figure out what works and can get me through the day. Couple others, methocarbamol, flexiril, zanoflex (sp?), a couple diazepam (valium), Gabapentin.
Thanks all, i know this probably isn't the right forum to ask these things but you are all extremely helpful and I know that my motives won't come into question here :).

Also, FM, I understand its borderline, I am pursuing as many avenues as I have available to me. I was just hoping our community would be able to provide additional.

You can always get tramadol overnighted to you. If it works for you, as some people get nothing from it, it will will help to keep wd's from bothering you. When it works for an individual, it REALLY works!

honestly not otc that will absolutely mask withdrawals. you could order some overnight kratom and try that.

BINGO! It's actually a blessing that a lot of people say that kratom is useless but, believe me, it would definitely come in handy for a person in your situation. I can't mention any sources, obviously, but do your research and pick a trustworthy, credible vendor w/ a decent line of products. Regular Bali leaf (powder) will take care of a lot of your w/d symptoms and proper Enhanced Bali might even put a smile on your face.
