Paxil Lawsuit

Did any of you guys see headline news about a week ago? A bunch of people who took Paxil for depression filed a lawsuit against the company (Purdue?) because they claimed that it caused notable withdrawl symptoms when they stopped taking it, physical and psychological dependence. I know it says not to stop taking SSRI's abruptly because of withdrawl-type symptoms "which should not be taken as a sign of dependence" according to the pill book. Anyways, the lawsuit also claims that the producer of the drug has know about these withdrawl reactions being more severe with Paxil but said nothing publicly about it and continued to tout it as non-habit forming.
Whether or not this is true is beyond me but it goes to show you that you can't trust SSRI's and shouldn't let your doctor try to shove a prescription for them down your throat.

I can agree with the idea, and hell, I suffered HORRIBLY from anti-d withdrawals... but this business of "sue the maker" is FUCKING BULLSHIT!

If the maker knew that this drug was horribly bad in this way and withheld it so the drug would get through trials and make them money, then yes sue and screw the maker, but not just because a drug does something wrong, the company has to release it for self benifit and INTEND not say anything that would hold it back, that constitutes a lawsuit.
Oxycontin lawsuits are BULLSHIT because they cant be responsible for all opiates being addictive, and not even there own oxycontin because other people make oxycodone as well so they must be responsible as well, purdue didnt push oxycodone through trials so it would make money, it was already approved they just made a nice version that would help pain patients a lot. Paxil, they developed and pushed along, its unique and oxycodone isnt.

Actually, I must take the right stance here - Purdue knew DAMN WELL that OxyContin would be abused, thats why they sold the hell out of it to doctors so fast... still, you do NOT SUE THEM because you're idiot child OD's - that isn't Purdue's fault...
With Paxil, or any SSRI, we REALLY DON'T HAVE MUCH INFO on these long term effects - yes, Paxil is agressivly marketed, but no, you're doctor doesn't FORCE you to take it - you're give the OPTION ... the company that makes the drug certinly doesn't force you to take it ...
I think the problem is in doctors that don't properly prescribe these meds...

With OxyContin I believe they were designed to intentionally get people hooked, and I think the information they gave to their doctors suggested they start people out with massive doses. I can't see any reason why anyone should even need 80mgs of oxycodone in a short period of time.
With Paxil and other anti-depressants, I think the studies were rushed and the companies completely overshadowed the potential dangers of these drugs with the fact that you could help people that were completely miserable and dysfunctional. And I think you could hide other problems with them by giving them to completely irrational people who are so screwed up in the head that they wouldn't be able to tell you if this stuff gave them negative effects.
But overall I believe the doctor prescribing the medication has more responsibility than the drug manufacturers. The doctor fucking went to school for 8 years to learn how to treat people and if they don't understand what the fuck they're prescribing to people and don't know it can hurt their patients, they shouldn't be a fucking doctor anyways. I'm some 22 year year old former fuck up and whenever I hear about people's visits to the doctors it makes me laugh because I haven't been to school and a lot of times I could have done a much better job in understanding and treating a problem.

No, OxyContin was, and *IS* a fucking miracle drug - it has saved a lot more lives then it has taken... Purdue didn't try to make a drug that would get people addicited, but I am fairly sure that they were thinking "we better milk this while we can because as soon as some kid figures out you can crush them and break the time release, we are fucked" ...
Yeah, overall I agree - when accompanied with THERAPY and (possibly) LIFESTYLE CHANGES, medications like SSRI's can truely change lives, the problem is, to many doctors see them as a "fix all" ... they hand out scripts, increase the dose, and move on to the next chart...

I'm currently on Paxil to combat anxiety and depression. After doing more reading on it, I must admit that I am kind of worried. My doctor talked to me for less than 10 minutes and made me fill out a 8 question test before he perscribed it to me. It seemed just a little too quick & easy of a fix.
The thing that really scares me is that.. forgetting my medication turns me from a fairly averagly happy person.. into a very very depressed, almost suicidal person. I'm going back to my doctor to talk about switching medications.. becuz anything is better than this.
