This past winter, I found myself following a drug dealer and his crew up the dark stairway of a triple-decker apartment building on the outskirts of Boston. Reaching a unit on the top floor, the young man pulled a gun from his waistband and set it on a coffee table next to a digital scale and a pile of drugs.

Entering a drug den, you might expect to find cocaine or heroin. But side by side with this pile of "hard stuff" were prescription pills, lots of them.

The little green tablets the men were dealing -- known as "Perc 30s," "Percs" or simply "30s" on the streets -- were 30-milligram oxycodone. In medicine, oxycodone is known as an opioid analgesic, a powerful painkiller prescribed to patients with acute or chronic pain. On the streets, it's known as heroin in a pill, and to borrow some Boston slang, it will get you "completely jammed."

It sort of irritates me how the news media/general population draws a big fat line between all prescription main medication (including morphine, even though heroin is a morphine prodrug) and heroin.

yeah, it really sucks when people are surprised that you "sank so low" to do heroin, when all you did was make the economic/quality choice amongst a selection of what is essentially the same product in a multitude of flavors.

I thought the green ones were 15s? Also this person is obviously from my area, this is the only place I've heard everyone call all oxycodone IR pills "percs" be it Percocet or Roxicodone... I've heard quite a few people talk negatively about OC users while taking "percs" themselves. Not a lot of people care to look into drugs at all I guess.

New title: "Turns out heroin is a painkiller"

Plenty of painkillers are more potent and possibly more "euphoric" than heroin, especially orally-consumed heroin (which isn't much different from morphine, I imagine). Big pharma has exploited the opium poppy for everything it's worth, creating more unnecessary formulations than society knows what to do with. Oxymorphone, really? What advantage does that have over, say, Dilaudid or fentanyl? I think their time would be better served innovating cures for disease, but that wouldn't be very profitable now would it?

A prescription bottle or time-release formula does not a legitimate medicine make. Still, the word "heroin" carries so much stigma--some well-deserved, some not--that the average person considers it far worse than any prescription opiate. To some, this is breaking news.

^ Yeah, that. If heroin weren't illegal and it was introduced now as a pharmaceutical, people wouldn't think it's any more dangerous than Vicodin. Not that in its pure form and used orally it is, but everyone thinks it is. It's like my stupid friend using all these non-cannabinoid RCs, he uses mephedrone and refuses to think its bad because he thinks legal=healthy.

Laws are the new religion. Both create idiots of the highest caliber. If they didn't, of what use would they be?

Orally consumed Heroin will be converted to Morphine before it crosses the BBB, yes. Snorted properly or IVd it will cross the BBB before it's converted.

I spend hundreds of dollars on painkillers at times and spending all this money makes me realize why people go on to heroin. I would have already as well but I'm not crazy enough to go down that path...

Yeah, it's the obvious choice. People have been successfully trained to feel stomach pain when the word "heroin" is seen or heard, and think of confused classy people when they think of pills.

Just got a call from my grandmother, saying that she wanted to know the truth about whether I was doing heroin. She was hysterical.

I told her that I've done plenty of things including heroin, and that while I wasn't actively trying to hide that particular drug, I didn't mention it because of the emotional response it would elicit. She admitted I was right and then started complaining about our family members' need to immediately jump on the phone with the sensational words, as though doing heroin puts me in a new category of total drug addict. Not really.
