OxyContin's change may boost heroin use

well i dont think it will stop the oc abuse in the uk or europe for that matter as the orginal formula are the only ones available here thankgod we dont get them shitty op ones

Give it some time and you will get the OP ones I'm sure. Hope not but it's a highly likely thing to happen there..

Certainly there have been deals between the CIA and cartels but to suggest that oxycontin was invented to create more heroin addicts is ridiculous. Cartels which deal heavily with the US customer base have no problem manipulating price or creating a larger customer base. They don't need to work with perdue pharma to drum up more demand. They simply lower price and raise purity for a couple years like they did in the early 90's and create countless lifelong addicts. Then they cut back on supply to raise price to where they want it before creating a steady supply again. Look at how the Colombians raised the price of cannabis in the late 70's. By producing cannabis products that were immensely more potent and more demanded than the mexican alternative. They flooded the market with a competitively priced potent product before they started regularly withdrawing their product from the market only to bring it back at a much higher price. In one year periods people were paying prices they'd swear they'd never pay only a few months earlier only to repeat the process again and again and it worked every time they did it. The average price for cannabis grew exponentially between the mid 70's and the mid 80's. You could get a trashbag of red lum for what you pay for an ounce of mexican brick today. This is with cannabis a product that doesn't have the addiction liabilities of heroin. Now imagine how effective the same strategy is at raising prices for heroin.

With Afghan heroin which almost solely stays on the european and asian continents where there's a lot less money made per capita off of heroin sales, it is a bit more complicated although they are expanding their customer base quite rapidly although mostly in countries where the price is much less than that found in the US.

First off oxycodone is a weak narcotic and I'd wager a small fraction of those that call themselves oxycodone addicts have anywhere near the physical addiction they think they have. Oxycodone has a pretty good medical profile as far as pain killers go. Unlike morphine, hydromorphone or oxymorphone, when oxycodone is used parenterally like most illicit it gains practically no potency versus being taken orally and in some cases actually loses potency. For example, if someone is prescribed oxymorphone for pain management and they decide to instead inject it, they can turn a relatively mild monthly prescription into a very heavy IV habit. The other factor is oxycodone's addiction liability versus pain killing ability. Although many are psychologically addicted to the drug and say they enjoy how subtle the drug is, it has no IV "rush" and lacks the physical addiction liability that stronger opioids possess. To me, the oxycontin fad really makes no sense. Oxycodone had been prescribed widely and loosely for many years with very few narcotic addicts reporting it as their opiate of choice. It was only when some hillbillies that lived in areas with no access to heroin started robbing pharmacies picking oxycontin over other narcotics which are stronger when the media hyped it which resulted in this inexplicable phenomena. It would cost a fortune even to get the equivalent of a one bag a day heroin habit if using oxycontin, much less a gram of good quality 60-80% purity or higher heroin. Yeah, perdue sales reps did lie to a lot of doctors about the habit forming potential of the drug and perdue did hire a lot of sales reps who used sex and salesmanship to sell pills and had very little knowledge about the drug but that's simply to be expected from immoral pharmaceutical companies. I doubt there was any other motivator than simply for perdue and their sales reps to make a lot of money.

I've always gotten roxy 30mg IR's, so this has no effect on me whatsoever. I hated dealing with 80's in the first place, and the IR's have always been cheaper anyways.

Heroin seems to be expensive as hell in South Florida compared to everywhere else, while oxy is the cheapest available opiate. I don't think that this will effect my fellow South Florida junkies all that much.

boey - I'm surprised that your post is still up. No one will (or, no one 'should') be answering that Q, or emailing you. It's against the rules - if you have legitimate need for this medication you won't have a problem getting it (depending on where you live).

Regarding the main topic - Yes, I agree that this is inevitable. I've never shot 'anything', and have a prescription for IR pain killers. When out (it happens to everyone, right?! *wink*), I used to get ERs (not anymore,eh?), other IR's (not a common item) - in other words, my mind has been wondering to the area of H. Not liking that at all, but I fear it is approaching. Those that have already been tempted will continue to be, and increasingly so.Those that have not (like me) will probably be a little bit MORE tempted, and eventually give in.

See, this is a real problem where I am from (New England). From what I have been told, and I know that discussing prices is not allowed here so I'll tread lightly, the 30 IRs are a lot, lot less expensive in Florida than they are here in New England. I can find the oxycodone 30 IRs and oxymorphone 40 ERs, but they're so expensive that, honestly, I have thought about making the switch to heroin.

i don't know about the veracity of the statement but i heard that 1/2 or a large % at any rate of purdue's oxy supply pre formulation was shipped to TJ were it would be smuggled across the border. I know there were alot of young oxy users (mostly snort) that would end up on MMT. Lately, in AA I hear that alot of people, especially from alot of the more affluent areas of North County are doing heroin. I think oxy, through the laws of market economics drove down the price and increased the quality of heroin tar. It would appear that many are easily making that transition, and the supply is adequate of heroin, last I heard.

why buy them from the clandestine market if you can just get them at the pharmacy (or whatever one's hustle is). That's why roxys are cheap in Florida.

The plain white pill

addiction starts out as an addict's chase after the white pill

will prevent the white pills from being cut, broken, chewed, crushed or dissolved, may prevent the intravenous injection or "pushing" of the narcotic.
^They going after the 10s?

I Totally Agree...

Addicts are Addicts... There is no way to change that... An addict is only gonna change his/her ways if they want too. PERIOD! They are going thru all these desperate measures trying to make oxycontin "abuse proof" I don't know if that's funny or sad... I do Understand stats are stats and these pills are causing a big problem among teens... but what isn't.. If parents B parents like they are suppose to do this whole problem could be soo much better. That is the age Addicts usually become Addicts... you rarely see 30 some "year olds" overdosing on opiates because they did too much there first time... It all goes back to peer pressure.. These little kids see there friends do a lot so they wanna match it... whether it's to impress a girl or show their "machoness" KIDS have no idea that they are playing with fire... They think "well if he can do it and be fine... then so can I" That is where this "pain killer" can be fatal...

I also understand that when these came out Purdue totally lied about the problem it can/will cause. I don't agree with that and they got what a fine of $600 million. Peanuts to these guys... Anyways the point i''m trying to make is that when they thought "cocaine" was the wonder drug. to the Marlboro Man smoking his smokes on primetime tv or even today all these ads for liquor, beer. etc. they were never accountable for babies dying, lung cancer, and drunk driving deaths... It was the individual who was held responsible for his/her own actions. I don't see this being any different... it is easier for kids to get liquor then it is for them to buy oxycontin/codene especially the simply fact of how expensive it is on the street. Kids obviously won't get behind the wheel and drive but surely do something stupid cause injury/death to someone else.

Man I got so much to say on these pills... which believe me I DO NOT think its okay to abuse them but my god... these pills aren't killing these kids! Its the enviroment you allow them to be in which then enables them to do these pills.

Now the dea/fda want all these "tamper proof" pills to take over for the old ones thinking its gonna be the solution! NO!!! Its just gonna make things worse! I myself have experiment with alot of shit in my time and seen some pretty disturbing stuff inorder for the "addict" to get his/her "fix". These new pills can be "snorted" fyi and I even know people that prefer to snort them more then the old ones because now they are saving money.

Maybe these new pills will save some kids lives but there is something else out there that someone's gonna discover while the rest follow that will be just as fatal. Crack was an epidemic and killing people left and right back in the 80's and people of all ages were dieing... cause it was in the ghetto it wasn't that big of a deal even "on top of everything" our own government was bringing it in to our country. That's a whole nother topic on its own-

Parents... stop pointing fingers and everyone else when a tragidy hits close to home! Try being a little more of a teacher and influence in your teens lives and maybe they can spread some "smartness" to others!

I apologize for all bouncing back and forth from topic to topic but that was more of just putting my opinions out there...
FINAL NOTE: (for the day)... leave these pills alone and stop spending taxpayers money on all this bullshit research. There are people who actually use opiates so they can live a half way normal life but when you but it in perspective.... they are the ones being punished while the "addicts" are just gonna end up moving on to the next "fix" which will be herion.. and once you start with that... there ain't no turning back!!!! I witnessed it first hand with 2 of my friends dying from shooting up herion- That will end up becoming way waay worse then these pills... WATCH!

To be continued... and continued... and continued!!! Sorry i really did get a little overboard with my "first post" but I got opinions that I can go on for days about how stupid and unesseccary these new pills are!

You can still bangm. More water and scrape off the top when you melt it. Btw why use contin when you can use instand release codeine.

Im glad I've overcame by 250 to 350 dollar a day habit. Devils candy

In my area at least the OC were always baffling high to me. I never understand how anyone could pay what would get me 5-6 bags of dope for 1 OC80. I've seen prices that got as high as the low end of the price spectrum for a bundle of dope. That's just insane to me. I think when the OC heads go oh shit can't get no more OCs, they're going to mostly turn to dope because it's cheap and readily available.

I hate these pharm companies. The OP switch is nothing other than a trick to keep their patent and to keep drs rxing their product. There's no reason to believe that any tricks to make pills "abuse-proof" will never do anything but make their products more unhealthy for addicts. Addicts will always use no matter what, so the best thing to do is reduce possible harm, not increase it....

This is so very true, when I first heard that Purdue was going to be discontinuing the original OXycontin formula I knew people everywhere were going to switch to Heroin, cheaper and far far more potent for what you get/price wise. I myself came from doing Oxys to doing Heroin.. I first started using Oxys (Stealing them from my aunt who lives with me basically everyday, for 9 months straight I would have about 10-12 Oc's every night) when this stopped due to my tolerance levels going up I couldnt continue taking only 10 of them a night to do through out the night and share with buddys of mine, I had to have more due to my tolerence going up and having to do more to achieve the desired effect. I soon switched to using heroin and loved it. Since the discontinued production of everyones favorite grey pill all the users I know have switched to H rather than seek treatment. The cons of this now and in the future will surely outweigh the pros of the discontinuation of OC. Everyone and there mother are using heroin out here and it's just getting to be very rediculouse. I guess being a fellow user I can't really say anything though.
