how long, and how often do you have to do heroin to become physically addicted? i mean i know it doesnt come on instantly but when does it start and when does the shit hit the fan?

At exactly 4 days, 8 hours, 31 minutes and 10 seconds after your first dose....
think about it dude.... It will differ from person to person, but you knew that already right?

Entirely depends on dose, frequency of use and the person. If used daily, probably around a month. Give or take a few days. In some situations it may take more than 2 months.
I believe it took me somewhere near 3 months until the withdrawals got so bad I wanted to keep using to not be sick.

If I use once or twice daily, I'll start to get noticeable withdrawal after about a week of constant use.

yep.
after two weeks of constant use (3 times a day) it gets very uncomfortable. i cant imagine what it would be like after 5 months for example .

A bit off topic... it took me 4 weeks of daily use to experience my first withdrawal. This was when I was up too approximately 100mg a day.
The previous night I tossed and turned. Got no sleep. Thought I was getting the flu. Then TripDoc suggested that I was WDing. And you guessed it! As soon as I found some opiates, WHAM! ... cured.
A couple years ago when I was into weed, and later on when I regularly used E, I always got sick. Mostly respitory infections and coughs that would persist for sometimes months... BUT as soon as I began to use opiates, I've had an almost perfect bill of health. Except when I run out.
If given a limitless supply of your favorite opiates, who here would be totally satisfied with being a lifelong addict. You can count me in. "Better Living Though Chemistry"

Who cares how long it takes to get *physical* withdrawal. This is neither the most difficult, nor most unpleasant aspect of heroin withdrawal. Some people might focus on it because it is associated with the psychological withdrawal but physical withdrawal is almost always small potatoes compared to mental (cept alcohol and the barbs).

I would say that if you use at least twice daily for about 2-3 weeks. After that time is when you notice your tolerance building up & you crave to use it more...

I was very comfortable being a weekend Percocet addict and being able to get high off just 20mgs of oxycodone. I was totally functional.
However a full-blown heroin addiction is different. It really starts to effect your thought processing and moods after a while. I've really cut back on my use in the past two months where I'm on a few days and then off more days than I'm on. I'm really trying to stop completely, though. I really don't like how it effects my moods and it's really started to interfere with my functioning. Not to mention that it doesn't really give me any euphoria anymore. I still get the rush, but afterwards I don't really feel high anymore. I either just feel normal or I'm passing out for hours at a time. It's just not fun anymore.
I would rather be clean than have a lifetime supply of opiates. It's fun the first couple of months, but I don't think it's worth it after that. Instead I'd rather do six months on, six months off.
It takes along time to get phisically addicted. I say about a year of constant regular use!
You must have been using some really weak stuff. I've been on for 11 months now and I was full-blown addicted to the point I'd get so sick I wanted to die by about 5 months.

I wouldn't go as far as calling the physical addiction small potatoes compared to psychological addiction. I'm not suppossed to use drugs period anymore, as far as my girlfriend is concerned. She doesn't know (although she certainly suspects) that I'm using heroin anymore. Last night it hadn't even been 24 hours since my last use and I couldn't even sit still with her on the couch because I was getting sick.

most docs say it takes 5-7 days of daily usage of narcotics to develop tolerance/withdrawals...I AGREE...
i dont agree with living ones life as an addict as being such a good thing..your tolerance would be so fucking high, and yeah i know you could take more and more, but shit man theres more to life than popping/shooting/snorting drugs...i love OPIATES as much as the next man, but every addict i know lives/breathes/embraces his/her drug to no end and they usually dont not much of a life...they sit around the fucking house all day high....their health USUALLY does slowly deteriate as they dont exercise, dont eat right etc etc...i know there are exceptions to every rule, but...

I am very curious about how it affects your thoughts soviet? Do you find yourself feeling mentally slow? What kind of effects do you get?
This seems to be at odds with the medical reports which report cognitive decline generally only when dosage is increased (i.e. when you increase the dosage people get fucked up and dont do so well on tests but after awhile they adjust to this dosage).
Do you find this to be true when you are just maintence dosing...or only when you are shooting enough regularly to get high?
Yes both you and PhreeX are right physical addiction can be tough, but it isn't the thing which stops people from quiting. If you are psychologically addicted after a month who cares physical withdrawal doesn't kick in yet because you are addicted so will get in eventually.
