my thoughts
Lessons to be learned by all, No?
I don’t mean this to attack THIS event specifically, as a matter of fact, I feel a little too old at this point to be attending “raves”, but based on what I have read (and things I have heard and personally seen with my own eyes) one thing is abundantly clear:
Event Planning is a business not to be put in the hands of those who have no idea what they are doing.
Listen, I am not dissing this event or it’s organizer(s) as I said. And, I have seen so many events lately crash and burn in similar fashion. These young so-called promoters tend to find out the hard way that it takes more than $$$ and lots of ‘friends’ to throw a successful event. I have attended events done right back east and in CA, and what you don’t realize is that these organizers, bookers, and promoters have business/marketing degrees, a good knowledge of the law, business planning know-how, advertising background and well-established and powerful connections that all play together to carry-out events that have been planned for months or even years.
I hope that the negative feedback on this and other events show these young kids throwing parties that you can not wake up, throw together 10-20 of your friends that DJ (many of which shouldn’t be playing in pubic, much less being asked to pay money to see them) and think that in a month you’ll have a successful, memorable event...
…And yes, I know the argument of giving someone a place to start DJing and so on, but do you want to charge people to see under-par DJ’s, or run a business to turn a profit. Okay, let’s say you’re the saint that truly doesn’t care about money. You’re only ‘about the music’. Well, then tell your guest that you have new, inexperienced, up-coming talent when you promote and let the guest decide. Now that I would honestly respect, and might even pay to see. But I don’t think ‘you’ exist and surely won’t risk your hard earned cash. Prove me wrong…
It’s REALLY time to wake up. And for the love of…whatever…If you’re throwing an event and you’re drunk or f**ked up in ANY manner, you’re an idiot and deserve what you get. Event Planning is a business and to succeed you have to be and act professional.
I know this sounds harsh and mean, but I swear it’s not meant to be. I don’t think these promoters are bad people, many of them are just inexperience and naïve. You are probably surrounded by smart, older people who would probably be willing to assist you. Talk to business owners, Event Planners, even Lawyers or older more established DJ’s who have been around a little longer and have seen the good and the bad. If you legitimize your event and make it look like more than a basement to ‘roll’ in they’ll talk to you.
That’s my two-bits. Take it as you will. I am sure many people will want to slam me (so be it), but I hope most of you will think about what I have said and redirect the scene. In closing, I want to reiterate that I am not directing this post at this specific event.
Best Wishes!!!!!
