I've been requested not to post to the other PhreeX thread and had most of my posts removed, so... I'll start another one. If this will offend you, you're welcome to not read it and go back to sticking your head in a nice bucket of sand.
I think this recent incident with PhreeX and the subsequent reaction to my posts are illustrative of a disturbing and all too common theme in drug forums on the net, particular ones like Other Drugs on here and the Shroomery where high risk things like opiates and benzodiazepines are dominant topics of discussion. I've watched the same pattern over and over, it basically goes like:
1: "Soandso has overdosed after taking 50 Oxycontins."
2: "Gosh I can't believe it! Soandso knew so much about drugs!"
3: "Soandso is my hero, I'm in shock, he knew so much about drugs!"
4: "Golly how did this happen? Soandso knew so much about drugs!"
5: "Uhh, Soandso took 50 Oxycontins. That was pretty dangerous and stupid. How can you guys be praising his drug knowledge?"
6: Zillions of idiots attack poster of number 5.
7: Wait a few weeks, go back to number 1, start over with a new idiot overdosing and ending up dead or comatose.
Its sad when someone ends up in the hospital or grave because of any reason, drug related or not. However, that doesn't make them a hero, nor should it make them immune from criticism. I'm particularly bothered by the gang mentality aspect of it... "How dare you criticize this person now!" Half the time, the people ranting about how tragic the situation is and singing the praises of the person who's dead/sick are people who flamed that person when they were healthy. Fake respect, yeah, how touching.
The MOST disturbing aspect of this Ripper-PhreeX syndrome however is the praising of the person's drug knowledge. It sucks that they overdosed, but come on... they OVERDOSED. They aren't people you want to emulate. In the case of Ripper, he didn't know shit about drugs. PhreeX knew quite a bit, but didn't act based on his knowledge... knowledge is of little use if you don't base your actions on it.
There seems to be an enormous unwillingness to learn from the mistakes of others in this "community"... When someone overdoses, anybody who even dares mention that the person brought it on themselves is attacked.
I've never done anything (so far) to land myself in a coma or grave, but I've certainly done some stupid shit with drugs. I wrote up my experiences and posted them to the internet, hoping that people would learn from them and not repeat my mistakes. Apparantly, that was a waste of my time, as I have on several occasions had people tell me, in essence "Well you did this stupid thing so how dare you tell me I shouldn't try the same thing!" What the fuck?!?! Someone writes up a report saying "This was a huge mistake and I think I was in serious danger" and your reaction is "Gee, I should try that" rather than "OK glad someone else learned that so I know not to try it." I can't even begin to comprehend this mentality.
Drugs are fucking dangerous... even when you use them as responsibly as possible, there's plenty of opportunities for accidents, mistakes, impure material, etc. When you refuse to learn from your mistakes and the mistakes of others, that's irresponsible as hell. Irresponsibility is a great way to increase your death/injury chances.
If someone dies or goes to the hospital because of a drug overdose, that is a tragedy. When people refuse to learn from the incident and actively praise the person's drug knowledge and viciously attack anybody who doesn't follow the herd, that is just as much of a tragedy. This is only March 9, and so far this year there's already been two deaths (one possibly not drug related, too early to tell) and one near death. I would think that this would have people seriously questioning what kind of behaviors and attitudes led to this... instead, I'm mostly seeing a pack mentality that proclaims it a social sin to mention the deaths in any way other than to sing the praises of the victim.
I think this is a crisis situation, and it disturbs the hell out of me that any real discussion of the problem is being stifled in the name of "respect" and "sensitivity."
If you people really gave a fuck about respect, you'd respect the people out there who are engaging in reckless behavior and are having the online drug community essentially tell them that its OK. If you really cared about people, you'd be more concerned with preventing future tragedies by discussing these incidents bluntly and honestly rather than squelching discussion out of some misguided (and often false) respect for these overdose cases. If you want to praise people like PhreeX and Ripper, great. Praise their other good qualities. Don't sing false praises about what god-like drug experts and role-models they were.
In the case of PhreeX... he's long posted some pretty outrageous shit, for example his claim of having IV injected a megadose of DOM (as well as other psychedelics), not to mention pretty heavy abuse of shit like fentanyl.

Right on. Looking back at Phreex's posts we see a litany of "I live for drugs" and "do more" and "shoot up or you're a wuss." Those three attitudes combined lead to (guess what!) death. Sure, it's sad he died and he had some good things to say but hopefully his death will put a touch of reality into everyones' lives and (maybe) they'll realize that a speedball a day does not keep the doctor away. Salud!

Um... he's not dead.
Also Murple I really don't want to get involved in this drama, but this may have been a suicide attempt. He may very well have known what he was doing.

He's not dead yet, and with luck, he will survive and learn from this. PhreeX seems more like an intelligent person with a reckless attitude rather than an ignorant git like Ripper was. PhreeX's problem wasn't being uneducated but rather that he seemed to think he was invincible... the quotes you gave seem to indicate that.
If this was a suicide attempt... well, that doesn't really change much regarding my point. My issue here has more to do with the "community" than with PhreeX himself. PhreeX has a long career of posting irresponsible and reckless shit and encouraging the same. If this latest incident was a suicide attempt, that doesn't change things he's said in the past nor does it change the way that the "community" has responded. Those are the real problems I'm trying to address, not the details of PhreeX's current situation.

drugs ARE and ALWAYS are dangerous and a risk is always involved. even when u pop a simple pill u put ur life at risk.it doesnt matter how responsible you are...OR...how much knowledge you have on drugs. EVERY DRUG U TAKE IS DIFFERENTur mental state can alter the affects of what u take, and its consequences.your physical state can also alter the affects.
when something like this incident happens and it hits close to home like it obviously has done it makes you sit up and pay attention.even if a person has a repeat episode in overdosing...that should alert your attention to the fact that..hey hes my friend...i had better keep an eye on him.
no one knew this was going to happen,no one can explain either or justify it. lets just hope that people learn from mistakes or situations like this and can recognise when some one needs help or when someone is crying out. before it gets to late.
you could be a bible on drugs...but you can never predict what will happen.
murple:i dont know you and dont know the reasons behind what you say and why you say it. EVERYONE is entitled to voice their say in bluelight. as long as it is within the forum guidelines. they are available for you read if so be it. such things as resulting in flaming other bluelighters, having personal vandettas against others through threads or not conforming to forum guidelines will result in the proper consequences...ie warnings and stuff...the subject at hand (PhreeX) is a touchy subject and it has hit close to home.you are entitled to say what you have to say but please do so with at least some respect and consideration to the people mosty effected :)
NOTE: i do agree how ever that behaviour that encourages the miss use or bad behaviour of drugs in bluelight shouldnt be tolerated at all...if this is indeed the case then the appropriate measures should be taken to avoid this :)

ok, phreex isn't my fucking hero, i don't idolize his or anyone's use of drugs. i use the way i do, others do the same. i didn't post out of some misguided sense of hero worship or "respect" for him as a role model. i posted b/c he was my friend. yes he brought it on himself, as in he injected himself with the drug. we all know that, thanks for pointing it out. i doubt anyone doesn't know that. so what was the point of posting? your post was not wanted in the other thread b/c it was uncalled for. that was simply a thread for people to express there sadness, hope, and prayers for a man many of us like (both in person and online). i do respect his knowledge of drugs, and i am pissed the fuck off that he would do something like this, accidental or intentional. what does that make me?
you want to start a topic like this, fine. you do have some valid points to make. fact is we all know what he did was dumb. and i bet when (not if, when) he wakes up, he will say the same.

Unfortunately, many people out there DON'T realize what he did was dumb. The same thing happened on the Shroomery with Ripper. There's plenty of idiots on the net, and many people will look at situations like these and not see any connection between these incidents and their own behaviors... "It'll never happen to me, I know lots about drugs" and the related "What happened to ___ had to be a mistake or something because he/she knew so much about drugs." This gets reinforced by stuff like the 300+ replies to the PhreeX thread, many of which say in essence "He knew so much about drugs."
Drugs are dangerous. They can be very beneficial, and responsible attitudes and education can drastically reduce the dangers... but they remain dangerous. We aren't helping anybody if we aren't willing to openly and bluntly dissect what happened with Ripper and PhreeX, even if that hurts some people's feelings. I'd rather hurt a few people's feelings now than see more people's feelings hurt down the road when more people overdose because they were trying to emulate these people who "knew so much about drugs."

Extremely well-written, but poorly timed and placed. It strikes a cord because it's the sad truth, but it's not the truth that some of the people (guests) here want or need to hear at this point in the crisis. Tact is the name of the game when we're talking about a heart-broken and desperate family.

very well said Murple. . . you make several interesting and thought provoking points. On a recent post i saw his sister pop on and basically flame every bluelighter, she has a right to be angry, and she also made good points. Honestly i see BL as a place to ask questions and to share similar expierences. . . . not to look to those who take things over the edge and too far and praise them or to try to immitate them. Look, drugs are bad in general. . . those who die because of their own need to push the line, or even to just simply die, are still people, but in no way should they become a hero in their death. BL is a place to gain knowledge on how not to die from doing the stupid things we all engage in, and is a place to ask questions to be a lil safer, and above all else, BL should be a place to learn from others mistakes.

Murple that was well written and couldn't be more true!
We all know drugs are dangerous! We all know what they can do (some of us don't i guess).
I had written to Phreex once about shooting up coz i was interested... he does seem to be very knowledgable about drugs. But as Murple said you must put that knowledge into action.
If this was/is a suicide attempt...... well i don't know what to say. :(

I don't know much about this topic. I'm not a member of shroomery and haven't really witnessed this "syndrome" you talk about so I may be totally wrong.
But is it possible that you may just be getting mixed up in the social semantics of all these posts? I mean I think we can both agree that most people see Soandso's death as a lesson learned, and if we don't agree on that point then well there's the problem. But anyways, assuming most people see Soandso's death as a lesson learned, then the only thing that seperates the poster who mourns and the poster who criticizes is a social thing of manners and ethics is it not?
I guess I just have a common good faith in the fact that most people have learned from this guy's mistake. Whether or not they decide to praise him or mourn him or criticize him really does not change the fact that the person can digest the whole situation and come to the conclusion most of us would: damn that was stupid.
I don't know, I guess the point where our opinions differ on this whole thing is that regardless of if a person praises the drug knowledge of someone who overdosed or not, they still are able to see that it was really really stupid and they will learn from it. You may agree with me, I don't know, and now I don't know where this post is going so I'm just going to stop.
Adios.

I think now is actually the BEST time to discuss this... precisely because it is fresh on everyone's mind, and because people are hurting. Its much easier to ignore these painful issues after the wounds have had time to heal. Its not a question of tact, its a question of using a glaring and painful example to hammer in a point which otherwise would go ignored by many of the people most in need of hearing it.
As for PhreeX's sister... I don't think she was flaming people. Angry, yes, but the truth is I agree with her on most points about PhreeX and his supporters. The only point I disagree with her is her belief that drugs are inherently bad and the root cause of these problems. Drugs aren't the problem, the people using them stupidly are. Drugs are ALWAYS dangerous, but so are cars, airplanes, knives, parachutes... things which can be enormously beneficial when used responsibly (though accidents can still happen).
The question at hand now is simple... what do we do? This and other forums often get called a "community" - but is that true? If it is, we need to find a way to change these attitudes. I really don't know what to do, which is why I've started this thread. I'm hoping we can be the community we pretend we are and actually come up with some solutions to this Ripper-Phreex Response Syndrome.

on the contrary i think this is perfectly timed and placed.
I have been thinking a lot of the same things Murple has said.. PhreeX is being practically worshipped by people who never ever interacted with him. People go on and on about how he was so smart and how Phreex was the last person they'd expect to OD.
Perhaps it was a suicide attempt. IMO if you REALLY wanna die, you don't attempt suicide, you commit it. I'm not gonna say anything more bout that cause i don't know PhreeX's situation.
Regardless this ought to be a lesson to all that even if you are extremely well versed in drug information, you are still at risk. there is no such thing as harm prevention with drugs, just harm reduction.

this may have been a suicide attempt. He may very well have known what he was doing.
As Dave once told me that his ultimate intention was to commit suicide (when he ran out of money, to be precise) via an overdose of sorts, I maintain that he wanted and planned to do this.
That said, Dave certainly has been reckless with drugs before...and I fully agree that the 'do more, get really fucked up' high risk attitude of this forum is problematic. I posted some comments that relate partially to what I said in the Announcements Forum.
Btw, if you weren't admired by SG and PhreeX were in a better state, you can damn well bet this thread would be closed. ;)

I'm agreeing pretty much 100% with Murple in this case. He's hit the nail on the head.
I think that certainly the whole praising of knowledge thing, is kind of moot if the person has overdosed themselves. If they've overdosed, they clearly either didn't have the knowledge, or had the knowledge and didn't use it, both amounting to slightly different things, but coming under the broader covering of the term "stupidity".
It is definately sad that PhreeX may or may not any longer be with us, but it is absolutely stupid and shortsighted to let this pain blind us to the issues at hand. Saying "this is not the time", and ignoring topics like this only serves to perpetuate the myth of knowledge leading to invulnerablity, and hence can basically lead to MORE people ending up dead.
-plaz out-

I firmly believe junkies all have the same fate, to die in an attempt at getting high.

Hmmm the term Junkie... many people have different versions of this word.
Personally i refer to a junkie as a drug addict who steals for their high, who doesn't care about anyone else in their life except for that high, who will lie to get their high. Then there are drug users who pay for their habit, still maintain to have a normal life but like to get high...

That may be true in many cases, but there's also a good number of junkies who have lifelong addictions to opiates or other drugs and live to a ripe old age leading productive and happy lives. There's also plenty of non-junkies who kill themselves off with just casual drug use... all it takes is one lapse of judgement leading you to drive drunk, one accidental mismeasurement of a dose, one bag of some some drug with a poisonous impurity. Addiction in and of itself is no guarantee of a tragic end, nor is the lack of an addiction a guarantee that you can use drugs with no repercussions.
