Philosophers of Today

I didn't include Nassim Nicholas Taleb in my last post because I assumed his name was already posted, but a search proves otherwise. He may be arrogant, and he may be overstating his ideas, but he's been brashly kicking shit around and making trouble for years yet manages to retain a wide influence. That's a sign of greatness. I find him refreshing (and colorful!).

I really enjoy reading Alain de Botton. I love he simplifies a lot of the great philosophers text which allows people who might not understand the complexities of philosophy to still learn from some of the great philosophers. What do you guys think of him?

It's probably best to look at philosophers within particular disciplines. Political philosophy, philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, etc. etc. etc.

You don't get noticed for having good ideas unless they make money

If your ideas in any way criticize money, the system in which money flows, or the people who make it, forget about it

^Nassim Nicholas Taleb made his fortune by betting on the 2008 collapse, which he forecast more accurately than any other person. He criticizes the pitfalls of money and openly despises the finance industry, but his philosophy seems to strongly imply you have to have made money before you can judge those who have it, and appears to model his identity on (the also wealthy) Seneca the Elder. His ideas about making money have to do with its relationship with personal freedom, i.e. what he terms "fuck you money." He's highly successful despite this, and American. Granted, he comes from an illustrious family in Lebanon and his ideas can theoretically be used to make money.
