Plans for Spring??

Okay, so it's officially 2 hours into our new season, the glorious Spring. For the last 10 years or so even the word has conjured up amazing images, given me a squirt of that feeling of passion and even a bit of stress. (Stress because Spring means silly season for someone working in the Nursery Industry).

What are your plans for this Spring? Are you going to grow some Basil and other herbs for you cooking purposes? Looking forward to seeing your lawn start to grow again? Or do you HATE Spring? (I don't know how anyone could, unless they are a heartless monster)

Any late trips up to the snow? Wildflowers in WA? Tell us all about it :)
 
So far my list includes:

Basil, Coriander, Sage, Italian Parsley (already bought punnets and going to put them in soon). I'm going to make fresh Pesto with the Basil, saltimbocca with the Sage, stir fry some coriander into a fried rice and generally experiment with the flat leaf parsley, haven't used it much.

Looking forward to planting out more shrubby things in my regen project out the front, I'm going to go to a mates nursery soon and buy a tray of unusual things. I've got Elk Horns to put in the trees out there, Birds nest ferns and I'm going to find some more ferns for there too.

Hopefully I'm going to grow a decent crop of Roma tomatoes to make some Passata to save over the year. Haven't decided if I'm going to buy hybrids or find a good hairloom variety.


And, I'm going to grow a few sunflowers :)
 
Spring has well and truly sprung here. We didn't get much of a Winter this year and for the past few weeks temperatures have been hitting the mid 20's.

I have already lowered the blades on my mower last week and with a forecast of decent rain this weekend I plan on fertilising the lawn on Friday before I head off to the European Autumn for a few weeks. I expect the garden to be alive when I return.

I planted my lemon tree that was in a pot a few months ago and it's already blooming and forming little lemons. It's a Lots-a-lemon variety which usually yields at least 30 full size lemons each harvest. I'm interested to see how many I'll get this year.

When I get back I'll start planting the vegie patch. Mostly salad greens and bok choy initially and then some water melons for late summer harvest. I was impressed with the last lot that I grew. I am inspired to plant some sunflowers now for the kids, might do that this weekend.
 
Well, this is the first spring we will have had a garden with stuff growing for over a decade \o/

At moment we're (well me, I'm the one who planted everything and lovingly turned the soil with new 'stuff' to make it great for gardening heh) growing carrots, various lettuce, silverbeet, peas, parsley, garlic and possibly other stuff my pain infested brain can't remember at present.

Not sure what we/I will throw in soon, might check out what you said klue later (we're off today to see the fishes who were in brissy and in tassie, well in melbourne for the week!) when we get back and buy seeds tomorrow!

Also looking forward to riding my motorbike lots of course :D And Cassies first bday which she will have early october!
 
That's what I have been arguing all day. This whole "Spring on the 1st" bullshit is somehow slipped into mass media and it is really itching my goat. Doesn't really matter in Queensland because we only get 2 seasons anyway.

I look forward to not having to take a jacket everywhere, when it heats up. When I was in high school during Spring I'd see all the cute new lambs bouncing around from the bus on the way to school.
 
^ Definitely. We've had a couple of glorious days here in Melbourne, and i look forward to more. As the next seasons move towards us, i'm gearing up for the beach, camping, bbqs and fire-pits :D I'm also really excited to explore more of Victoria... ROADTRIPS!
 
Hmm Spring.

Just hoping not planning that the weather gets better and will inspire to leave the house on my days off.

Moving from WA to Vic in the middle of winter is not something I want to do again. Especially as I havent really had a winter for four years as was in northern WA for the last three winters.

Might actually do something in my yard but do like the low maintainance style of yard.

But with better weather cant wait to get away camping and fishing.

Spring is huge i the Bonsai community for the obvious reason. Last weekend we held our annual Sydney Bonsai Society show and all of our members trees are already starting to come along better than ever.

For me all my Black Pines had a very tough winter and they need to some serious tlc to get back to strength. My Chinese Elms on the other hand have flourished. The new growth has spread all over and its a striking bright green which contrasts well with the colour of the trunk and branches.

Maples will need a little more warmth to come good but already buds are starting to make them selves present. I'm looking forward to some good growth from these also, especially the trident maples I have been collecting - In a few years they will be used in a huge 13 or 15 piece forest setting, the biggest I have ever attempted.

^ That's awesome mate, I didn't realize you were so into Bonsai. Post up some pics! :)

Got all the herbs I bought in, and turned the compost today. I'm designing a couple of trellises for my cucumbers at the moment. Founds a 5 meter roll of Galvanized pig wire at a garage sale and got it for a steal... I bought my dad a Diggers Seeds book and we are trying a few of the companion planting suggestions so I am going to intersperse Zucchini with them. Also going to somehow find room for a couple of pumpkin vines. I'm hoping they do well because they store so easily and I could have fresh pumpkin for 6 months or more!

I bought a dozen bails of feed to use as mulch last week, Sataria and Sugar Cane... So I'm set for mulch for the veggie garden. And I have organised a truck load of leaf and woodchip from my mates work (tree services/ removal etc) for a carton of beer, hopefully that will turn up this week. I'll be able to do all my trees out the front and an area where I am planing natives out the back :)
 
I had a very nice native (Syzgium) rainforest tree bonzai that my sister bought me for my birthday one year. I went away for 3 weeks and forgot to tell someone to water it. When I returned I told it that it that if it didn't pull through I'd burn it. It resprouted leaves along one branch and was going strong but then I forgot to water it again for a week or so and it died. So I covered it in lighter fluid and immolated it.

Stupid plant.
