Hi everyone, this is pretty much my first post and am hoping I don 't break any rules, so here goes:

I am in my late 40's with chronic lower back pain and more recently a sciatica now on the other side of my back. I have taken Percocets (prescribed) I take about 8-12 #10's a day for pain and I often enhance it with Vicodin about 3 #5's a day. This has been going on for about 3 years now. As you would suspect, I have pretty much built a tolerance but what I have done is restricted my intake on days my back is fairly ok and cut back to only 6 Percs a day and then out of those 6, I may take one in the morning, 1 in the afternoon and the balance all at once in the evening. One would think I am not much if a 'junky' with this sort of discipline, but it's because of this variation and manipulation in dosage that I have been able to maximize the pain killing effects of this medication.

Problem now is my Sciatic pain that has just started a few weeks ago. It runs from my back all the way down to my ankle and the only way to help the pain is if I "up" my perc intake, add 2 Motrins and up mu Vicodin in take also. AND I have to be laying down. I am waiting on health insurance for low income people since I have applied for disability and have no income to speak of. I only receive 180 Percs a month from doc and this month's supply is already nearly depleted because of the sciatic pain. I stay about 70% of my day in bed. Driving brings on deep, deep pain as does sitting for dinner:

QUESTION: My doctor, like a lot of doctors these days, is skittish about giving me more pills. I am asking him for 240 a month to help and he has said no and he always tries to talk to me into weening off of them but I tell him my life would be hell without them. Indeed, I have been diagnosed with moderate/severe degenerative disk disease on the other side of my back. My question is, if he still refuses to up my Percs, is there something else I can ask him to prescribe to me that is a little stronger than the #10 Percs I get? I assume Oxycodone is stronger, but I seriously doubt he will give me those. And I have taken 20mg Morphine before, but I didn't like the feel of them. I will say also, I like the feeling the Percs give me aside from the pain killing effect, so whatever it is you suggest, has to also make me happy. I always chew my pills so I can get it into the bloodstream quicker. A typical day for my dosage is one in the morning, one around 1pm, 2 around 5pm and around 4 to 5 at night. Also, my Vike intake is 1/2 on the mornings, half around 1pm and 1 whole one at night. I am not looking to get plastered, but I am looking to get out of bed and enjoy a decent buzz also. Anyway, thanks!

OOOps...By the way, I just read, what does it mean 'no pill identification' from the rules? Does it mean someone coming on here and saying they have a certain pill and want help identifying it? Thanks!

Yes, there are pill-id sites you can go to for a quick answer but we can't do it here. What's troubling is the fact you're ingesting so much acetaminophen. If you can limit yourself to 6 a day, that's better than 12 a day plus vicodens. You didn't say though the amount of Tylenol in these tablets. Perhaps your doctor could prescribe something else if it's not helping your pain.

If you don't like morphine you prolly wont like oxys but id say give it a try oxys are great for pain relief, btw your doctors a dick try and get a new oine

Yes, sorry...The Percocets are 10/325 and the vikes are 5/500...The doctor takes blood tests occasionally and my liver seems normal at this time. I am looking for suggestions on something stronger that I can ask him for without him raising an eyebrow..For example my brother says Roxicet seems better but all the info I read sahs contrary, that Roxicet does not help with pain as much EVEN THOUGH it's supposed to be the same ingredients, just a different name.

My suggestion would be Lyrica. It has helped me with my lower back pain tremendously. I was on Vicodin, morphine and Percocet in the past and Lyrica is working better for me. Good luck! Hope you find something that works for you!

B clux, I thought Oxy's were basically higher dose Percocets without the Tylenol? In which case I would probably like Oxys but am afraid to get too wrapped into them. The reason I don't like Morphine is because it makes my leg jerk (always) and I don't think the buzz is as fun nor do I think the pain relief is as good. And for FLGirl616, is Lyrica a narcotic . Yes, I am in pain, but I also like the fact that Percs make me forget what a miserable life I have. And yes, I think my doctor is a jerk, but aren't all doctors getting more freaked out about prescribing these or is it just California? When I told my doctor I now had sciatic nerve pain, he prescribed Amitripiline (spelling) I looked it up and it's Elavil. Elavil? I knew a girl in the 70's that was on Elavil and she was a mess! This is basically an anti-depressant that also serves for pain. It has a really bad rap on the internet. This Lyrica, is it in conjunction with Percocet or instead of Percocet? Anyway, one time I went for my refill appointment and they told me my doc was not going to be available that day and the P.A. won't fill out narcotic scripts and there were like 5 of us in the office that day for our scripts, so yeah, this doc is an a-hole but without insurance, it's hard to find a doc. I had a doc once and gave me a piss test and she found out I also took Vikes, She said the next time she finds out I took Vikes and Percocets, she would cut me off. Another doctor gave me my meds and when I went to see him the following month, he had moved to another city and the new doctor agreed to give me the pills if I signed a contract that I would ween off of them...So, no..I didn't sign...I think it's just California...But now, I have xrays to prove I have major problems in my back which I didn't have before, so it might be easier. Sounds like I should move to Florida! LOL!

Hell no Paul, Florida is not what is used to be thanks to the caravans of people from other states coming in droves to see pain doctors. That and the publicity that came with it wrecked it for legitimate pain patients. The trend for doctors to use caution when prescribing schedule II is becoming very common all over. It's not like you're in your 20's and they shouldn't treat you like a kid.

You can expect any pain doctor to make you sign a contract, but you shouldn't have to agree to wean off unless surgery is planned. When I was in pain management, it was more/less agreeing that you would not go to other doctors for pain meds or divert them. There are other drugs they can prescribe you, just tell them you don't want all that Tylenol. The worst they can say is no. You can find another pain doctor but having an MRI with a written report is usually needed along with your previous medical records.

Lyrica is not a narcotic and I take it with my Vicodin. However, when I have run out of Vicodin and inky had the Lyrica my back pain was almost non-existent. What I have been doing recently is alternating days with my Lyrica and Vicodin. One day I'll take just Lyrica and the next day I'll take Lyrica. I just started this a few days ago and it seems to be working great. Your doctor should have no objections to giving you a script for Lyrica since it's not a narcotic. Good look! Hope this helps you!

Thanks FLGirl...I read it makes people suicidal, but I will ask my doc about it...Thank you also, T. Calderone. I used to be a tradesman, I worked very hard all my life and when I mean all my life, I mean I have been working since I was 11 years old, without a skip, and I guess it's all catching up to me. I also used to be really athletic, martial arts, swimming, lifting weights even a champion bike rider, won numerous races and now I look at my life and I get very sad. Those days will never come back again. Never again.
