PC PC Gamers - Whatcha playin?

Eh... it does this by slowing down your GPU so your monitor can keep up IIRC. Just get a better monitor that can handle 144Hz refresh rates. Plus the G-Sync tacks on a few hundo extra to the price tag cause every mofo wants to be cool and have an Nvidia card.

I'm a cheap bastard, AMD FTW.

My monitor has Freesync, never even enabled it *shrugs*

Actually, it caps the monitor to prevent screen tear, not the GPU. It's literally handled by a processor chip built into the monitor.

My monitor can quite easily do 144Hz refresh rates, as it's 144Hz. That's the problem; I can't afford to splash out on a graphics card that will consistently handle 144Hz (at 1440p), so I can experience a lot of screen tear. Also, G-sync is Nvidia, but supports freesync which is AMD, and vice versa, which is why I recommended both.

I have an (Nvidia) GTX 1070, second hand, because the power draws on the equivalent AMD GPU's available at the time (early last year) were likely, I felt, to cripple my PSU/system. My monitor supports AMD freesync, and AMD made my Ryzen 3700x CPU, so I assure you, this has absolutely nothing to do with being cool or a fan boy.

Maybe that's why you don't think it's preferable to have it enabled. If you're a cheap bastard, as you say, then you should maybe check it out. It makes things a lot smoother and means the frame rate doesn't cause as many issues regarding screen tear/stutter. It means you don't need to spend as much on an expensive GPU.

I'm a G-Sync user myself. I also use a 144hz monitor (Acer Predator XB271HU bmiprz 27") well technically it can overclock to 165hz but haven't bothered messing with much in the way of settings. I went with IPS over TN as the accuracy was more important to me than response times. The main real time games I play are RTS as opposed to FPS. I haven't really run into that many games that have cause me to want to / need to mess with much in the way of monitor or graphic tweaking. I hit the 144 FPS in most titles without an issue. I'm curious if overclocking it to 165hz would provide any noticeable difference? It seems small enough to not be noticeable? I haven't used any of the higher than 144hz refresh monitors to know how large a difference it makes though I've heard they're quite crisp. I've not used FreeSync to compare it.

Also I can never remember if G-Sync also works the other way & it lower frame rates if needed? IIRC that's a different setting. I used to mess with graphics a lot back in the day but with this new system I haven't really needed to. As it's been so long I seem to have forgotten even some of the basic terminology.

I originally had considered a 4K monitor when shopping for one but didn't think my system could handle it. :\ That & for what I was looking for feature / quality wise 4K just seemed like to many compromises to keep within my PC / Monitor budget. ;)

At least in terms of the performance I was looking for it seemed like 4k would require a 2080 TI. I can't afford a TI. 1440p seemed like a good compromise. Though I must say the whole G-Sync licensing thing dropping prices a bit not long after I acquired my monitor was a bit of a disappointment but it is what it is. I'm just happy to have a nice setup. :) I've found that simulated 4k with DSR seems to also be a decent compromise for some titles. I also use ReShade / SweetFX / ENB / Etc. as desired. Due to cooling issues (& a lack of a need right off) I haven't messed with overclocking my processor or graphics card though they are both overclockable. A 9700K & a Zotac 2080 AMP respectively.

I'm not at all familiar with Zotac FireStorm. I've no idea if that utility works well or not. I have some very minor knowledge of MSI Afterburner / RTSS. At some point in the future I'll likely run into games that might require me to consider tweaking or overclocking but for now I've done alright. Speaking of graphics that reminds me I need to take a break from MTG Arena & finish up my X-Com play through as I've mentioned before (Note to self ).That & I'd like to find a FPS to install. Occasionally I enjoy a FPS to blow off steam etc. but haven't decided what to go with next. I'd jumped back & went to play through the Unreal Tournament sequels as I never played them but am considering just grabbing a more modern title to see how well something more intensive would look on this machine. As the UT games are entertaining but so many of the older titles seem to require a ton of tweaking to work on modern hardware / resolutions / etc.

I have some FPS in my back log already but haven't decided which if any are worth a play through. Shadow Warrior 1 & 2, Space Hulk Deathwing - Enhanced, WH Verminitide 1 (I've heard skip 1 get 2?) & the Unreal games I mentioned to name a few. If I do play a FPS I'd like it to be something "fun" to play through. I prefer single player. I've heard the Doom games where entertaining single player I might have to consider grabbing one of them.

Any recommendations in that regard for something FPS to play single player when I feel like a change of pace? As I said I'm not that familiar with genre & have a few sitting in my backlog. I just have no idea if any are worth playing... Or if there's anything that came out over the years or recently that's considered a standout in terms of being a single player play through that would be worth taking the time to play. ;)

You might be thinking of v-sync which caps your frame rates if necessary (I think). G-sync doesn't and works more reliably IME. BTW, I'm not talking about FPS games here, just frame rates - I mainly like RPG's. I have recently played The Division 2 though, and half liked it, half didn't.

Yes simulating 4k/etc in older titles can make them look gorgeous - I love doing that in Dragon Age Origins, which is old enough for me to run at 144 FPS at 4K or somwhere near - at the very least a higher resolution than 1440p. I also tend to mod heavily and use reshade and sweetfx. I get 70-80 FPS in the Witcher on pretty high settings, with lots of mods to replace textures etc.

Yeah I was probably thinking of V-Sync. That sounds right. I use G-Sync myself as well though. I usually play RT/TB strategy. My apologies; I was using FPS as an example as they tend to be what I think of when I think of demanding titles that would affect frame rates. I rarely play FPS.
As I said I am only now just getting around to the UT sequels. Besides the classics I've played very little in the genre. I'm a big fan of modding as well! Though in different games. ;)

I never played The Witcher but have heard of modding related to it & other RPGs (Skyrim, Etc.). Graphical modding can make a huge difference. Though I enjoy mods in general outside of graphical ones. I was heavily involved in the Dawn of War: Soul Storm modding scene. Actually I still have membership on the Discord server & sites. I need to check it back out sometime. Some really amazing modding done with that game. If anyone is into WH40K & enjoys RTS that game is probably the most in depth WH40K related title when you factor in the mod scene. An amazing amount of depth! I really need to re-install it & see what progress has been made since last I checked. So many factions where added. It really spanned the gamut of WH40K. Some really talented individuals in that mod scene! (y)

Remedy Entertainment's Control!!! One of the best games I've played in a long time.

That game did look interesting. From what I've seen / read that would be a good candidate for "taxing" my system / graphics. It looked like it would be a nice looking & entertaining FPS. I'll have to keep that one in mind. Appreciate the suggestion. :)

Been playing World War Z that I got for free from the Epic Games launcher. I know some peeps probably don't like the business practices of Epic, but I've gotten about 30+ games for free now just by downloading whatever is in the free week section. You keep it forever too if anyone likes free shit. I do :)

During the quarantine, I took this time to upgrade my pc and I revisited the STALKER series and beat all 3 plus about a dozen overhaul mods, and at the moment Ive been playing ARMA 3 again actually as I’m typing this I can hear my self getting shot at In the game lol

Oh yea, definitely. I'm playing according to the subreddit instructions for first timers which is texture packs, the community patch zkrp or whatever, and i think that's it.

I'll probably check out Lost Alpha afterwards.

This week maybe 70€. I could get it to 250-300 a week with daily meth.
That's so fucking awesome.

I don't think ESO currency is that valuable but I did rack up a lot playing it compulsively.

I updated like 20+ addons. I want to log in just to furnish housing. I'm too addicted to my acct to ever part ways with it <3

Thanks, for how easy it is + I can be on drugs I find it more than enough.

And I understand back in my high school days I spent most night up and just grinded SWTOR.

I want to go back to grinding some video games but I'm still like just having fun in lockdown.

I managed to get through some hard vet content on eso and was like "wow I can't believe it".
