^^^And where did you hear that from? The commerical on tv? Zoloft like many SSRI's are not very effective, not much better than placebo. There are some people that say it works great on them, but its all subjective. The mechinism of action of the vast majority of these anti-depressants are not known, and is not worth the possible long-term neurotoxicity. For very seriously depressed and suicidal people, zoloft will not do shit. With a problem of that severity, these serotonergic drugs wont help, because the problem involves more than just that one neurotransmitter. Tri-cyclics and Tetra-cyclics work a little better, especially ones that work on norepinephrine, but if your without a doubt suicidal, these drugs will not work, and like SSRI's, take arond 2 weeks just to kick in. The only medications that are considered "anti-suicide" drugs are anti-psychotic atypical dopamine antagonists, like zyprexa, which in a high dose could simply make the person not physically able to commit suicide due to the sedation. If you are schizophrenic, zoloft could worsen the condition. And the drugs used commonly for schizophrenics are laden with extra-pyramidal side-effects, and make life simply not worth living. It only helps quell the symptoms, and you remain psychotic. If I suddenly become schizophrenic (my maternal grandmother and uncle are both schizophrenic so i am extra-ordinarilly susceptible) I would end my life, because there is no cure, and its a horrible life. I definately would not end my life over even strong clinical depression (which i think ive had a taste of), because there is a temporary way out (opiates, alot of them), instead of suicide. Schizophrenia on the other hand ruins your life, and simply makes it not worth living. I have a feeling that I wont become schizophrenic, i made it past the danger zone (12-21), and there is one more dangerous point, around middle age, where the danger increases, and if it does, I know the antidote lays in a big metal slug of a 12 gauge shot gun (why would i bother trying to overdose on opiates as often doesnt work, and a shotgun slug to the head is far more sure fire, no pun intended). Dont kill yourself out of depression, because in most cases its transient. But if you become schizo, by all means, go ahead..............
