What do you guys think? I haven't had a lot of time to play around with it but it seems pretty cool so far. I'll probably end up buying a house to customize eventually. Buy-able items seem pretty cheap in the mall. I think you can buy a summer house for like $5 USD.

What are you paying for? How is it protected or guaranteed to be yours? Do you get insurance?

You're paying for a large personal space that you can customize by buying stuff to put in it. It's protected because you're the only one that can access it unless you invite people in, and yes, it's insured. If it were to disappear they'd just restore it's backup from their servers.

It's released? I haven't played my PS3 in a couple days so I must have missed it and I'm about to get on a plane. What can you do in it? Is there any cyber sex?

So far it seems pretty small. it's only Beta, official version to be released soon. There's your personal space(apartment), a movie theater you can see new movies in, a mall to buy clothes, furniture, or a house, and another store I can't remember. There's also a bowling alley and 4 game locations you can travel to. 2 from Far Cry and 2 from the new Uncharted game.

There's chess in the mall and bowling/arcades/billiards in the bowling alley. No cyber sex that I know of, but I don't own a bed yet so who knows. =D

i've started the mall download twice and the bitch never seems to finish. i'm not going to be putting any real money in that, that's absurd.

bring back the good old days of virtual worlds where there is an infinite landscape to claim. you just need to find some space no one else has claimed and start building. there were shit floating all over the joint as well as heaps of hidden underground porn rooms and shit. it was mad fun back inthe 90's.

it's just a social network/chat room set in a 3d environment. it's not a game.

Exactly. Glorified chatroom, or even MUSH (and I am really stretching things here).

late edit: The people who hang out on this Home thing are going to be morons anyway. Why would you bother?

another small gripe: with all the complex customisation of the character, my wii mii looks far more like me than this thing could ever manage.

Why play games online at all? It's just a neater platform to find people to play with and launch online multi from.

^really? are there areas for people to hang out in in order to play certain games? How can one identify who has what game and who wants to play what outside talking to each person?

i would've thought just entering the game would do better for finding players.

I'm really lost with this whole thread. Uhh, someone care to explain?

On the PS3 there is a software called "Playstation Home" in which you design you own character/avatar to walk around a common environment to see whoever is in the area. I haven't gotten into it much so i can't say much more than that.

Yet another step towards social seclusion of the masses.

The last thing a lot of these gamers need is a reason to stay indoors.

You wanna make friends? Go to a bar and start talking to people.

spending real money on things like this is almost as absurd as spending it on ringtones

Sounds like an interesting idea. Honestly, we are already a generation filled with texting, e-mail, and seclusion wrapped around us. I don't think this will really add to it. Sounds like a fun idea.

Would I replace it with actually going out on the weekend? No. But, could be something to fuck around with. I don't understand how one is suppose to spend money, though? You actually buy land, shop, etc. with real money?

You can if you want, but you don't have to. You can spend the 49 cents or whatever for new clothes or just wear the free preset options. Same with the houses and furniture.

hahaahah, new clothes. That's a good one.

wait, they seriously offer that? :\
