[Peyote Subthread] In The Wild

I read that an important technique to use while harvesting wild peyote is to cut the button off diagonally (in reference to the ground). When you cut off the button the plant bleeds out juices, too much of this juice left atop the exposed top of the root can cause mold growth. Cutting the button diagonally will allow the juices to slide off of the remaining plant, therefor reducing the chance of mold growth.

I've read indians who've been harvesting peyote their entire lives say the plant often still dies after they've cut it even with 60 years of experience. It's a very sensitive, slow-growing plant and the last thing it needs is kids digging into it with blades :\

LiX I don't mean to rain on your parade, but don't you think there are 10,000,000 other people in the area looking for the same thing you are?

there aren't 10,000,000 people in the big bend area. it's a giant, beautiful national park out in the middle of nowhere near the south texas border.

My friends found some peyote out there a few years back. I think spending a day hiking around in big bend sounds like a fucking awesome idea, and if you found some psychedelic cacti while you're at it, added bonus! Big bend is such a nice place, go hiking "just to hike, not looking for cactus" and maybe you'll stumble upon some.

The Big Bend area is deserted. Just be careful hiking, the dry ground can crumble sending you falling down onto cactii.

Peyote is very abundent in the hill country in Texas, and West Texas... It is very hard to find though because most of it is underground and grass and dirt are all over the top part of the cactus, making it extremely hard to find. Although it's close to being extinct in the wild, many native americans grow tons of them, legally, in peyote farms.

I have a friend who claims to have grafted peyote onto San Pedro's, for one is that possible?

I've seen pictures, beautiful organic sculptures

This adds to what I was going to post, I would suggest properly slicing some heads and grafting them, letting the roots regrow. You could really HELP a population in your area, opposed to just munching them to death...but yeah.. :\

P. Torch, know it, love it

^Don't eat wild peyote! But that said, do eat grown peyote!
I have a friend who claims to have grafted peyote onto San Pedro's, for one is that possible
Literally meant one button, but I've never seen or know about grafting at alll.... Guy in question gave me a nice rotten cactus :( I am surprised at how 'quickly' my peyote has sent up lil shoots; then again, its done nothing else for about 6 weeks since....

The problem with peyote is that it takes SOOOO long to grow; if you eat 8-10 buttons (which would be an average dose- though your best reasearching more for more accurate doasge then that) your eating 80-100 years of growing time....stick with San Pedro or Peruvian Torch I say; though I have dried buttons myself, they are cultivated, so I'm not too concerned about dissemniating the population. As soon as my peyote's have started really blooming then theres going to be a few people getting prickly presents, plus a lot of cloning in my outdoor body processing factory.

i live in minnesota so i'am pretty sure they are not wild. and i'am for the enviroment so even if i did come across wild ones a picture is all i would take.

It is possible to graft peyote onto peruvian torch. Its recommended actually, since it reduces growing time.

Peyote is on the brink of extinction in the wild. Leave them alone and use san pedro.

+5. San Pedro is a sustainable and legal alternative to peyote.

Others have already said it, but just leave the wild peyote alone. There are enough people taking it as it is. I have two peruvian torch and one san pedro growing, and they have grown like two feet in one year. You should be able to grow a couple of doses per year with just 2 or 3 cacti. Even more if it is potent. There are ways to increase the potency.

Peyote IS NOT nearly extinct in the wild! Take this from a native Texan and a man who has traveled extensively throughout Mexico. It is abundant in the part of the world this man has moved to esp. on the other side of the river.

Some tips of hunting:
A. They like to hide under bigger cactus.
B. Be careful crossing fence lines people will shoot you for trespassing in SW Texas. They most likely wont report it either, they'll just leave you out on the ranch.
C. If you are an American Indian and have verification of that (or have a friend that is) You can come down to the western part of the Rio Grande Valley and buy it from a really cool old guy who supports his entire extended family by selling it for religous use.

.....

p.s.s Yes the buttons can be grafted to most P. torch or San Pedro with a little patience.
