Photography Photography Thread vs. BL Shutterbugs unite!

You don't happen to live in Brisbane by any chance, Miss_vanilla? I would love to go on a photography field-trip with you :D I absolutely love your photographs too; such a wonderful eye! You have a fantastic knack for seeing like a camera <3

^ Yes, Brissie! I answered in another thread - thank you also! That means a lot, I've only had my DSLR for a couple of years or so and am still learning. A field trip would be fun, I don't have any friends who are into photography like me, mostly they look at me weirdly when I take my camera out to take photos of some random thing ;), or food if we're out at dinner or something.

I cracked the screen on my camera a few months ago, so photography has been put on hold for me :( Here's some of the better shots I took before the untimely death of my camera:

So I've already posted these in the pets thread in the lounge, but for those of you who don't really venture into that world of chaos and debauchery, here's some of muh lil pets!

Oh, that is a great pic!

Oi! Coming from you that's a bloody good compliment . . . unless you're taking the piss. In which case, sod off mate!!

The camera & I have an on-again off-again relationship. I'm still a bit hesitant about taking it with me in public, but I'm really enjoying it so far. There's a lot to learn, I picked up a good tip in one of those photography magazines though. They suggested picking a "theme" and focusing [no pun intended] on just that for awhile. I've yet to pick one, was thinking maybe shadows? Your photos are great, btw. Do you use any editing software?

I definitely wasn't takin' the piss, man. And for sure appreciate that you think so highly of my photos! Much love muh brotha!!!

As for the editing software question. When I first got my camera, I had this "I'll never use Photoshop" attitude... thinking that if I couldn't get a good picture without it, I'm just a shit photographer. I later checked it out for one reason or another and I LOVE it. I do use photoshop, but I usually use it for more subtle things like color saturation, brightness, and things like that. Photoshop is absolutely (in my opinion) a great tool so long as you don't ever rely TOO heavily on it. Sometimes I find it really adds to the vibe of the picture to do some color balancing. Like the top picture (the one that looks like my dog snapped a pic of himself), I did some color balancing and gave it a slight magenta haze... I feel like it kinda gives it a low-fi, vintage-ish, self shot, feel. So yeah... like I said... post editing software is a great tool, just don't rely TOO MUCH on it or else you'll get lazy with the camera.

Also, stay up on it, bruv! I go through periods of being lazy sometimes, but the way I improve the most with photography is taking SHIT LOADS of photos and adjusting the settings constantly to find ones that really work well. There'll be days when you take 1,000 photos and only get 15 that you really like, but I assure you that those 15 are probably gonna fuel you to get better!

Yeah, I had that photo in mind when I asked the question. Its for sure got that vintage feel going for it. And I really like the out of focus background and use of empty space in the third pic. It really makes the dog "pop out", almost coming out at you. Good show ol' chap.

Some photos I took with my girlfriends Nikon a couple of days after we moved.

Ah! If only the stars had been out.
*Cough*UsePhotoshop*Cough* ;)

Excellent photos, guys. :) I wish my house had decent enough lighting to take good pictures of mah dogs.

This thread really makes me want to dig out my Cannon Rebel TI--Haven't used it since '06 or '07. :-/

I went to an awesome warehouse rave last weekend and thought it would be fun to make up a bunch of fucked-up signs for people to hold for portraits. I ended up getting about sixty so feel free to check out the gallery. Sorry about the quality, as they were all shot on my iPhone. I call this project "raver confessions" and I think I'm going to do it at more parties with a better camera.
