Hi
I'm new to the forum so apologies if I'm not posting this in the right place? I wanted some advice really. I've been taking tramadol for a back injury now daily for the last 4 months, usually 4 X 50mg capsules per day. They are the instant release capsules. Unfortunately I've also been taking between 1.5 to 2grams of Phenibut daily for 4 months too. What's the best way to taper off these as my back is ok now? Not sure if I should taper the tramadol first, keeping the Phenibut at the same dose, then taper the Phenibut, or taper the Phenibut keeping the tramadol dose the same, then taper the tramadol. To throw a slight spanner in the works, me, my wife and two kids are away on a holiday for a month to NZ from 9th March (19 days away). Now I can take the tramadol with me as they are on prescription but we fly through Dubai and I've heard some horror stories about taking tramadol/codeine into Dubai even with a prescription and doctors letter. I certainly won't be taking any Phenibut with me!! Please help, not sure what to do!

Hi, Welcome aboard Booboo12 ! !

This is a great place to start. I cannot say for sure, especially since Tramadol isn't your typical opiate and also works as an antidepressant of sorts. When I have been dependent on opiate type agonists and Gaba drugs simultaneously, I usually drop the opiates first, then taper off the GABA. I have not taken Phenibut though - directly.

It's good you do recognize to taper one at a time. I find this is the best way to go for a successful outcome if you are doing it on your own.

I would suggest another forum for more support. Would you mind if I move your post to a drug discussion forum?

Thank you for joining and congrats on wanting to be free of these 2 medications. :)

I would definitely taper the tramadol first as well. The tramadol can be tapered relatively quickly, about 15-20% of your daily dose dropped every 3 to 4 days, whereas phenibut needs to be tapered very slowly, around 5-10% of your dose every 3 to 4 days.

I agree with everyone above - Taper off your tramadol then phenibut. Phenibut has some nasty WDs so you want to do a SLOW taper on it. I know personally how bad withdrawals from phenibut can be, so do not try to cold turkey on that.
Also, you have not been on tramadol for that long so you could possibly cold turkey the tramadol and phenibut would actually HELP your WD symptoms.
much love to you, hang in there!

Hey guys
Thanks a lot for your advice, I decided to come off the Phenibut first as I am going away on holiday and cannot take that with me at all. I dropped approx 200mg per day til I got to 500mg then I had a joint or two one night and decided to go to bed without any Phenibut (still taking the tramadol) and I felt OK next day, tonight (2nd day) I'm going to take some Nytol to help me sleep as I reckon I'll be a bit insomniac tonight. I have a feeling I'm off the Phenibut though, may be wrong, might be thT the w/d get bad from now on but we'll see. I'll stay in the tramadol and taper off whilst on holiday!
