Petition to legalize pot is first to hit White House threshold

A proposal to legalize marijuana is the first idea on the White House's online petition site to gather enough signatures to break the threshold required to receive an official response.

The White House has promised to evaluate and issue a formal response to any idea that receives more than 5,000 signatures within 30 days. Visitors are free to offer their own proposals.

The first proposal to reach that limit asks, "Isn't it time to legalize and regulate marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol? If not, please explain why you feel that the continued criminalization of cannabis will achieve the results in the future that it has never achieved in the past?"

[ORIGINAL POST]The Whitehouse recently opened a new website allowing people to create petitions to have questions answered. The top question so far is:

"We the people want to know when we can have our "perfectly legitimate" discussion on marijuana legalization. Marijuana prohibition has resulted in the arrest of over 20 million Americans since 1965, countless lives ruined and hundreds of billions of tax dollars squandered and yet this policy has still failed to achieve its stated goals of lowering use rates, limiting the drug's access, and creating safer communities.

Isn't it time to legalize and regulate marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol? If not, please explain why you feel that the continued criminalization of cannabis will achieve the results in the future that it has never achieved in the past?"

If you agree with this question and would like to give your support in seeing it answered then please sign it. It already has well above the 5,000 signatures required but it's nice for all of us cannabis consumers to lend our support.

I'm sure it will get a similar answer to the other questions posed to Obama on this subject, basically dismissed with a bad joke and quickly swept under the rug. But it's good to show the strength of our numbers especially with elections coming around.

I signed up and signed the petition among others in the same vein.

I can't wait to see what the Obummer administration comes up with in response.

I would hope that it would be positive but I'm of course doubtful.

While I love that this is here, this belongs in a different forum, perhaps Drugs In the Media. I'm going to move it there, mods, if it doesn't belong, maybe homeless?

Screw this administration. There has been a popular movement in the United States, full of poles and media attention, for the last thirty years solid. In the seventies, people were almost positive decriminalization was going to happen any second. back in the day Jimmy Carter was making a lot of noise about federal decriminalization. they're just trying to shut us up and also bag a bunch of the youth vote for Obama at the same time. The recession is going to keep going like this, and they are going to have a problem when the newly obliterated middle class increases the black market workforce in a big way. I hope they crash and burn with that bullshit about legalization - totally fronting by putting this up as if it is being given consideration on the federal level. he's doing the same shit with latinos, acting like he's about to sign a fast track immigration executive order if only you believe him long enough to vote.

I already signed my petition with dollar bills. And they can go ahead and keep it illegal while they're at it, so that they don't ever get a cut. Cocksuckers.

It looks like it's doing a heck of a lot better than the UK petitions.

However little faith we have in our respective governments, it's always worth sending the message home every time we have an opportunity. Otherwise we get the usual, "the majority of the public are against legalisation". Having polls and petitions in our favour is definitely a positive.

Just signed. I doubt they will take it seriously even though we have over 32000 sigs and it only requires 5000 :P

Last time he adressed a similar question it went something like this

"This was the most popular question on the internet and we want to make sure we answer it" "The question is will legalizing marijuana improve the economy?" :as everyone in the crowd chuckles: "The answer is no hahahaha i do not think it will help."

What a fucking tool. Atleast give me a fucking explanation instead of just laughing off serious topics that should at the least be discussed.

He's getting you guys good. This just presents the illusion that the dialogue is ongoing to get every last little undecided vote.

Obama is a spineless coward. The biggest disappointment in US presidential history.
But I signed anyway, because we must continue to send out the message that this is a real issue.

I noticed that highhooked mentioned "the most popular question" on the internet.
It is important that it is a popular question, and that this petition gets a lot of signatures.
Without people signing this, it sends the opposite message.
If we get 100,000 signatures, it says something, no matter if Obama wants to acknowledge it (unlikely) or not.

If a glimmer of so called democracy could have been witnessed, it would have been if they had some rule saying that after having a significant amount of support a petition becomes a Bill to be discussed in Congress or it becomes a Referendum that has the possibility of becoming a law when presented to the public at large.
