Even though im not interested in console gaming, i thought this might be of interest to some!

Following its annual earnings report this morning, Sony has confirmed it is working on a successor to the PlayStation 3. In a post-report conference call, Sony executive vice president and chief financial officer Masaru Kato was queried about an increase in research and development costs for the company.

When asked what the "major driver" of R&D costs was, Kato said--via a translator--that one was "prototype research work, development work during the current fiscal year in [the] game segment."

now days its like the coming out of new consoles it compared to the olympics, every 4 or so years a new thing will come out, eh maybe shorter.. but u get my drift.

sounds cool, don't know what more they can add besides better graphics, and even more user friendly. oh and make it look really cool under your tv(or where ever u put ur console).

eh, i'll just wait for xbox's new thing, which i've only heard rumors.. but i hear microsoft is coming out with something new.. a employee from the local "replays" told me this. like better games? or something.

yeah the generation we live in is more on the go, and wants something simple. thats why smart phones are such a big fucking thing now days.

there is a playststion smartphone coming out. the "sony xperia play". looks pretty cool :

I've read some into it, it's going to be like the "PSP", which means a new kingdom hearts game ;)!
The Xperia Play by Sony Ericsson was first announced in Barcelona during the Mobile World Congress. Now, the phone/gaming device is officially confirmed to hit US markets on May 26.
^source.

after that shit with the playstation network what makes u think the same thing wont happen with the phone, because i'm sure it's tied into the psn some way or another.

What makes you think that type of thing won't happen to anything?

I'm not sure about that phone because I don't know if it's 4g or not. I just can't rationalize paying 300+ for a last gen device but, like I said I don't know.

Eh I'd probably agree if we were talking about apple. Aside from PS3 versus 360 Sony has a pretty good record in winning technology wars. Blu-ray probably being their latest win. The only problem I have with Sony is their pricing which is why I didn't get a PS3 until they released the latest version for 300 bucks. I must say that my 360s have been collecting dust since that purchase.

4 red rings of death later I think I'll take PSN's free service being down for 4 weeks and I'll definitely be looking at more than the price tag on my next gen console purchse. Now that Halo has lost it's charm (for me anyway) M$ is pretty well going to have to pull a miracle out of their ass to get me back on board.

yeah, i may be done with xbox myself soon. playstation net was down for a month. ive had to deal with red rings multiple times which was total console downtime, not to mention buy a brand new xbox. M$ can go to hell as far as im concerned.

and as far as sony being a stupid tax, i kinda agree. i will never buy sony (video game consoles is a separate category for me, because i say so.) but, i wont hate on their products. i was given a sony digicam years ago and it has never let me down. their televisions look amazing, and as far as i know their shit never breaks.

UMD? minidisc? memorysticks? psp? All around shitty hardware-- poor value, prone to failure (televisions, speakers, laptops, cameras)

Blueray isn't really a hit, its pretty much the last physical format for movies and games anybody is ever going to use. That's kind of like being the last dinosaur to die, IMO.

That's fair. if xbox has an absurd failure rate, and it does, a ps3 makes sense. I sat out this generation (happily), but I'm still a spectator ;)

Ride the PC train to victory, my man.

+1

Yeah im happy to stick with PC gaming, i pulled out of the console market back in 1999, the Dreamcast was the last console i owned.. but my taste in games also shifted more towards MMO's and RPG/RTS's so i guess it was a natural progression, that and i use my PC for virtually everything so its convenient, coupled with steams digital purchasing system.

The only downside is, some games are released exclusively for consoles before their released to PC in an attempt to combat piracy, which sucks.. but i can understand there decision for doing so.

Fair enough with the hardware examples but, TVs, speakers and cameras? I can see laptops maybe but, I had a VAIO desktop that lasted for 6 years before I bounced it.

What I meant was historically Sony has led the way failure included. From the walkman to the CD player to the world's first CD based gaming console which brings us to date. Blu-ray isn't a hit you're right but, at 15gigs for a HD format movie I think I'll just play it off a disc for now. The prices do suck but, most anything you buy now that will last a good while will cost ya.

GRATZ! theyve been making Diablo 3 for 10-15 years(they hired the same orchestra to make the music as soon as Diablo 2 came out) and still not released. Untill that day i shall lurk in the shadows 8( ...

panasonic 3DO is first, iirc.

Trinitron sets from the mid 80s were world-class, but eventually sony realized that if they cut corners during production, they could sell people more tv sets when they broke.

Oh ya I forgot about the 3d0. Ha remember that. Anyways as far as consoles go I skipped the PS3 for a 360 because of cost. Since I got a PS3 I definitely see it as heads and tales above the 360. As I said next time around I'll be more liikely to get a Sony console than a M$.

lol, when the ps3 was in development, there was big talk about how it was so powerful that they might NEVER have to release a ps4.

big talk.

You don't ever have to update hardware. :P Personally I'm quite alright with the technology of the current generation, and wouldn't mind it if my 360 marked the absolute upper limit of progress!

Just out of curiosity, what about the PS3 strikes you as a higher caliber? The titles that are being developed for it, or the intrinsic graphical capability itself?

I really like the titles. MGS, Heavy Rain, the Uncharted series and the latest God of War wasn't bad either to name a few.

One of the first things I noticed that I really liked was how quiet it was compared to any of my 360s. Those things are obnoxious, although I'm not sure about the new ones. The included wireless is great too as it automatically connects to my PC. The torrent program I use pops right up with no bullshit and I can easily stream or copy movies right to it. Although the browser kinda sucks I can stream video to it and have watched plenty of streaming anime and shit right on my TV. I have had it for probably two years and my original controller still functions like it's brand new unlike the 360 controllers which admittedly I like better design wise but, they just don't last. The PS3 controllers come rechargeable as opposed to M$ lovely AA batteries.

Not only does it have 98% of the same games as 360 it has alot better exclusive titles. Does the 360 have any outside of Halo? I mean no bullshit man I was a 360 guy through and through but, since I got a PS3 I let my XBL expire and can't even remember the last time I turned a 360 on. I also don't believe that Xbox live is superior in any way. I think both services work just fine if not the PS3 a little better but, what's great to me is that IMO I run into alot less 12 year olds screaming through their mic while playing COD or something. The whole look of the PS3's interface seems alot more mature as well, an example being that shit isn't toxic green and I don't have to have a ridiculous avatar either. Simple shit is nice too like the fact that I can set my own background pic downloaded right from the browser and I'm not forced to pay for it. Buying downloads with real money instead of M$ points is sweet too because I never have to spend more than something costs for no reason.

Graphically I do think it is better in some stuff but, that's just a bonus. In the end they both do what they're supposed to but, IMO the PS3 is just plain better and there's no services to buy and everything you need in already there. When they first came out at 600 or whatever it was I just got a 360 like many other but, now at their current price it's a much better buy.

^ Yeah, I definitely agree -- a lot more quality exclusive titles on the PS3 side of things.

I almost regret going for the 360 about a week ago, but my sister and I are both enjoying the hell out of Halo on co-op, so I can't really complain. %)

a ps4, jeez back in the day a new console will only be warranted when the existing system has been maxed of its capacity. i really doubt that to be the case with ps3.

this is just a money grab methinks.
