As I've said before I work the graveyard shift in a 24 hour restuarant. That is, I work 11pm-6am. So I see all kinds. The worst was there was this black woman who is a professional panhandler who would make the rounds to all the late night spots and give a speech in the dining room.
She had leaflets, business cards, and a story. Her story went something like this:
Her son was killed in an accident by a drunk driver 10 years ago. She has sence been on the crusade to stop drunk driving by providing a service of picking anyone up for free, anytime of night, and taking them safely home from the club. Her story is more elliquent, lengthy, and moving, but that was the gist. And all she asks in return is a donation for gas and her time, but it's not required.
She goes around doing this about once a month, and always with a different phone number, but no one cares to check it out. The dining room
usually explodes with applause for her and her efforts, and she walks around the room collectiong cash from the dining drunkards. My manager always kicks her out, and everyone always gets really mad. But we don't allow panhandling in the restuarant. If you call her number you will always get a wrong number. I don't think anyone even keeps the leaflets or business cards she passes out because they are usually drunk, so the general public doesn't know it's all a scam.
A couple of years ago the evening news did an interview with her, so most people have heard of her, but later in the newspaper it came out in a small article in the back that she was a fraud. Of course not too many people have seen this.
Either way, she doesn't work, she has been on disability since her son passed away. She pays her bills with government money, and funds her "habits" with panhandling. Personally I think it's lame to prey on the bleeding hearts of kind people by lying to them and taking their hard earned money. I'd rather see extra money go to other charities that actually need funding. But to each their own.
Edit:This does not include Buskers or street performers. I think they add character to the city, it's just panhandlers and bums I have issues with.
