OxyContin for 6-year-olds

14 is almost too young for oxy... 6 is just child abuse and no better than tobacco companies making their ads look like 5 gum ads so 12-year-olds buy them.

I think it would be child abuse to not give the kid medicine. If the kids Physician or Dentist, in their professional opinion, believe the kid should be treated for pain with an opioid, then I think it is child abuse to withhold medical treatment from the kid, if for no other reason then that the kid can not seek out his own medical care.

People don't start on oxycontin though. By people I mean adults, who have a much greater mass, can handle stronger medications better, and are more aware of the risks of using drugs that have high addiction and dependency rates.

If a young child needed serious pain killers than I think they'd give it to them, once they built up to being able to handle them. Otherwise I don't see what's wrong with using percocet, hydrocodone, and codeine, like they already do. I don't know where you're getting this "with holding medical treatment" idea from. It's not like there's not many other opioid drugs they could use. Give the kids tramadol or demerol even. I don't see the need to market OxyContin to children. As things currently are, going to high school already does a good job of marketing the product.

So, as we already agree upon, kids are given opioids for severe pain as it is. What then is the issue if a private company wishes to make another product for peads? It will still require the kids physician to Rx it, it is not like it is being sold in candy stores.

I was in a severe accident when I was six weirdly enough. I would assume I was given strong painkillers bc I didn't feel horrible pain throughout the whole ordeal in the hospital. The most traumatic part of the whole thing was the severe pain the accident initially precipitated. I know they gave me something in the ambulance bc I felt better. My brain wasn't sophisticated enough to understand whether I was high or not. All I knew was that I felt better. There's a greater level of control over pain meds at that age. No parent should give their kid ad libitum exposure to their pain relievers. I don't really see a problem with this. Oxycodone is a strong pain reliever and if that's what doctors feel is warranted then it should be given to a child in severe pain. It's not really different from using other opiates to treat pain. I know someone who get severe nausea from hydrocodone and codeine but can handle oxycodone. It's a good thing it's available for them.

this overgeneralization is illogical and it would be child abuse to ignore a child's pain imo.

some people need effective pain medication. if you fall off a bike and get huge burns, you're going to do a lot better psychologically the faster that pain is treated. the pain will last less long if it's treated better and faster. if it's not treated, the kid's pain tolerance will become worse not better.
Do you know how many thousands of children will die every year because their dumbass parents give them DXM, Diphenhydramine, and oxycontin all at the same time because they don't realize that they all add up? Also all the prescription errors this would open the world up to. It's not like they're going to mix up penicillin with amoxicillin, they'd be mixing it up with potentially more dangerous things like oxymorphone. Methadone. It's not that hard to fuck up. I don't know what your issue is, we don't need to prescribe them more potent things, we need to use what obviously already has worked for the past... 4.3 billion years.

Also if kids are in that kind of pain, no one should be allowing them to leave from a hospital. They should be there on morphine or something until the pain gets manageable by things like paracetamol.

i think the netwrk speaks the truth. nothing rang true to me on this page other than what was said just above me. my opinion is clearly not the end-all be all, but networks sure as shit is. give a 6 year old weed, but not fuckin heroin. shit

So kids with cancer pain or neuropathic pain or who just had i dunno, spinal fusion for scoliosis should face the choice of a) stay in the hospital, possibly, in the case of cancer pain, until their short life is over, or b) be in blinding pain?

Again, I don't think you are looking at all the possible indications for analgesia nor are you taking a realistic look at the limits of cannabis as an analgesic.

whose side are you on man? this is all hypothetical. from the sounds of it you could easily be working for Perdue or just be poorly informed about modern day medicine. there is no need to market painkillers likey theyre flinstone vitamins. there is no shortage of medication that can be administered to children and i dont understand why you even need to debate this

Why are you creating a false dichotomy? I don't have to be on anyone's side. Never mind the fact there exists more "sides" then Purdue Pharma Vs The World I have a reasonable grasp on modern medicine, considering it is what my academic background is in.

I am not advocating it be marketed like flintstones vitamins. That, is over the counter and direct to consumer. I am advocating that a physician caring for a pediatric patient has in her or his toolbag a variety of highly effective medications for all conditions, including pain. Oxycodone is an excellent pain med, it's potent, easily dosed orally (kids don't really intravenous injections) reasonably safe, and well tolerated.

If you don't understand why I or anyone, needs to debate this, I have a feeling you don't understand the issue well enough to argue on it one way or the other effectively.

if it's not treated, the kid's pain tolerance will become worse not better.

I'm curious about where you got this from. I always thought it was the opposite. I know in endurance training, the more pain you endure, the more you learn to tolerate. Or so it seems to me.

thats great that youre studying drugs, so do i. were just in different classrooms. my point is, if something like this super duper wonder drug oxycontin is so easily and safely administered then why would we need more drugs to be manufactured when theyre already making billions off of us. im not arguing for some "dichotomy" im arguing that big pharma is fucked. if you support it- youre fucked. sorry if my ignorance is showing, ill go back to using my illegal drugs now, thanks.

I'm not even sure what you are asking? Why do drugs need to be manufactured? The obtuse answer is because they get consumed and would run out? Why are new drugs invented? Because no one drug is optimal solution to everything, and it does seem there are a lot of conditions which could benefit from new pharmacotherapeutic agents? Is Oxycodone 100% safe? No. But that generally holds true with the basic tenant of toxicology "The dose makes the poison". It IS easily administered. What do you suppose is easier? Maybe a transdermal patch, maybe.

Yes large pharmaceutical companies have their ethical problems at times, and indeed, they do make billions. They also spend billions on R and D(It usually costs about a billion for the RandD, trials and approval of new drug in the U.S.). They do produce a truly vast variety of products that are essential to modern healthcare, not to mention agriculture vis a vis Veterinary drugs. I fail to see how they are categorically fucked. I don't even see how my supporting the ability of a Dr to Rx a drug to peds is a tactic endorsement of everything these companies do.

What do you suggest to replace them? yay! let's replace the entire list about 15,000 products with cannabis, that should work great as a pressor agent in trauma resuscitation or anti-coagulant to keep the CPB machine from clogging up during on-pump cardiac surgery! Fuck big pharma! I don't want to go the E.R. and actually have them be able do anything useful for me!

i cant tell if you arent reading anything i post or if you just dont care what im saying. either way, youre making yourself look foolish. I was not. Asking. Anything. the topic of the thread is oxycontin for 6 year olds. my opinion is the following: 6 year olds dont need a brand-specific narcotic anymore than they need adderall for ADHD. Will this happen anyway because of the pharmaceutical industry? probably? do i give a fuck? absolutely not. i dont have kids, never want kids, and the last time i was in the hospital i was in fact on an IV. And for god's sake stop blowing my comments about weed out of proportion. it makes it more tiresome to read than it already is. have a super day.

Look Trees, I am a cannabis advocate myself. I think it has some great qualities that can help in certain aspects of a young kids pain/suffering.

It seems as though you have some animosity towards oxycontin in particular. You have stated that you never plan to have kids and don't give a fuck, so maybe you just can't put yourself in the shoes of a mother or father watching their only child wither away in crippling pain. Do you have a clue the MASS of different illnesses/injuries that Oxycontin can help?

I realize the drug companies are inching towards a full blown monopoly. Just because Mcdonalds is a slave labour shit hole doesn't mean I won't stop by time to to to get an icy coke... <-Bad example... But you should hopefully get the idea. People need a range of medication no matter who it comes from. If I could buy my oxycodone or hydromorphone directly from a poppy farmer who does his own synthesis, I guess I would. Not the case!

Did you know that LOTS of young people get the idea planted in their head that they are allergic to natural opiates (codeine/morphine) because young bodies just seem to handle those drugs in different ways... My own sister was sure she was allergic to codeine and morphine for years since she had a morphine pill when she was little and a tylenol 3 prescription. 10 years later she can take pain meds without issue. Just one of those things! She never had a bad reaction to synth opiates like when she had her pallet broken for braces.

I think what purdue is doing is obviously sneaky... they are looking out for themselves not 6 year old kids! Still, the medication they produce is useful to kids that are 6 years old. The terror that some of these kids feel everyday makes them more mature and worthy to receive quality medication than anyone on this site who knows how to type... It is child abuse to think that children's pain is not worthy enough for the drugs that most of us take for a good time.

Trees, you are uber confused... You sound like you are 17 :/

ahh okay, i understand your point, and for the record im not 17. i was just stating an opinion and since no one agrees with it, ill stop posting in this thread. just because i dont approve of or relate to the pharmaceutical agenda doesn't mean im "confused," maybe im in over my head here, i dont know enough about medication, fortunately because ive lived this long without having to use any. does that make any sense?

So what, kids in pain get pills but adult people who have legit chronic pain get told to stuff it? Huh?

I hate this. Its so true. My doctors won't give me pain killers because "I'm too young to have Arthritis". Despite the fact I've have numerous rheumatologists say that theres a 99% chance I have ankylosing spondylitis (takes 8-12 yrs to diagnose).

WTF has to be wrong with a 6 year old to get oxy? Use a god damn tylenol chewable you sick fucks.

Im willing to bet this thread wouldnt have gotten more then 5 posts if the word oxycontin was exchanged for oxycodone in the title.

you could use this argument to ban all medication. also, the issue is, should a doctor be able to say, "in this case/context, oxycodone is warranted." the answer is yes just like it is for dextromethorphan or diphenhydramine, and the responsibility for understanding interactions is generally put on the doctor prescribing those medications...
Also all the prescription errors this would open the world up to. It's not like they're going to mix up penicillin with amoxicillin, they'd be mixing it up with potentially more dangerous things like oxymorphone. Methadone. It's not that hard to fuck up.
kids already get morphine and vicodin. you could use this argument to ban all medication because sometimes people mess up.

like morphine? it's about equally powerful as oxycodone... often, they are interchangeable, but sometimes, one has more therapeutic reason for use, for whatever reason (depends on diagnosis)...
Also if kids are in that kind of pain, no one should be allowing them to leave from a hospital. They should be there on morphine or something until the pain gets manageable by things like paracetamol.
people can be at dangerous levels of pain for more than a couple months... severe pain can be chronic, and in such cases it still must be treated, especially while the child's personality is forming.

Children are confused enough

Recently switched, not by choice, to the new Opana 40mg tab. They made it harder to crush and changed its shape to identify the new change. Unfortunately, it now looks exactly like a yellow smarty! (candy) Imagine-my younger sister thinking its O K to steal a few because she wants some candy too!

Yeah the generic ritalin around here is REALLY sweet. Just like straight splenda! They also look like a small candy... Whole other story, but sickening in its own right.

Also, Trees, you are in over your head. You don't have children, you say you have never needed to take a prescribed medication and therefore dont understand what it is like to be in pain constantly. There are some kids that when they are 5 years old KNOW that they will die within the next two years, wither away watching their parents lose their minds/money/careers while being in constant pain and trying to hold back on the moans and complaints because of the obvious effect it has on the family. It is really fucking sad but lots of kids with bite their lip just to keep things in the house calm. I think a young kid who doesnt understand the importance of a savings account who has been told they will die soon (they dont even really know what that means, it just scares them) I think THOSE kids deserve to take ANYTHING that makes them feel better. If a kid is going to die in 2 years and finds that huge rocket ship hits of crack cocaine make them feel much better, then I say bring on the rock!

People have to stop worrying about who sells these drugs because we need them. Yeah it sucks the way the companies have convinced a large portion of the populace to take whatever they prescribe... But, sometimes the people blindly taking those prescriptions find relief.

I dont think age should be a question in the matter AT ALL! I shouldnt be too young to experience crippling pain and I will certainly never be too old.

I know a girl who had cancer when she was a little girl, she was probably 6-7 when diagnosed and put through chemo/radiation. She is AOK now, successful, beautiful and happy! :) She explained to me when I first met her that she wishes to god that medical marijuana was more prevalent then because her father would have certainly got her a prescription. She was apparently stealing small amount of pot from her father when she was 6-7 years old for relief. She is a massive stoner now a day and there isnt anything wrong with that. If she had been told that she will certainly die within two years she would have been willing at 6-7 years old to take any drug that worked for her and could be prescribed. Who knows, maybe the ability to eat healthy food and get a workout is what really helped to stop the cancer in its tracks.
