Playstation 3

I can't believe bluelight is reccomending ps3s.


Essentially the entire ps3 has been one dragged out and expensive disappointment. The system itself is difficult to develop for, the games the ps3 currently offers are nothing more than mediocre, and there isn't really anything exciting on the horizon either (except mgs4 i suppose).

Now that sony has dropped the price on their foreman grill it becomes a much better deal, but for the layman I believe you're better off investing in a 360 or a Wii.



I personally am a PC gamer. i'm an enthusiast, so I view anything short of building my own 1337 machince a simple commmidty for the casual gamer. PCs offer flexibility that consoles can't even hold a candle to. But for the average person a console is the most simple and economical way to play games.

So anyways, unless sony pulls a miracle out of its ass i'd go with a 360

Very limited backwards compatability in europe, they (for whatever reason) removed the all emotion chip in European ps3's, and to add insult to injury, charge more than our american counterparts.

Anyone who owns one of these needs to download everyday shooter. My god. So fun, amazing visuals, cool soundtrack. It's worth 10 bucks, trust me. Addictive too.

Ahem.. PS3 vs 360. Up until reading this thread I didn't even know there were discrepencies. I mean, in the gaming world....360 won. Hands down. And the Wii smashed them both to pieces.

Basically.....You can no longer get the 60GB Backwards compatible version of the PS3 (In australia anyway), there are no rumble features yet, the game selection is medicore at best, and the good games, are on 360 too, and they run better, have better online capabilities, and more people to play them with.

At this point in time, there is no debate, a 360 is by far and wide the better option of the two, down the track, this may not be the case, but right now, PS3 is a money sink.
 
A money sink? I have loads of fun with mine, and all the pc streamin capabilities make it an awesome media center. Get out.

Oh yeah, the coolest thing. The controllers can be charged, instead of constantly buying new batteries. Awesome. And, I don't have to worry about my expensive ass game system breaking on me a month after I bought it. The more I think about it, the more I hate microsoft. What a bunch of sceezy scumbags. All they care about is their profit.

I highly recommend to anyone with a ps3 to get the downloadable game called Everyday Shooter. Awesome addictive gameplay, trippy graphics, and the best part is the soundtrack. As you shoot, you add a little bit to the music. Very fun. Worth ten bucks.
 
If your stricken for cash, wait to buy PS3 at least one more price drop. Metal Gear Solid 4 is not out yet (releasing in Quarter 2 of US) and Grand Theft Auto (Feb-April release) and watch out for other huge titles. These titles will boost sales and a following lowering of price of the system will be in order, perhaps not soon, but as of now PS3 doesn't seem to have a large enough library to support its own financing conditions.
 
I just found out I can plug my mouse and keyboard into my ps3, and just like that have what basically functions as a computer. Here I am posting from my ps3. It's pretty fuckin cool novelty. I wonder if I can play games using the mouse and keyboard.
 
pixel junk monsters is an addicting game in the same trend as those tower defense games. Fun, and I've played it for about an hour and only completed 2 levels. Hard.

To be honest, I didn't see this one coming. Certainly not in the opening month of the year and after the holiday rush. But here it is anyway, courtesy of the NPD, whose numbers are some of the most reliable in the industry. So I'll just cut to the chase and give you those January 2008 numbers:

274k - Wii
269k - PlayStation 3
251k - Nintendo DS
230k - PlayStation Portable
230k - Xbox 360

Can you believe it? I wonder if Sony CEO Jack Tretton can, or if there's not at least a little eye-rubbing and arm-pinching going on. Whatever the case, here's his ebullient reaction to the news:

Coming off a great holiday sales season we see strong momentum behind PS3 in 2008, and feel confident about the year ahead. We have an exceptionally diverse lineup of exclusive games, from Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Resistance 2 to more mainstream games such as LittleBigPlanet and SingStar. Beyond that, we have Blu-ray emerging as the de facto high def standard, the developer community is hitting their stride, consumers are recognizing the tremendous value and innovative services such as PlayStation Home are all in the works, so this is definitely shaping up to be a breakthrough year for us.

Yeah, I know, it sounds exactly like what he said a year ago when everything was in the toilet. These things have a way of playing like top 40 songs after awhile, so file it skeptically under "wait and see," and then we certainly will as everyone deploys their next rounds of salvos.

More on the rest of the numbers later, but given the fact that only one piece of PS3 software even charted (Call of Duty 4, which was #8) I'm guessing a substantial portion of the PS3's sales uptick was Blu-ray related.
 
I bought a PS3 just for the Blu-Ray function; at $399 it's only slighter more expensive than the cheapest dedicated Blu-Ray players. I think as Blu-Ray gets an increased share in the hi-def market you'll see this trend continue. Looks like that gamble is paying off for Sony.

My one and only quarm with my PS3 is that you can't play music whilst playing a game. If they manage to include that with a software update then happy days.

I have the 60GB version but the backwards compatability is completely shite unless you use a shitty little TV.

Definitely. I don't see HD DVD going anywhere anytime soon. The future is Blue-ray(which is part of the reason I chose PS3).

Yeah if you're buying a gaming system just for its high def movie player, something is wrong. Funny how the PS3 has been out forever and yet still so many DISSAPOINTING games. I bought a PS3 instead of a Wii this christmas, and honestly i feel like i threw four hundred dollars in the garbage can. I still play my 360
all the time and unfortunately, the PS3 just sits there. With blu ray movies being almost thirty dollars, i dont see the value. I am still buying DVD's just to dave a buck or two and playing them in Upconversion 1080i resolution on my 360. Ive played Resistance, I've played Ratchet and Clank, and im probably going to waste my money on MGS4. None of those games can hold a candle to such blockbusters as Bioshock, Gears Of War, Mass Effect, Halo 3. With Too Human and Gears of War 2 on the horizon, i doubt my PS3 will get ANY use this year. I think the only game that i'll enjoy on this POS system is Gran Turismo HD if it ever comes out.
 
I wonder if the 360's lagging sales has to do with people being scared of the Red Ring of Death.
 
Probably. I wouldn't spend money on something that's been known to break.

I think 2008 looks great for PS3 games. Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Haze, inFamous, Killzone 2, Red Dead Revolver 2, and SOCOM Confrontation all look like they're going to be good.
 
Whats funny about the red ring of death situation is microsoft will replace your 360 for FREE for up to three years. I had three playstation 2s in my time, and all three got the infamous "Disc Read Error", and sony wouldnty do a thing about it. At least Microsoft is standing behind there product and keeping consumers happy. By the way, did you know that for every 360 sold so far, each gamer has bought sumthing along the lines of 6-7 games? Cha ching for developers!!! Has PS3 had a multi million seller yet? Or do their games even chart? If i was a developer i would be scared spending all that money on a blu ray game, and not being able to even make money on it. In these days of extreme production costs in gaming, if a game cant sell X amount of copys, they lose money......
